what a lovely question !!! i saw this just before my flight took off and i’ve been thinking about it the whole time. but here we are with my perspective:

james is definitely involved in the whole drama, but it’s not like he wanted to be an active part of it in the first place.

it’s not his fault if he trained on the first line with gabe and ryan as soon as he got on the team in september. it’s definitely not his fault if he played most of the season on the first line with them, replacing will. he was expected to take will’s spot, everyone knew that was going to happen during the season.

ryan definitely fueled the whole narrative by talking about how easy it was to play with james, how they easily built chemistry on and off the ice. i remember him saying in an interview that james is more outgoing off the ice than will. something that might seem harmless, but instead seemed like he wanted to let slip how much fun he can have without will. how he was moving on from him. it was pretty obvious that everyone was trying to prove that they were fine and that they didn’t need will anymore.

james himself didn’t really fuel this replacement-drama in interviews, that’s why i think he didn’t want to get involved in the beginning. it would have meant increasing the pressure he already had on himself. but he was happily replacing will and it showed in his relationship with gabe. it was crystal clear how much they’ve bonded with each other, james seemed so happy every time he was around gabe.

how can we forget about the moment during the game against providence where gabe pulled james and teddy closer on the bench, while ryan sat there looking pointedly away. he almost seemed excluded from what gabe had built with the rookies. now things have changed, gabe is the one who has moved on from will while ryan is just sitting there with his ghosts. anyway i think it’s lovely to see gabe ““adopt”” both james and teddy.
