I get why people want to see jealous Michael, but that will just make him look like a hypocrite after Alex wasn't allowed to show any negative emotions towards m*luca last season and even played matchmaker for them. But Malex not talking to each other at all for a year when they live in the same small town and are supposed to be friends now wouldn't make sense either. I think the best would be Michael leaving Roswell after the finale for some reason, maybe Jones escaped and Michael went after him, or Liz invited him to LA and he decided to stay there for a while.
Yeah, I would have enjoyed Jealous MichaelTM if we had gotten a different season 2, and actually, a different season 1 finale as well. With a tweak to the set up, and having the in relationships at the same time, we could have seen them both being a little jealous and petty about the other moving on, and also seen them, when it really came down to it, picking each other over their respective new partners culminating in Alex’s kidnapping where Michael goes a little feral and actually gets to talk to his friends and family and gf about Alex missing and telling them all off when they try to keep him from going after Alex (LITERALLY the perfect time for a “What if it was Liz?” parallel and I will die mad about it), and my salty, petty heart would have looooved a moment where m*ria tells him something like “if he loves her he won’t go until they have a plan”, and he just shrugs and says “It’s Alex” and leaves anyways. But with the set up we got, there is no way to do jealous Michael now without it making his character look like an absolute asshole and giving Alex no reason to want to go back to him over Forrest.
As for what we are going to get now since we had a narratively incomprehensible season 2, I’m not sure. Roswell is a “small town” but not that small and it’s entirely possible to totally avoid someone, especially during a pandemic. I know we are all excited for Malex to be friends and work towards more, but honestly I wouldn’t say they ended season 2 as friends. Michael helped tear up the shed, but we’re told he was only there because m*ria sent him (will I ever not be pissed about every attempt at the writing to undercut how important Malex are to each other? Sources say no), and yeah they read over the journal together, but when Alex puts his feelings out there with the song, Michael walks out partway through, Alex kisses someone else, and they don’t speak again after that. So I’m actually going to be a little disappointed if they start the season with Malex being friends now suddenly because I don’t feel like the writing for season 2 earned that for them so we’ll have to miss all that development. I don’t really want to see antagonistic Malex though, because I don’t think that’s where season 2 left them either. I don’t really know because season 2 was so all over the place with how Malex interacted, and how they were only allowed to interact in a bubble away from the rest of the group and the weird juxtaposition of the song being a big Malex moment that was immediately undercut by Michael walking away and Alex kissing Forrest, it’s just impossible to say where they will start the season, especially with such a big time jump.
I actually would love for Michael to have left Roswell for some reason though traveling (especially to LA) is expensive and more expensive and less probable during a pandemic, though we don’t know how much they will touch on that, or if they will try to pretend the US did the smart thing and actually paid people to stay home and we got out of this hole much sooner. If that’s the case, I really would like for Michael to have left, or even if Alex left and was working for the Air Force in some capacity. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
