There was a demonstration, a festival really, within Celadon City. In it was a rare display of the Saffronâs Fighting Dojo, both showing off their prowess as well as honoring several past time traditions. It was around this time of year that Natsume had chosen to come home and participated.
The battering of drums and the cries of several of her students and comrades filled the air as she observed them from the sidelines. Her part was over for now, but she enjoyed watching each and everyone of them (if only to ensure hey were all going to do the best they can). It was around this time when sheâd felt a pair of eyes follow her, not like any of the others, and turned to face it.Â
Needless to say, she was a bit surprised to find that it was Celadonâs very Leader. Sheâd heard rumors about the woman, seen a few papers, and the men at her familyâs dojo were rather enthusiastic when it came to the League, so it was hard not to recognize her, but it didnât mean she knew her beyond that.Â
Honestly, it sounded a bit too perfect to be true.  Â
But, she did try to attempt to be nice this time around, if only because of that (and ensuring that they would be back the next year around). â ... is there something you need? â

one year,
Her name still riles you up. Maybe itâs because sheâs always (always, always) doing something to make you mad when sheâs around that you forget, at that moment, she isnât there any more. And your reaction is enough to bring them to laugh (in a bittersweet way, youâd reflect later), if only because they understood why it does what it does to you.
So, youâd remark, in that same angry tone, âI donât pity wherever she went.â And youâd explain, sheâs probably up to her usual tricksâstealing and sticking her nose where it didnât belong.Â
The only difference, youâd say with the barest hint of satisfaction, is that she couldnât come back. Â
five years,
Time has passed since then, and her name no longer vexes you at it once did. But, Itâs grown plenty times more quiet these past few years and youâre unable to tell just why.
Tilting your cup of tea, you frowned. The waitress was quick and attentive, just as she were towards any other. There was no underlying mischief, no sense of rivalry (whether friendly or not). Sheâd even passed by, momentarily breaking your thoughts to ask if youâd like more.
No, youâd answer, and you knew exactly why itâs been quiet all along.
   âItâs not the same.âÂ
She gave you a puzzled but ever polite smile, and you just wanted to rip it off.Â
ten years,Â
More time has passed since the little slip long time ago, and youâve become close to the other leaders in a more comfortable mannerâeven the dexholder youâd threatened long ago. It wasnât as though you hadnât changed as well, becoming more open to the idea of meeting the others after work, chatting about things you honestly didnât care about, but at least he held some interesting conversations every now and then.
And, as luck would have it, it seemed that todayâs topic revolved around her, but you understood why. Itâs around that time of year when a certain someone visited and the heavy air hung around, so heâd invited you (someone who understood just how vexing she could be) to lunch. Â
It was awkward, as it always was when bringing up the past, but eventually youâd both muddled through. Youâd even let out a small smirk at some of his stories, refraining from saying just how much youâd both expected that to happen.
â ... She was a meddler, through and through,â youâd said eventually, and, much to his confusion, youâd narrow your gaze, âeven more than you.â  Â

one year,
Itâs been a while since sheâd glanced at her phone and tried to actually call someone, if only due to the strange sort of difficulty of trying to think of just what that abra of hers would have renamed them. Plenty of them were ridiculous (even if some of them did make sense), but sheâd paused as one name had caught her eye. She let out a slow hum, if but slightly questioning, at how this had remained unchanged.
"And here I thought Blue would be the one nostalgic," she remarked before moving on to the next one.Â
five years,
Even though five years have long come and go since then, Sabrina hadnât changed. She was still a rain of sunshine when they invited her to those regional meets, and sheâd chosen to spend most of her time leaning back in her seat, watching as theyâd discussed trivial matters. Her occasional input was often targeted at someone, digging in a little too personally, before sheâd let them go.
It wasnât all too long after that sheâd stood abruptly and just left as they were in the middle of a speech to stretch her legs and walk around the city. Imagine her surprise when she found Daisy in an aftermath of a shopping spree, carelessly tossing an arm around her and half-dragging her to Greenâs home.
And thatâs how she found herself with a warm cup of tea in her hands as the brunette floated about the kitchen, stocking it as if he were still here. It was perplexing, honestly. With all the offences sheâd had with her family, sheâd so easily welcomed her hereâand that was not even considering just how. or why, theyâd even managed this home.
Without even taking a sip, sheâd placed the cup back onto the coffee table, watching Daisy oh so very closely. "Why are you doing this?"
The woman stopped, if only to tap her chin and let out a small hum. " ⊠Because you looked like you could use a little distraction."
  "Oh."Â
"I really miss him, you know." She started, the words uttered in such a way even she could barely catch them. "It might not make much sense but--"
  "--I do too."Â
The woman turned and smiled in that all too knowing manner, and she would learn later that day, there's a reason why he acted as he did.  Â
ten years,
Ten years had passed since he was gone (and not gone as sheâd just come to know but the kind of gone where they needed and found another replacement for the Viridian Gym). It seemed as like it was never going to be a place sheâd ever find herself at ease, filled with the memories of not one but two people sheâ
Sabrina clicked her tongue before kneeling down to place a flower next to the gravestone. "It wasnât my idea.â Sheâd said as she straightened once more, arms wrapped around herself as she stared elsewhere.
Then again, it wouldnât have been her idea to ever be there in the first place.
It wasnât as if sheâd even gone to the processions years ago, far too awkward about the very idea of intruding on all those dex holders and general goody-two-shoes. Never mind how sheâd judged just how it wouldnât have been right, not with how she did try to kill him the first time theyâve met.
âShe said I should visit sometime, and that youâd like it.â She scoffed. "But youâre dead, so what does she know?â

