hi! I use them for quite different things, such as in my own charms/jars and selling them bare for otherβs practices. so the representation can depend.
as I donβt feel comfortable doing spiritwork myself, I avoid inviting anything to live inside of them/using them as a vessel, but itβs not unusual for other people to use them this way (βadoptingβ child spirits is really popular where I live)
when I use them for my own practice I use them as a physical representation of something important, depending on my intention. for example, for a love jar I surround it by corresponding ingredients of βloveβ, and it will either represent the owner of the charm, the person they are trying to attract, or the person they want to bless. ingredients and ceremony will be tweaked accordingly. Iβve also changed out the core of a clay head to a mix of basil and rosemary for some, in a protective charm.
