before, i always thought of that moment as a stick-it-to-the-man confrontation, where orpheus finally stands up to hades, the big bad boss whoās been silencing the workers of hadestown all this time, but now!! now it becomes an entreaty to persephone, their patroness who promised to provide for them and yet returns to hades every year and still canāt bring herself to truly, significantly interfere with how hadestown is run. despite her work as the lady of the underground, she is still one of Them, one of the Few with the power to say what is true.
but when confronted by orpheus, who asks her if itās true what they say, persephone finally musters the strength to stop trying to forget and run away and ask hades, āhow long?ā
