I catch myself wanting so badly to like David Cain, especially when Cass' flashbacks show her being happy, but it's like. Man. He's such a shitty dude. He turned his daughter into a weapon. He kept childhood from her. He kept language from her. No amount of happy moments like this make what he did any less horrible. Cass is forever burdened by guilt and self-hatred and the idea that she only exists for what she can do, good or bad. A smile when she was a kid doesn't change that.

Scenes like this aren't meant to make David seem likable or even seem more interesting. The goal of scenes like this in Puckett's run was to make Cass more interesting in her relationships. Cass is made a more interesting character because she has such a fraught and not easily categorize-able relationship to her father (same with her relationship to Bruce and how similar he is acting to David toward Cass. Mistaking her comfort and happiness with healthiness. Another common theme in her solo even taken up by future writers). You don't have to like David Cain, you are just meant to view things things through the tumultuous emotions that Cass feels as the main character.
