Hi Taddpole! I love your work!! I recently re read CBMTHY and was wondering if you had any plans for the series in the works? Seriously makes my eyeballs cry so much I feel so seen as someone who suffers from depression and suicidal ideation
Hiya!! Call me tabby! π§‘
CBMTHY is a complicated mess-pile to be honest with you. In the beginning(???) I was kind of writing it I think as an out for some heavy emotions I was feeling at the time, and consequently itβs very vibes-based. I have *an* idea of a plot but if Iβm honest itβs not the driver of the fic and nor do I want people to come to cbmthy expecting a well-thought-out narrative when itβs much more a vehicle for angst/emotion!
Iβm glad you feel seen π« there have certainly been plenty of times when I felt pretty wobbly/insecure about cbmthyβs writing, but getting to hear how people could see past the iffy story decisions and were able to recognise a lot of the emotions I was putting out there was very precious to me. Maybe I just need to chill tf out when it comes to that story and just take it one step at a time instead of attempting to sit down and write one massive chapter π Iβve attempted to edit and rewrite ch. 26 quite a few times and I keep working myself into a corner which just sucks lmao, but I also know I have a strong preference for writing for the female characters now so Az is much less appealing π
personal curiosity, has there been any other media/fandoms that you ever felt like writing fics for?? personally i'm always jumping from interest to interest whether that be books, movies, or shows and my ao3 bookmarks are the most random collection of different fandoms, so i was just wondering if there's been any in the past or current that you've been immersed enough to feel like writing for π«£π«£
Omg no. Iβd say Iβm barely in the acotar fandom and itβs so tiring. I enjoy writing but itβs also so tedious, and again, tiring. Exhausting. Sometimes writing just feels like being sick where you have the stuff inside you and itβs so desperate to get out it just forces itself into a pages document. Heaving, convulsions, sweating and all
In terms of writing for other media lmao no. Again, so tiring, but also I like the connection part of fandom and that only really happens if you stick around long enough to put down roots(?) so jumping around 100% is not for me π
My environment is also not great for writing in which is a big problem Iβm struggling with
Itβs such a precious series to me, and Iβm slowly building/connecting bits and pieces of it together, and Iβm actually excited to eventually get around to particular scenes, and particular revelations, and hopefully getting to hear what someone/some people think about the story as it comes together more and more βΉοΈπ§‘
thqc series really is my roman empire..... especially since you kinda laid out the major timeline? outline of plot points here and there, it builds even more anticipation for every piece you write for this series πββοΈ like i have a vague blurry image of what the big picture will be, but every time u post a new installment for the series, one specific section of the picture gets really detailed and clear,,,, idk i feel like everytime i think i have a grasp on the reader character in thqc she's always subverting my expectations especially with feyre interactions π€§π€§ (altho that might be because feyre is my favourite blorb of acotar so i have a teensy little biased tendency to want to fold immediately when it comes to her and would not have the courage and patience of thqc!reader to do all that poking and prodding on feyre's temper ANYWAYS)
this is moreso my wishful thinking, but would we at any point get to see feyre be more openly jealous/protective/affectionate about reader through out the story π«£π«£ like we've seen moments of her inner turmoil of wanting reader but also feeling annoyed/resentful sprinkled in different scenes, and in the latest piece i interpreted feyre's fixation on reader wearing clothes as someeeee jealousy and protectiveness (or being possessive??? who knows π«’) about the sentries being able to see her naked body; but would there be anymore obvious displays of that in the future π i'm assuming probably not soon while feyre's still in her depressed funk post-UTM but maybe later on when she's stolen away to the night court, rhys manages to annoy her enough that she starts being more bold about her feelings??? just throwing out headcanons at this point lol
anyways ty for gifting us another piece of the thqc world ππ
Iβm sorry but the thqc group is my favourite. Itβs a bit wild to me that out of everything Iβve written itβs probably the story thatβs done the βworstβ in terms of likes but you guys actually come talk to me about what you like/are curious about in terms of the story + where itβs going βΉοΈ itβs such a rewarding series? And itβs also just so relieving and wonderful getting to write sapphic fics. Like this is where iβm supposed to be and itβs vaguely euphoric that I get to write something I love then engage with other people who also enjoy what I enjoy. Like isnβt that so wild? I feel so lucky βΉοΈπ«Ά
ANYWAY yes!! Iβm actually so glad this series is kind of lowkey? It makes so much more sense only writing the beats of the story instead of trying to invent stuff and cram a ton of action and connection into a chronological timeline. Itβs so much nicer having the freedom to jump about?
βlike i have a vague blurry image of what the big picture will be, but every time u post a new installment for the series, one specific section of the picture gets really detailed and clear,,,,β
Iβm lowkey emotional ty this is such a lovely way to put it and I understand exactly what you mean and I am so happy itβs happening that way for u ππ«Ά
βand would not have the courage and patience of thqc!reader to do all that poking and prodding on feyre's temperβ
Ty ty!!! I like to write thqc!reader a bit like an alien. She existed before UTM but fifty years of that lifestyle combined with her past gives her an unusual outlook on life π she spent the majority of her life/first part of her life in one place, in a mostly unchanging environment without much exposure to the world beyond, and then she gets scooped up by Amarantha and again, lives that part of her life in a mostly unchanging environment. Though she gets to see a lot of the same things she already has just from a higher vantage point.
