In The King of Attolia, he hides and minimizes the fact that he's missing a hand. His attendants and the court assume it's because he's ashamed and uncomfortable with it, and that's true to some extent, but he's also hiding it because it's a weapon. A razor sharp blade that his enemies repeatedly forget about, dismiss, and underestimate.
His relationship with the prosthetic mirrors his relationship with his power. Gen is minimizing the lethality both of himself and his hook throughout the entire book to cause the court to underestimate him, so he can more easily do what needs to be done. However, he is also uncomfortable with the responsibilities and scrutiny that come with being king, just like he is uncomfortable with the vulnerability and the kind of attention his disability brings. He accepted that if he wanted to be with Attolia and save Eddis, it meant being king, just like he accepted that those things wouldn't have happened if he hadn't lost his hand.
