THAT  EARNS  HIM  A  LAUGH    ——one  so  loud  it  almost  startles  max.   and  she  doesn’t  mean  to  laugh  at  him,  not  really,  it’s  just  such a  ridiculous  thing  to  come  out  of  his  mouth.  she’d  be  willing  to  bet  that  the  amount  of  truth  she  actually  knows  about  nikolas  petran  could  barely  fit  into  a  thimble,  but  here  he  is  questioning  the  things  she’s  been  withholding  from  him. 

                  ❝  is  that  where  we’re  at  now  ?  ❞    a  hum  of  contemplation,   and  she’s  giving  him  a  coy  look  —  like  maybe  this  is  just  a  tease  between  the  two  of  them,  one  of  those  things  that’ll  either  turn  into  more  laughter  or  something  else  that  would  take  her  breath  away.   

max  shakes  her  head  like  she  can  clear  it  of  thoughts  like  that.   ❝  are  we  becoming  people  who  tell  each  other  things  ?  ❞    and  maybe  there’s  something  bitter  about  the  edge  to  her  tone  —  maybe  despite  every  warning  she’d  ever  received  about  getting  tangled  up  with  this  man,  she’d  fallen  into  it  too easily.  it  doesn’t  mean  she’d  ever  expect  him  to  be  the  confiding  type   —   and  so,  why  should  she?   

                    ❝  i  bet  there’s  loads  of  stuff  you  haven’t  told  me.  ❞    one  brow  arches  up  as  if  to  challenge  him  to  disagree.  he  won’t,  she  knows   —   not  just  because  of  his  reputation,   but  because  everyone  has  some  secrets,  or  even  little  insignificant  details  they  don’t  share.  still,  there’s  a  bit  of  mischief  at  play,  here,  and  max  is  feeling  like  riding  the  wave  of  it.    ❝  i’ll  trade  you  —   ❞    and  maybe  the  idea  is  stupid,  childish,  the  kind  of  thing  in  which  teenagers  at  parties  indulge  as  an  excuse  to  drink  too  much  and  make  too  many  mistakes.  but  then,  if  she’s  already  made  the  mistakes,  what’s  wrong  with  playing  the  games  after  the  fact?   ❝  —   secret  for  a  secret  ?  ❞

                                   silence. it was necessary to get his mind in order. was a hell of a thing to end up guns pointed at each other and head to head with someone who had once upon a time been like family.  “ you know.... ” silence broke and frank has caught his breath as he turned his attention towards billy an exhale quickly following through.  “ this is only ending one a two ways, man. you and me. one of us ain’t walking away. ” that was just the facts. the way things had turned wasn’t it? there was no fix for this. no sorry man, call it good. there was no bandaids for this friendship. no apology good enough.

          her hand gripped the gun tightly, some attempt to stave off the shaking that had set in the moment she’d stepped into the building. her back pressed against the wall as she side stepped along, stopping when she got to the open doorway, heart hammering in her chest so loud she could almost hear it in her throat.    “ here to take you in, billy. you can either come quietly, or.... not. “    stepping around the door frame, her gun held out in front, eyes scanning each corner of the room, throat almost closing from the adrenaline, the almost small tinge of fear that was creeping up her neck. she should have brought back up. fuck, she should have brought castle.   “ this doesn’t have to get ugly, billy. but i can play just as dirty as you can. “

– leah nodded her agreement. there were a few more hours before sunrise and they needed to get out right now or risk a painful death. she cursed inwardly. it had been a set up. they had been looking for clues of the vampire nest passing as a werewolf pack and made a terrible mistake they didn’t realize until they were surrounded by growling, fast creatures with pointy fangs.
