It might have been a scene out of a horror movie if they weren’t both accustomed to dealing with the dead. Snow had fallen over the city, a rare blizzard that had shut things down so quickly most were stuck where they’d been before the storm started. Lights had flickered, the weight of the snow straining the electrical infrastructure to the point of breaking, and then plunged them into darkness. His mortuary was the last place he wanted to spend an evening with Hyeon, but at least there was a fireplace in the small, often unused apartment, on the second floor.

His palm was wrapped around the flame of a candle, shielding it from any stray breeze that might seek to extinguish it before he managed to get it to the table. Wood burned softly in the fireplace, occasionally sparking and crackling as heat began to spread throughout the room.

“So, I don’t know if this place is haunted, and I don’t want to know,” he said, half teasing. Siwon took a seat next to the other man and let out a long, tired breath. “So if you see someone’s dearly departed grandma wandering around, don’t tell me, okay?” Truth was, he didn’t live in the apartment, preferring to keep his work life and home life separate (and not wanting any mad relatives to find him in the dead of the night while he was asleep), so he had no idea if any angry spirits called the place home. “But it looks like we’re going to be stuck here at least overnight. Maybe longer…depending on how long it takes the snow plows to get to us.”

There was a gas stove in the kitchen, ample food in his office below – snacks, mostly, but there was instant ramen. He often brought lunch from home and got too busy to eat – which had led to a considerable stash.

Lucky them.

“Look, I know things are crazy right now.” Understatement of epic proportions. Since Renata came into his life, Siwon had learned more than he ever wanted to know about heaven, hell, and the angels or demons that called both places home. He learned about a war he didn’t want to be part of, that the girl he liked was part of that war, and that her crazy ass brother was somehow key to the whole thing coming down on their heads. It was…an awkward way to start a new friendship, to say the least.  

“But, I wanted you to know that if you ever need to talk, you know, about any of this…” Hands gestured around vaguely, his meaning clear. “I’m here, and I’ll listen.” Regardless of crazy relatives or apocalyptic wars, he liked her – probably more than he should, or at least more than he’d originally wanted. It made things like dying at the hands of a pissed off Nephilim brother a little easier to swallow. “And if you want me to get you out of here, even for a little bit, just ask, okay? We can do whatever you want. Get dinner. Walk. Talk.”

Chun Hyeon. A spirit medium. Paranormal investigator. Normally, Siwon would have scoffed at those titles, gone about his business without giving much thought to the truth behind the claims of abilities to see beyond the veil of life and death. Ordinarily, however, his clients weren’t mauled to death in the middle of his mortuary by a re-animated loved one that seemed to know exactly what she was doing. The look she’d given them both, that knowing smile before she bit down into her husband’s throat, had been one of complete cognizance -- and then she’d waltzed out and into the world as if she’d merely going to the corner Starbucks. What happened to her after that, Siwon had no idea; he’d been too busy trying to cover up the scene of a murder in his funeral home.

Suffice it to say, when the opportunity to search for her had presented itself, she was nowhere to be found. There were also no reports of ravaging ghouls, cannibalistic soccer moms, or dead bodies turning up nearby…

To say it was concerning was an understatement.

“Chun Hyeon?” He framed the question with just enough curiosity, even though he knew full well that was exactly who he was standing before. “My name is Lee Siwon. I run the funeral home just outside the city…” How exactly did one go about telling a medium that they were a necromancer who shoved the souls of the dead back into bodies for a profit? It didn’t seem like casual conversation. “I need your help, or, well, perhaps just an opinion. Either way, do you have a moment to talk?” If anyone knew what might be happening on the other side of the veil it was Hyeon, because Siwon’s abilities stopped short of piercing that layer of separation between the worlds.

He was going to get murdered by angels, or half-angels, or something. Siwon was expecting that at any second the floor would open up and he’d be swept off to some alternate dimension where he’d be tortured for the rest of eternity. That was the image playing on loop in his head, even as he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him. In the background, he could hear the others clinking glasses and talking about how much better the coming year would be. Still, Siwon couldn’t help but feel like the one on its way out the door had been pretty damn special.

So what if he got dragged off to hell, tortured for all eternity? It might be worth it just to feel her lips against his, to usher out the year with the taste of her lipgloss and the knowledge that she was as crazy about him as he was about her. Without hesitation, he leaned into closer, lips pressing chastely against hers as the countdown came to its conclusion, only daring to take it deeper when she didn’t pull away screaming.

“You’re a wet blanket.” Siwon leaned back in the chair, eyes falling on Tida and holding his gaze. The expression wasn’t said with any malice; on the contrary, he had a smile hidden behind the glass that was raised to his lips. “As in, you’re no fun. Listen, I understand the…hesitance, but hear me out.” In a lot of ways, he was offering the other man a job, but it wasn’t a regular 9 to 5, pushing papers in the funeral home’s office. “People come through here and they want answers; they want closure.” Of course, yes, sometimes they wanted the combination to Auntie Eunjae’s safe, but that was a different story altogether.

“I’m just saying that people pay good money for any bit of information about loved ones that have passed on.” Siwon shrugged nonchalantly, as if that were something that should be common knowledge. “I’m just here to help.” So he dabbled in the magic of the dead – necromancy, they called it. He called it a gift, one that afforded him the opportunity to live a good life. So what if a few of them went sideways once in a while. It was all there in the fine print that most didn’t bother to read anyway.

“Righteous paths?” Siwon all but giggled out the words, legs crossing and uncrossing in an attempt to make himself more at ease – more comfortable in the wake of what was just said. Talk of being righteous and doing good always made the necromancer uncomfortable, made him realize that those words would never – could never – be associated with what he was capable of doing. There was nothing righteous in bringing back the dead, in watching the light leave a loved one’s eyes when they saw what happened to dear old grandma after she passed on. No, the very last thing that could ever be said about him was that he was doing something noble.

“You’re right. There are no righteous paths, but there are plenty of righteous people who think what they are doing is ordained by god.” He scoffed under his breath, a mocking sound that wasn’t directed at Taemin, but rather at the idea of someone being so blind as to think they were on any sort of divine mission.