βwould we at any point get to see feyre be more openly jealous/protective/affectionate about reader through out the story π«£π«£β
Oooh not so much jealous but I have some scenes I want to write set in the night court where Feyre seeks out reader as a safe haven and reader is. v. satisfied and v. smug about it π
Thoughhh I have ~some~ ideas for some other things I want to write about while theyβre still in Spring ππ€
βand in the latest piece i interpreted feyre's fixation on reader wearing clothes as someeeee jealousy and protectiveness (or being possessive??? who knows π«’) about the sentries being able to see her naked bodyβ
I donβt want to go into it too much because I think thatβs the appeal of reading about itβgetting to slowly figure it out as youβre given more and more context until finally a shape appears. But also yes, Feyre is still very much in her depressive recovery and still has sooooo many feelings to untangle. Sheβs not able to make sense of much, especially in regards to how she feels about readerβso Iβll want to try and write a couple more scenes from when they were UTM together so we get to see a bit more of their foundations ππ§‘
Ty ty for writing in π₯Ίπ«Άπ§‘π« it makes my day getting to hear ppl chatter with me about the stuff I love with the same level of joy + enthusiasm π₯Ί Iβm so happy ppl are still enjoying the series despite my writing pace βΉοΈπ«π§‘

a/n:Β ty to the anon who asked if I had any wips coming along <3 I started writing this a few months back and had intended to have it ready for pride month but I guess it slipped my mind. Most of it was already written so I had a good base to drop in from π«Ά So here we are, another one for thqc!! (Are they flirting? I canβt tell)
warnings:Β references to UTM times; spring court vibes; feat. a water wraith; cute Feyre/reader momentss :3
word count: 4,142
~~~~
Strands of shade dapple Feyreβs resting body, narrow grass tails swishing their shadows across her cheeks, as if theyβre as eager to kiss each freckle as you are.Β
Her breaths have evened, and though sheβs peaceful the bruise-like smudges beneath her eyes tell another story. So you let her rest.Β
The grassy spot of the day has positioned the two of you near the manorβs border, coinciding with the edge of a great lake whose waters ripple beneath the sweet spring breeze. Lush, verdant grass giving way to ridged reeds and the sharp leaves of typha bordering the glittering grey-green lake. Winds shift in direction, carrying over the soft swishing as water laps against the shore andβhow nice it would be to bathe.Β
Fae complain about the stagnancy under the mountain yet confine themselves within cotton and clothing. Itβs barely been a month but your skin needs to breathe, to be relieved of cloying fabric and rustling linen.Β
Glancing to the nearby trees, Feyreβs usual assortment of sentries are stationed in the shade, keeping cool on the surprisingly balmy day. Should she wake while youβre gone, she wonβt be alone and stranded. And youβll remain within earshot should she wish to call out for you.Β
Lifting from the blanket, you wade your way through the tall grass, carving out a miniature pathway before pausing at the waterβs edge. Waves ripple outwards from the base of plant stems, water-boatmen milling across the surface.Β
Casting aside your shoes and socks, you gingerly step into the shallows, fingers lifting your skirts so the frilled hem isnβt sodden.Β Itβs deeper than youβd anticipated, though still only reaching your ankles. Sediment stirs between your toes, silt clouding the water as you shift your weight experimentally, relishing in the silken tides of water that swish and swirl across bare skin.Β
Raising your skirts higher, you wade deeper into the pond, cool, murky water rising up to your shins, over your knees, swallowing the skin at the bottom of your thighs. Skirts are bunched in your hands, rolled, pressed, and crumpled against your stomach. A warm breeze blows, twisting hair from your face, fluttering the cotton around your sleeves, playing with the teasing frills of your dressβ neckline.Β
Sediment swirls beneath the blue-grey-green surface, and tiny things nip at your calves. Tiny flashes of silver dart about, delivering tiny kisses to the arches of your feet, the swell of your ankle, the back of your knees. Slivers of glittering blue accompany the flashes on occasion, slices of red, and green swirling about as the creatures taste and examine the silt thatβs been stirred up, clinging to the hairs on your legs like dust motes.Β
Further in you wade, the water now clutching at your upper thighs, squeezing at bare flesh. Ripples lap against skin, urging you deeper, to submerge yourself further and drift like a leaf across the surface on your back, pushed along by the breeze until you catch and tangle among the reeds.
Eyes close, and you scent the air. Crisp, and sweet: floral notes blown in from the gardens. The smell of mud and dirt, of algae and damp. Pond water, and the smell of things that are wetter than they should be.Β
Boney things shackle your ankles with surprising force, and the mud slips beneath your feet.Β
Water splashes but the noise is muffled as cold water covers your face, wrapping your body and shoulders, soaking your clothes. You hands dart out and you catch hold of somethingβthin and narrow, but writhing with strength as you right yourself and push from the pond, hauling the grey, slimy thing with you.Β
Itβs an arm.Β
The hand is skeletal and webbed, fingers tipped with flesh-shredding nails.Β
You yank it higher, blinking pond water from your eyes as the world comes back into perspective.