one year,
These regional meetings are far more quiet now, she noticed. Thereâs a heavy air that surround the table, more so emanating from the very spot that girl once sat, and she chooses to watch as the new leader (one so accurately aware that they would be compared to her) struggle with her duties. Erika tries, she notices, to help, but even she needs a break from the heavy atmosphere.
Itâs only after the new cerulean leader and her were around that she finally spoke, "it could be worse." And it seemed like enough for the kid (young and naive as to just what Kasumi had been up to all that time before) to cheer up significantly, walking out of the room with a lighter step.
And sheâd caught the strange look another leader gave her, waving it away without another thought. It wasnât like she cared. It wasnât like she was talking to the kid either.  Â
five years,
It didnât take all too long before they moved on and the new leader fit into their group dynamics. They got caught on Janineâs pranks, earned a few laughs. What they didnât catch was the look Sabrina gave them and the smile sheâd received in return. The psychic laughed quietly, earning strange looks from the entire group.Â
Janine would be the first to comment. Her naivety shielded her from Sabrinaâs wrath, but sheâd earned no real answers, even when the girl began to get frustrated.  Â
  "Even you werenât this easy."Â
ten years,
It would be ten years before Ceruleanâs leader would confront Sabrina: not for any business reasons (whether as gym leaders, or as a subordinate to a commander) but they wanted to know. Itâs been years, and theyâve been a leader almost as long as Kasumi has. But it doesnât take a genius to see, even now sheâs comparing the two. Her criticisms ever more harsh when it came to things that she would have done so easily.
âWhat was she like,â theyâd asked, âI meanâI asked the others already butââ They stumbled over their words, letting it drop, causing the psychic to roll her eyes and glance elsewhere.
"She was gullible." Sabrina finally said. "Much like you."Â
And they stuttered, stumbled ever more until Sabrina turned back towards them.

one year,
Even after a year, there are days where she woke up, smelling the burnt bread and eggs. She would close her eyes then, pretend itâs her before she could hear their dear motherâs voice call.
Sheâd groan then, opening her eyes to stare at the ceiling, and, in spite of herself, remark, "at least you had experience against you. That womanâs spent years learning how to cook, and she still canât."Â
five years,
Five years had passed, and she is long done with high school, already working on her degree. Sheâs still bitter and apathetic towards most. The few that stay (if due to classes or sheer determination) know there are certain topics that they shouldnât bring up.
Just like how she preferred to be alone their birthday and took the time to buy a candle (not for a cake or something superfluous) but for her twin. A piece of candy was placed beside it.
   â ⊠I really hate sweets.âÂ
ten years,
Sheâs an adult now: old enough to regret not spending her time wisely, but young enough to know thereâs so much out there to learn, so much to be done. Her co-workers remind her of this, stacking plenty of work on her desk, trying to hinder her anyway they can (because after her second promotion, they know sheâs got the determination and cunning make it to the top).Â
Itâs a hard and lonely (she supposed) process but it was manageable.
Sheâd still be at the office, long after everyone was gone, burning the midnight oil. There were projects to be completed, meetings to prepare for, but sheâd always managed to find a small moment to herself. It was only during those rare moments of fragility that sheâd open her wallet and stare at one of the very few pictures they had.
