βTommy?β Evan said, surprised.
He wished he could be rational and say that Evan was surprised that Tommy was here when he hadnβt called him. Instead, his head just heard Evan surprised that Tommy would be here for him at all.
The server stood up and patted Evanβs back. βTake care, Buck.β She walked away, leaving the two of them alone.
There were so many things that Tommy wanted to say. Apologies he needed to give, promises he needed to make, he was burning with the need to ask Evan if he really thought that Tommy wouldnβt come if he was in trouble.
He didnβt do any of that.
Instead, he walked over slowly to make sure he wasnβt coming at Evan aggressively. Heβd had enough of that tonight. The fact that he had been on date according to Pacer barely even registered in his mind but it did now. A romantic partner had hurt Evan. Tommy wanted to make sure he didnβt trigger anything moving towards him now.
He knelt down. βHey, Evan.β
βWhy are you here?β Evan asked. It was a real question to him. He sounded genuinely confused.
He had no idea that he was twisting the knife in Tommyβs heart.
βI came to pick you up,β Tommy said, trying not to let on that he was hurt because he had no right to be. βLetβs get out of here, okay?β
Evan ducked his head to look at his phone and in the process he sniffled a little. That only made this worse. If Evan criedβ¦
βMy ride is going to be here in, uh, in ten?β Evan said, tilting his phone out to show Tommy.
βCancel it, Iβm your ride,β Tommy said. He tried not to say it like an order but he wanted it to be one. Evan needed someone right now, someone who cared about him.
Watery blue eyes looked at him. Evan didnβt say anything, he just stared.
βPlease?β Tommy asked.
There was some quiet hesitation in Evan. Tommy couldnβt tell what was behind it. Either he wanted to take the offer but was afraid to or maybe he just truly couldnβt understand why Tommy would be here for him β didnβt matter really. His hesitation just highlighted how much Tommy had failed him as a boyfriend. As a friend.
βI want to help, sweetheart. Let me?β Tommy spoke in a near-whisper. The request felt too vulnerable to be spoken at regular volume. He needed to keep hushed just in case anyone else heard and could see his heart.