Beneath the water it thrashes, a long tail squirming, tossing shovels of water this way and that. The arm is connected to a shoulder, and a head emerges from the waters, itβs features familiar but twisted in a snarling hiss. Black hair is slathered to its scalp and shoulders, fracturing the face with silky black lines, pale-ish lips curled back from pointed, white-yellow teeth.Β
In your hand its fingers flex, arm tugging in attempts to free itself.Β
You take it by its throat, keeping a firm grip on its wrist and pull it further from the water, minimising the splashes sent out by its tail. The creature hisses, and you recognise the small swell of breasts across its torso. Along its ribcage are small, natural serrations, flaring in and out like lengthy nostrils.Β
Brow furrowing in a mix of confusion and curiosity, you examine the creature closely, peering at its face: big black eyes, swollen and round; grey-green skin, like the murk of silt; sharp teeth littering the inside of its mouth; a fish-like nose; long, silky black hair. A faint memory stirs somewhere. Youβve seen this kind of creature before.Β
Itβs free hand claws at your arm, red staining the pale cotton of your now-torn sleeve.Β
βRelease me,β it hisses, eyes wide, teeth bared. βRelease me.βΒ
You squeeze its throat in warning. βWas it you who toppled me? Or another like you?βΒ
βRelease me,β it hisses again. βThese are our waters. You do not belong here.βΒ
βThese waters lie in the territory of Spring, donβt they?β You counter, adjusting your hold on its throat, eyes dipping questioningly to its chest before returning to the black, gleaming voids of its eyes. Itβs certainly not a high fae female. Or high fae at all, for that matter.Β
You tilt your head. βTell me. What are you?βΒ
It hisses again, tail splashing. βYou would call us water-wraiths.βΒ
You narrow your eyes. βAre you not water-wraiths?βΒ
It hisses again, the serrations at its sides sputtering, skin quivering. Thereβs a gargling noise in its throat, and its tail seems to be growing weaker.Β
Baring your teeth in warning, you drag it to shallower waters. Its nails scrape at the tears in your arm, but fail to do much beyond irritate the wounds.Β
The water reaches your knees, and you settle atop the creature, keeping it pinned with your weight as you shove its torso beneath the surface. Its body jolts, heaving like itβs gasping for air. Once it has eased itself, you pull its face from the water, hair now clear and swept aside. βWhy did you topple me?βΒ
Its features are still twisted, but less so now. Yellowed teeth glitter as theyβre bared up at you in something like a grin. βFish have barely yet returned. All the plumper foods were hunted out of these waters.β Its eyes flash, torso still heaving beneath the water. βYou looked like you could fill our stomachs, for a while.βΒ
You let out a snort of laughter, and the creatureβs glee seems to fade to anger, tail writhing, trying to buck you off. The mirth fades from your mouth, a cool feeling pooling in your stomach.Β
βYouβre hungry?β You ask. Aware of the changed female resting not too far from here.Β
βWithout food, we do not have the option to reproduce. And our species has been hunted these past fifty years.βΒ
You knew it looked familiar. Amarantha kept a pools full to bursting with them. She liked how their grey bodies thrashed and writhed against one another. The tangles they would weave one another into, bound and trapped by the long locks of silky, black hair.Β
Sometimes the High Queen would watch as their frenzies took over, turning water to blood as they tore one another apart.Β
You incline your head. βWhat food do you eat?βΒ
The creature hisses.Β
βYou canβt be that hungry if you wonβt answer me.βΒ
The creature writhes, practically spitting water.Β
βIf you donβt tell me, I canβt find some for you,β you tease, squeezing its throat a bit tighter. βCome on,β you whisper, leaning closer, βI thought you were hungry.βΒ
βAnd what will you ask for in return?β It hisses, clawing with fresh anger at your arm, scratching down your shoulder. Blood leeks into the pond.Β
βThat you allow me to share your waters, for a start,β you muse. βLet me bathe without trying to sink your teeth into me.βΒ
βBring a basket of fish, and I will not next time try to eat you.βΒ
βNeither will any others of your kind. Not next time, nor any time following.βΒ
The creature hisses lowly, but itβs stopped writhing as much. βDeal.βΒ
βYou will also not lay a violent touch on my lover. I would like to bring her here to bathe alongside me.βΒ
βFor two baskets, maybe.βΒ
You pull the creature up from the water, sitting back on where its hips might be were it high fae.Β
βYou will accept a single gutted fish if that is all I am able to find, and you will neβer lay a violent touch on either me or her for as long as we bathe in waters confined to Spring territory.βΒ
Nails dig themselves deep into the open flesh of your arm, and teeth glitter beneath the sun. βYou are lucky my sisters and I havenβt already torn you apart. They watch from deeper waters and would delight in shredding you. Two baskets, fresh fish.βΒ
You tilt your head. Lower your voice. βYou are the only creature in this pond today. Your numbers are dwindled, and your bones struggle to be contained. You will accept what I give.βΒ
βI accept,β the creature hisses, βbut bring me something.βΒ
βIβm glad we could come to an arrangement,β you say, smiling.Β
In the distance, you hear a call.Β
Itβs Feyre. Sheβs awake.Β
βWhen will you return?β The creature asks, hunger plain in its eyes.Β
In the distance, Feyre has swayed to her bare feet, breeze plucking at her dress and hair as she casts her gaze about. She wonβt be able to see you here hidden in the low-waters, between reeds and typha.Β
βFood,β it hisses again. βWhen will you bring me my food?βΒ
You shrug. βSometime. But maybe youβll have starved by then, and then I wonβt have to bring any food at all,β you laugh.Β
You swing a leg off of it, setting it free to return to the murk of the pond. It thrashes away in a gust of splashing mud, dragging ripples across the surface as it swims for deeper waters. It circles back, the upper part of its head watching like a grey smudge from a distance, and you narrow your eyes on it, flexing the fingers that had been wrapped around its throat.Β
βNext time lead with an offer, instead of trying to take what you want by force,β you call.
