Emery started off with a general team when they travel with Touya's child (girl?) around Unova, but their team becomes more health-based when he travels around Kalos: healing normal, grass, and psychic types.
I also think that Emery becomes the Aspertia gym leader at some point, though I don't know if it's only temporary or not, as his goal is to become a pokemon doctor.
When Hikari becomes pregnant with Emery, Cheren catches an Audino to help look after his child. When Emery goes on their journey, the Audino essentially becomes their first pokemon.
