And honestly

                       I remember you in high school. I remember                         what you used to call me, and the looks you                         shot me in the hallways.

                        I remember the look on your faces when I started                         dating Bill; the rumors that followed us; being                         beards for one another. You knew before I did that                         he was gay, but I ignored you, because for once in                         my life, someone wanted me.

                        I remember the things people said, in hushed voices,                         when I graduated from the academy and became a                         deputy in the Sheriff's department; 'living up to her                          potential. lesbo.' And the shock on everyone's face, the                         amused disbelief, when I announced my pregnancy.

                        It was my own bad fucking luck that my daughter grew up                         to become one of you people. Condescending, shallow,                         popular. She had everything that I never did. She resented                         me for not knowing, for being an outcast. Even as an adult,                         I was a disappointment - as Sheriff, leader of the Council.

                        But you know what? I never got bitter. Some of you died.                         Some of you left. Not one of you ever gave a shit about                         me, but you know what I did? I looked after your kids. I                         treated them like my own. I was a god damn mother when                          you couldn't or wouldn't be.

                        And you know who's gonna look after them now? Each other.                         Because they don't need you. And they don't need me.