Feyre calls for you again, the wind carrying the sweet notes of your name in her voice.Β
You turn and step out of the pond, up into the grass, lifting your arms in the air as you wade back the way you came.Β
Light, blue-grey eyes widen as they sweep over you, a frown knotting her sweet, expressive brows. You suppose you are a state, drenched head to toe, stinking of pond water and speckled with silt, leaves, and tiny dying creatures that got caught up in the splash of sediment.Β
Sure enough, her nose twitches as the wind changes, wrinkling faintly before she pushes down on the response.Β
Feyre remains stood on the blanket, bare-footed, the upper section of her hair swept back from her face, tied in a satiny bow that insists on bothering the sensitive peaks of her ears. She folds her arms across her chest, the short puffs of her sleeves puffing further as theyβre stretched, and she leans her weight to one hip. βWhat happened?βΒ
You tilt your head, a smile coming to your lips. βThereβs a pool over there,β you answer, nodding back the way you came. βI wanted to bathe.βΒ
βWerenβt you washed this morning?β She asks, eyeing the murky water dripping from the dirtied cotton. Noting the shredded fabric of your sleeve, the blood staining the fabric.
Itβs your turn to furrow your brows. βWere youwashed by someone this morning?βΒ
A small scowl manifests, and she peers at the tasselled edges of the blanket. βI am waited on hand and foot inside those walls.β The little earrings fashioned after purple and white flowers twinkle at her lobes, swaying in the wind.Β
βYou should order them leave you be,β you say, βitβs what-β¦ You have the ability to do so.βΒ
Feyreβs brows deepen in their glare, and those eyes glide over to you.
Your shoulders slump by a fraction. βSheβs dead, Feyre,β you state blandly. βYou saw it, I saw it. You have some kind of command here, donβt you?β You ask, switching the subject. βBeing connected to him.β
βIt doesnβt work like that.βΒ
βSo you keep sayingβ¦βΒ
βYou know less than I do about how these things work. Iβm the one living it while you get to lay about all day, doing what you like, thinking what you like, wearing what you like.β Thereβs anger in her eyes again, a fleeting spark of defiance.Β
You give her a distrustful look. βYou think Iβd choose to wear this?βΒ
Itβs supposed to bring a smile to her mouth.Β
Instead she remains obstinate, and angered.Β
A breath loosens from beneath your lungs, and you make to step forward, reaching to cup her elbow.Β
Feyre takes a step back. βYouβre soaked, and filthy.βΒ
You lift a brow, a retort on your tongue. Then a better idea slinks between your legs, and you turn on your feet, glancing over your shoulder at her as you pull your hair to the side to display the lopsided ties of your dress. βHelp me dry?βΒ
Not long ago, her cheeks would have warmed to the taste of strawberries. Her eyes would have widened, and, if you were lucky enough, teasing enough, her scent might have shifted.Β
Now she watches you, expression dull, that spark snuffed out in the blink of an eye.Β
But she sighs, and steps forward. Takes ahold of the loose ribbons, beginning to pick at the knots youβd tied when getting dressed that morning. βI should pull these loose and strangle you with them,β she murmurs under her breath. So soft you wouldnβt have heard had she not lifted her chin to whisper them right besides your ear.Β
A thrill unspools within, and teeth nip across your lower lip.Β
βDo what you like,β you whisper back. βYouβre the one holding my reigns.βΒ
βSo you sayβ¦βΒ
You frown, making to turn and face her, but she presses one hand to the back of your hip, keeping you in place. You settle for a glance over your shoulder, trying to catch her eye. βWhat do you mean by that, Feyre.βΒ
βI mean youβve not yet gotten her out of your system,β she whispers, accompanied by a sharp tug to the ribbons, constricting the waist of your dressβtight.Β
βFeeling threatened by the dead?β You murmur back, something syrupy gathering between your thighs.Β
A breath puffs against the nape of your neck, followed by the hot press of her brow as she leans against you. βSometimes I think I can still smell her on you,β Feyre whispers.Β
Your spine goes a little rigid beneath her, body stiffening as her breath ghosts down your back.Β
Inside your chest, your pulse spikes.Β
You swallow past the thickness in your throat.Β
βYouβre going to get dirty if you keep leaning on me like that.βΒ
Feyre hums, and her fingers return to work, pulling the ribbons free until the dress slouches around your shoulders, and sheβs stepping back and away, leaving your skin cold in spite of the open sun. Swallowing, you turn to face her, allowing the soiled cotton to slide and crumple around your waist, pushing it down over your hips. Leaving it in a pile on the floor, before stepping forward onto the clean blanket.Β
Feyre averts her eyes. βYou should sit down, so the sentries donβt see.βΒ
If theyβre half-decent lookouts, theyβll have already seen.Β
βCome. We should drink,β she says somewhat stiffly, settling to the ground, dress fluttering around her and you follow suit. She pours you a glass from the clear jug, ice still clinking as the water swirls. βThereβs cordial too,β she continues. βWant some?βΒ
You look at her, meeting her eyes. βWhat does it taste like?βΒ
Feyre holds your gaze for a moment, before glancing away. Taking the bottle and pouring a bit into her own glass. βElderflower,β she answers. βItβs elderflower cordial.βΒ
βMay I try some of yours?βΒ
Again, she glances at you. Her eyes dip to your chest, then to your stomach, then back to your eyes. βSure.βΒ
You lift a brow. βNo snappy remark?βΒ
βCan I not have a conversation without there being some unaddressed scoring system occurring in the background?β She asks through gritted teeth.Β
Something tugs at he edges of your mouth. βNot a fan of games, hm?βΒ
βWhat do you think?βΒ
βWhat do I think?β You repeat.
