I think it's sort of telling that the fact that our system has cultivated a culture where we're allowed to and even encouraged to ask for more--more time, more freedom to pursue hobbies, more privacy, more control over what information we want displayed--and the fact that it genuinely feels like a surprise, almost, when we give ourselves that freedom, is either a reflection on how we were expected to be handled in the past or how our brain is wired to expect strictness and limitation as a default. We're slowly learning how to let ourselves just...be, and how to give ourselves lives outside of what is expected.
