âAs long as itâs not ours,â he spoke drolly, almost as if he wasnât the least bit concerned that she might be right. Weapon casually resting against his shoulder, he paused his steps long enough to get a read on the building in front of them. Three stories. Dark. Boarded up. Undeniable stench of death. Check. All the things that made walking into it like something seen in a horror movie. âThey processed fish here. Thatâs probably what you smell.â
It wasnât. But maybe he was trying to make her feel a tiny bit better â one of his exceedingly rare displays of kindness. Then, whatever kindness heâd been trying for disappeared with a harsh laugh. âOr maybe itâs just the idiots who werenât as smart as us. Letâs go.â A step forward, followed by another slight pause. âDonât die. It stinks enough already in there.â