βYes. What do you think.β
You smirk. βI think youβre a sore loser.βΒ
Dark ire ruptures in the pits of her eyes, and the glass fractures in her hand, barely retaining its shape.Β
You lean back, propping yourself upon your palms as you look over her. βYouβll end up hurting yourself if you donβt let it out, Feyre,β you tease, watching as icy water leaks out in droplets from between the cracks, blood diluted to a pale pink. βNext time, take it out on someone else.βΒ
The glass smashes in her hand, and she startles out of her fury.Β
Blood sloshes in her palm, pouring down and splashing on her skirts.Β
A tinge of fear creeps into her scent.Β
βI hate this,β she whispers, staring at her hand. βI hate this. I hate this, I hate this, I hate this.β She pulls her knees to her chest, burying her face in her arms. βI hate this.βΒ
Something cool and slithering stirs in your stomach.Β
Shifting onto your hands and knees, you crawl forward. Feyre looks as she was in her cell. Curled up and weakened. You reach forward, fingers curling tenderly around the exposed skin of her ankle, gently wrapping. βFeyreβ¦youβre out. Youβre not under there anymore.βΒ
βDonβt.β Feyre jolts, kicking away your hand. Breathing hard. βDonβt.βΒ
You tilt your head, peering at her.Β
She looks away again, forehead resting on her arms.Β
Then, quietly, βI donβt know what theyβll do to you once our bargain is done.βΒ
You shift on the blanket, moving to sit at her side. Almost touching.Β
βWant to go hunting?β You ask, βmaybe I could come with you this time?βΒ
No response.
βYou could show me around the gardens? I havenβt gotten to see them yet,β you murmur.Β
Her pulse is rapid, blood bouncing through her body, thumping through her throat.Β
βWhat about where you lived as a human?β You ask, and her breathing catches. You peer at her sidelong. βYou never said much under the mountain. Was is different below the wall?βΒ
Feyreβs quiet for a long whileβlong enough for her heartbeat to steady, for her breathing to regulate. The tremble in her shoulders subsides, replaced by light shivers as the wind blows beneath a grey sky. Trees whisper, and the grasses sway back and forth. Eventually she looks up, eyes once more grey, and dull. She perches her chin atop her forearms, gazing out across the swirling fields to the frothing woodland beyond.Β
One of the sentries approaches quietly through the grass.Β
βMy lady, youβve hurt yourself,β he states.Β
βItβs fine. The glass broke.βΒ
He shifts uneasily. βI need to take you to see a healer.β
βI do not need a healer,β Feyre murmurs.Β
βWe at least need to clean the blood. Please come with me back to the manor.βΒ
Feyre sighs, and rests her forehead on her arms. She lifts her head to look at the sentry. βWould you bring cloth and bandages out to me? Iβm enjoying beingβ¦β She pauses, and allows her eyes to turn a bit distant. Then she shakes her head.Β
The sentry shifts again. βNo, of course. I will return to you swiftly. Forgive my lack of compassion.βΒ
Feyre shifts on the blanket. βWould you also return with a fresh dress?β
The sentry glances to where youβre relaxed a little behind Feyre. His lips thin, but he nods, and leaves.Β
Both of you watch him depart.Β
You nudge her. βSneak.βΒ
She doesnβt look at you. βI donβt know what youβre talking about.βΒ
A smile tugs at your lips, peering at her fondly.Β
βWhatever you say, Feyre,β you murmur to the wind, glancing out across the fields.
βYou should cover yourself when he returns. Itβs not appropriate for you to be naked.β
βSo Iβm told.βΒ
Feyreβs teeth grind. βYouβre already testing Tamlinβs patience. If he hears about this it will only make things worse.β
You huff a laugh. βAnd whatβs he going to do? Roar at me? Throw me? Hit me?β You turn to look at herβher brows furrowed, mouth parted and lips turned down at their edges. You lean forward, lowering your voice to a whisper. βWould that upset you, Feyre?βΒ
βI wouldnβt like to see someone hurt.βΒ
βYou think he would, then?βΒ
A scowl twists her sweet brows. βDo you derive pleasure from being so deceptive?βΒ
βItβs just a bit of fun, Feyre. You need joy to live,β you smile.Β
βIβm not sure you experience joy like the rest of us.βΒ
βAnd who is βusβ, in this instance?β You ask, peering at her. βHumans? Fae?βΒ
βNormal people.β She snaps.Β
βYou think youβre normal?β You laugh. βNobody else does.βΒ
She looks like sheβs about to snap something more but the sentry is returning.Β
βFold the blanket over your lap,β Feyre says tightly. βYou can cover your chest with your arms.βΒ
βIβm still wet,β you tease, lips curved. βI donβt want to get the fabric dirty.βΒ
βHe was looking at you,β she hisses under her breath.Β
βThey all look, Feyre. It doesnβt matter what clothing I wear.βΒ
βI imagine thatβs more to do with you being herwhore than your clothes.βΒ
βAnd yet Iβve been at your beck and call since the moment she died and youβve yet to make a single request of me.β You lift your attention to her watercolour eyes. βI would have thought youβd know better than anyone the kinds of things I can do.β
βIβm a woman. Itβs different.β She takes a breath. βI wouldnβt treat someone like that. Look at someone like that.βΒ
A smirk curves your lips, and her eyes flick down. βNot for a lack of want, Feyre.βΒ
βYour bandages, my lady. And a dress for theβ¦β The sentry trails off, unsure of your address.Β
Feyre shifts, moving to press more firmly against you, slightly shielding you from view. She thanks the sentry, and he deposits a basket of bandages, cloth, and fabric atop the picnic blanket. He gives a slight bow to Feyre, then leaves.Β
βAnd if I request that you behave properly while you remain here?β Feyre mutters, reaching for the wicker handle. You shift onto your knees, pulling the folded, ruffled cotton free. Hands brushing in the basket.
