first things first--- alex is acutely embarrassed of how lacking his english skills are. it’s his third language (behind finnish and french) and he only started learning it at the age of seventeen in his main verse. he doesn’t have a huge problem understanding english, unless the person has a thick accent or is talking really quickly. after the accident, alex is deaf in his left ear so it makes understanding things more difficult.

alex speaks english almost in a monotone, making him sound bored of everything. with little exception, he will stress the first syllable of each word. he will also pronounce the silent letters in a word and tends to roll his r’s even in words that don’t require that. basically, he pronounces english words with the rules of finnish, because he does not know all the nuances and quirks of the english language, and neither does he care to learn.

he takes things very literally, and doesn’t know many english sayings. the sayings he’s overheard other people use, he will probably use incorrectly. (e.g. “i’m over the moon, or how you say it” or “i had some crocodile tears” when talking about a time he was really crying lol.) there’s no “wh” or “th” sound in the finnish language so alex will say something like, “vat do you mean?” or “dees ees bullshit”

somewhat humorous way of typing alex’s accent (which i won’t do because it’d be a pain in the ass) but something like, “the roud was guud pat the tairs vere bääd" sounds about right, lol. needless to say, alex gets mocked for his accent a lot, especially since he races for a british team and he has two british teammates in a row. it kind of pisses him off so he just avoids speaking english as much as possible. this is also the reason why in press conferences he’s super infamous for just saying “.....yes.” and not much more.

     Jokes aside, Kats is the kinda person who gathers a  lot  of information from the look in other people’s eyes, which is why so many of his nicknames and observations involve eyes.  For example, he calls Mina “Raccoon Eyes” and I have him calling Leia “Cat Eyes” because c’mon, it’s too perfect.  He pushes away Shindo’s hand because he looked into his eyes and saw through his facade.  Then he also made fun of Shishikura for his super squinty eyes…

CANON HC;  katsuki who is gradually losing hearing

Katsuki’s small-scale explosions are about 110 decibels per pop!  One-time exposure to something that loud won’t makeyou lose your hearing.  Prolonged exposure over time is where Katsuki goeswrong.

As of right now, his hearing loss isn’t too bad, but it’s gettingup there.

Part of the reason he’s so damn loud is because he honestly can’thear himself.  You won’t ever catch him mumbling to himself, partlybecause he doesn’t want to be like Deku but also because he wouldn’t be able to hear himselfvery well.

Sometimes, when he disregards what people say and changes thetopic rudely, it’s because he didn’t hear them and he’s not gonna bother askingthem to repeat what they said.

AU HC;  katsuki who has already lost a good bit ofhearing

As a kid, he accidentally set off a series of explosions too closeto his ears  –  knocked several decibels from his hearing in one go.

He knows Japanese sign language, but he doesn’t like using it.

Naturally, he knows all thegestures for swear words.

Will often put earphones  --  airpods?!  -- in and blast music at a volume that hecan hear it, but this is obnoxious for people near him.