βThat lack of verbal clarity is what almost cost you your life.βΒ
βIs this more of your βfunβ?β Feyre murmurs, retrieving a fresh roll of gauze.
βIβm trying to teach you something valuable. Since youβre so inclined to be making bargains left, right, and centre.βΒ
βIβve not made that many.βΒ
βNo? Letβs seeβ¦you made one with my lover Amarantha, you made one with me, andβ¦oh! Thatβs right. One with Rhysand too. The mortal enemy of the male youβre supposed to wed.βΒ
βI was fighting for my life.β She mutters, picking at the gauze with the edge of her nail.
βAnd you might have to again. So maybe next time youβll have a better chance of surviving since you did so poorly the first time.βΒ
βPoorly?β Feyre hisses, abandoning the gauze in her lap. βI saved Tamlin. I saved everyone trapped under the mountain. I saved Prythian.βΒ
βYou murdered the female who chose me, Feyre.β You tilt your head, and smile. βYou murdered some others, too, and got yourself killed. Am I so heartless for wanting to prevent that?βΒ
Her eyes darken, storms gathering across the waters. βI didnβt ask for your help.βΒ
βI thought you wanted me on best behaviour,β you whisper, leaving the clean dress discarded, out of sight.
βI should have strangled you with those ribbons,β she hisses softly, at last yanking the roll of bandages free, hardly bothering to clean the slightly-puckered-skin before getting started on the binding.Β
a/n:Β ty to the anon who asked if I had any wips coming along <3 I started writing this a few months back and had intended to have it ready for pride month but I guess it slipped my mind. Strands of shade dapple Feyreβs resting body, narrow grass tails swishing their shadows across her cheeks, as if theyβre as eager to kiss each freckle as you are.Β
Her breaths have evened, and though sheβs peaceful the bruise-like smudges beneath her eyes tell another story. So you let her rest.Β
The grassy spot of the day has positioned the two of you near the manorβs border, coinciding with the edge of a great lake whose waters ripple beneath the sweet spring breeze. Lush, verdant grass giving way to ridged reeds and the sharp leaves of typha bordering the glittering grey-green lake. Winds shift in direction, carrying over the soft swishing as water laps against the shore andβhow nice it would be to bathe.Β
Fae complain about the stagnancy under the mountain yet confine themselves within cotton and clothing. Itβs barely been a month but your skin needs to breathe, to be relieved of cloying fabric and rustling linen.Β
Glancing to the nearby trees, Feyreβs usual assortment of sentries are stationed in the shade, keeping cool on the surprisingly balmy day. Should she wake while youβre gone, she wonβt be alone and stranded. And youβll remain within earshot should she wish to call out for you.Β
Lifting from the blanket, you wade your way through the tall grass, carving out a miniature pathway before pausing at the waterβs edge. Waves ripple outwards from the base of plant stems, water-boatmen milling across the surface.Β
Casting aside your shoes and socks, you gingerly step into the shallows, fingers lifting your skirts so the frilled hem isnβt sodden.Β Itβs deeper than youβd anticipated, though still only reaching your ankles. Sediment stirs between your toes, silt clouding the water as you shift your weight experimentally, relishing in the silken tides of water that swish and swirl across bare skin.Β
Raising your skirts higher, you wade deeper into the pond, cool, murky water rising up to your shins, over your knees, swallowing the skin at the bottom of your thighs. Skirts are bunched in your hands, rolled, pressed, and crumpled against your stomach. A warm breeze blows, twisting hair from your face, fluttering the cotton around your sleeves, playing with the teasing frills of your dressβ neckline.Β
Sediment swirls beneath the blue-grey-green surface, and tiny things nip at your calves. Tiny flashes of silver dart about, delivering tiny kisses to the arches of your feet, the swell of your ankle, the back of your knees. Slivers of glittering blue accompany the flashes on occasion, slices of red, and green swirling about as the creatures taste and examine the silt thatβs been stirred up, clinging to the hairs on your legs like dust motes.Β
Further in you wade, the water now clutching at your upper thighs, squeezing at bare flesh. Ripples lap against skin, urging you deeper, to submerge yourself further and drift like a leaf across the surface on your back, pushed along by the breeze until you catch and tangle among the reeds.
Eyes close, and you scent the air. Crisp, and sweet: floral notes blown in from the gardens. The smell of mud and dirt, of algae and damp. Pond water, and the smell of things that are wetter than they should be.Β
Boney things shackle your ankles with surprising force, and the mud slips beneath your feet.Β
Water splashes but the noise is muffled as cold water covers your face, wrapping your body and shoulders, soaking your clothes. You hands dart out and you catch hold of somethingβthin and narrow, but writhing with strength as you right yourself and push from the pond, hauling the grey, slimy thing with you.Β
Itβs an arm.Β
The hand is skeletal and webbed, fingers tipped with flesh-shredding nails.Β
You yank it higher, blinking pond water from your eyes as the world comes back into perspective.
Beneath the water it thrashes, a long tail squirming, tossing shovels of water this way and that. The arm is connected to a shoulder, and a head emerges from the waters, itβs features familiar but twisted in a snarling hiss. Black hair is slathered to its scalp and shoulders, fracturing the face with silky black lines, pale-ish lips curled back from pointed, white-yellow teeth.Β
In your hand its fingers flex, arm tugging in attempts to free itself.Β
You take it by its throat, keeping a firm grip on its wrist and pull it further from the water, minimising the splashes sent out by its tail. The creature hisses, and you recognise the small swell of breasts across its torso. Along its ribcage are small, natural serrations, flaring in and out like lengthy nostrils.Β
Brow furrowing in a mix of confusion and curiosity, you examine the creature closely, peering at its face: big black eyes, swollen and round; grey-green skin, like the murk of silt; sharp teeth littering the inside of its mouth; a fish-like nose; long, silky black hair. A faint memory stirs somewhere. Youβve seen this kind of creature before.Β
Itβs free hand claws at your arm, red staining the pale cotton of your now-torn sleeve.Β
βRelease me,β it hisses, eyes wide, teeth bared. βRelease me.βΒ
You squeeze its throat in warning. βWas it you who toppled me? Or another like you?βΒ
βRelease me,β it hisses again. βThese are our waters. You do not belong here.βΒ
βThese waters lie in the territory of Spring, donβt they?β You counter, adjusting your hold on its throat, eyes dipping questioningly to its chest before returning to the black, gleaming voids of its eyes. Itβs certainly not a high fae female. Or high fae at all, for that matter.Β
You tilt your head. βTell me. What are you?βΒ
It hisses again, tail splashing. βYou would call us water-wraiths.βΒ
You narrow your eyes. βAre you not water-wraiths?βΒ
It hisses again, the serrations at its sides sputtering, skin quivering. Thereβs a gargling noise in its throat, and its tail seems to be growing weaker.Β
Baring your teeth in warning, you drag it to shallower waters. Its nails scrape at the tears in your arm, but fail to do much beyond irritate the wounds.Β
The water reaches your knees, and you settle atop the creature, keeping it pinned with your weight as you shove its torso beneath the surface. Its body jolts, heaving like itβs gasping for air. Once it has eased itself, you pull its face from the water, hair now clear and swept aside. βWhy did you topple me?βΒ
Its features are still twisted, but less so now. Yellowed teeth glitter as theyβre bared up at you in something like a grin. βFish have barely yet returned. All the plumper foods were hunted out of these waters.β Its eyes flash, torso still heaving beneath the water. βYou looked like you could fill our stomachs, for a while.βΒ
You let out a snort of laughter, and the creatureβs glee seems to fade to anger, tail writhing, trying to buck you off. The mirth fades from your mouth, a cool feeling pooling in your stomach.Β
βYouβre hungry?β You ask. Aware of the changed female resting not too far from here.Β
βWithout food, we do not have the option to reproduce. And our species has been hunted these past fifty years.βΒ
You knew it looked familiar. Amarantha kept a pools full to bursting with them. She liked how their grey bodies thrashed and writhed against one another. The tangles they would weave one another into, bound and trapped by the long locks of silky, black hair.Β
Sometimes the High Queen would watch as their frenzies took over, turning water to blood as they tore one another apart.Β
You incline your head. βWhat food do you eat?βΒ
The creature hisses.Β
βYou canβt be that hungry if you wonβt answer me.βΒ
The creature writhes, practically spitting water.Β
βIf you donβt tell me, I canβt find some for you,β you tease, squeezing its throat a bit tighter. βCome on,β you whisper, leaning closer, βI thought you were hungry.βΒ
βAnd what will you ask for in return?β It hisses, clawing with fresh anger at your arm, scratching down your shoulder. Blood leeks into the pond.Β
βThat you allow me to share your waters, for a start,β you muse. βLet me bathe without trying to sink your teeth into me.βΒ
βBring a basket of fish, and I will not next time try to eat you.βΒ
βNeither will any others of your kind. Not next time, nor any time following.βΒ
The creature hisses lowly, but itβs stopped writhing as much. βDeal.βΒ
βYou will also not lay a violent touch on my lover. I would like to bring her here to bathe alongside me.βΒ
βFor two baskets, maybe.βΒ
You pull the creature up from the water, sitting back on where its hips might be were it high fae.Β
βYou will accept a single gutted fish if that is all I am able to find, and you will neβer lay a violent touch on either me or her for as long as we bathe in waters confined to Spring territory.βΒ
Nails dig themselves deep into the open flesh of your arm, and teeth glitter beneath the sun. βYou are lucky my sisters and I havenβt already torn you apart. They watch from deeper waters and would delight in shredding you. Two baskets, fresh fish.βΒ
You tilt your head. Lower your voice. βYou are the only creature in this pond today. Your numbers are dwindled, and your bones struggle to be contained. You will accept what I give.βΒ
βI accept,β the creature hisses, βbut bring me something.βΒ
βIβm glad we could come to an arrangement,β you say, smiling.Β
In the distance, you hear a call.Β
Itβs Feyre. Sheβs awake.Β
βWhen will you return?β The creature asks, hunger plain in its eyes.Β
In the distance, Feyre has swayed to her bare feet, breeze plucking at her dress and hair as she casts her gaze about. She wonβt be able to see you here hidden in the low-waters, between reeds and typha.Β
βFood,β it hisses again. βWhen will you bring me my food?βΒ
You shrug. βSometime. But maybe youβll have starved by then, and then I wonβt have to bring any food at all,β you laugh.Β
You swing a leg off of it, setting it free to return to the murk of the pond. It thrashes away in a gust of splashing mud, dragging ripples across the surface as it swims for deeper waters. It circles back, the upper part of its head watching like a grey smudge from a distance, and you narrow your eyes on it, flexing the fingers that had been wrapped around its throat.Β
βNext time lead with an offer, instead of trying to take what you want by force,β you call.
Feyre calls for you again, the wind carrying the sweet notes of your name in her voice.Β
You turn and step out of the pond, up into the grass, lifting your arms in the air as you wade back the way you came.Β
Light, blue-grey eyes widen as they sweep over you, a frown knotting her sweet, expressive brows. You suppose you are a state, drenched head to toe, stinking of pond water and speckled with silt, leaves, and tiny dying creatures that got caught up in the splash of sediment.Β
Sure enough, her nose twitches as the wind changes, wrinkling faintly before she pushes down on the response.Β
Feyre remains stood on the blanket, bare-footed, the upper section of her hair swept back from her face, tied in a satiny bow that insists on bothering the sensitive peaks of her ears. She folds her arms across her chest, the short puffs of her sleeves puffing further as theyβre stretched, and she leans her weight to one hip. βWhat happened?βΒ
You tilt your head, a smile coming to your lips. βThereβs a pool over there,β you answer, nodding back the way you came. βI wanted to bathe.βΒ
βWerenβt you washed this morning?β She asks, eyeing the murky water dripping from the dirtied cotton. Noting the shredded fabric of your sleeve, the blood staining the fabric.
Itβs your turn to furrow your brows. βWere youwashed by someone this morning?βΒ
A small scowl manifests, and she peers at the tasselled edges of the blanket. βI am waited on hand and foot inside those walls.β The little earrings fashioned after purple and white flowers twinkle at her lobes, swaying in the wind.Β
βYou should order them leave you be,β you say, βitβs what-β¦ You have the ability to do so.βΒ
Feyreβs brows deepen in their glare, and those eyes glide over to you.
Your shoulders slump by a fraction. βSheβs dead, Feyre,β you state blandly. βYou saw it, I saw it. You have some kind of command here, donβt you?β You ask, switching the subject. βBeing connected to him.β
βIt doesnβt work like that.βΒ
βSo you keep sayingβ¦βΒ
βYou know less than I do about how these things work. Iβm the one living it while you get to lay about all day, doing what you like, thinking what you like, wearing what you like.β Thereβs anger in her eyes again, a fleeting spark of defiance.Β
You give her a distrustful look. βYou think Iβd choose to wear this?βΒ
Itβs supposed to bring a smile to her mouth.Β
Instead she remains obstinate, and angered.Β
A breath loosens from beneath your lungs, and you make to step forward, reaching to cup her elbow.Β
Feyre takes a step back. βYouβre soaked, and filthy.βΒ
You lift a brow, a retort on your tongue. Then a better idea slinks between your legs, and you turn on your feet, glancing over your shoulder at her as you pull your hair to the side to display the lopsided ties of your dress. βHelp me dry?βΒ
Not long ago, her cheeks would have warmed to the taste of strawberries. Her eyes would have widened, and, if you were lucky enough, teasing enough, her scent might have shifted.Β
Now she watches you, expression dull, that spark snuffed out in the blink of an eye.Β
But she sighs, and steps forward. Takes ahold of the loose ribbons, beginning to pick at the knots youβd tied when getting dressed that morning. βI should pull these loose and strangle you with them,β she murmurs under her breath. So soft you wouldnβt have heard had she not lifted her chin to whisper them right besides your ear.Β
A thrill unspools within, and teeth nip across your lower lip.Β
βDo what you like,β you whisper back. βYouβre the one holding my reigns.βΒ
βSo you sayβ¦βΒ
You frown, making to turn and face her, but she presses one hand to the back of your hip, keeping you in place. You settle for a glance over your shoulder, trying to catch her eye. βWhat do you mean by that, Feyre.βΒ
βI mean youβve not yet gotten her out of your system,β she whispers, accompanied by a sharp tug to the ribbons, constricting the waist of your dressβtight.Β
βFeeling threatened by the dead?β You murmur back, something syrupy gathering between your thighs.Β
A breath puffs against the nape of your neck, followed by the hot press of her brow as she leans against you. βSometimes I think I can still smell her on you,β Feyre whispers.Β
Your spine goes a little rigid beneath her, body stiffening as her breath ghosts down your back.Β
Inside your chest, your pulse spikes.Β
You swallow past the thickness in your throat.Β
βYouβre going to get dirty if you keep leaning on me like that.βΒ
Feyre hums, and her fingers return to work, pulling the ribbons free until the dress slouches around your shoulders, and sheβs stepping back and away, leaving your skin cold in spite of the open sun. Swallowing, you turn to face her, allowing the soiled cotton to slide and crumple around your waist, pushing it down over your hips. Leaving it in a pile on the floor, before stepping forward onto the clean blanket.Β
Feyre averts her eyes. βYou should sit down, so the sentries donβt see.βΒ
If theyβre half-decent lookouts, theyβll have already seen.Β
βCome. We should drink,β she says somewhat stiffly, settling to the ground, dress fluttering around her and you follow suit. She pours you a glass from the clear jug, ice still clinking as the water swirls. βThereβs cordial too,β she continues. βWant some?βΒ
You look at her, meeting her eyes. βWhat does it taste like?βΒ
Feyre holds your gaze for a moment, before glancing away. Taking the bottle and pouring a bit into her own glass. βElderflower,β she answers. βItβs elderflower cordial.βΒ
βMay I try some of yours?βΒ
Again, she glances at you. Her eyes dip to your chest, then to your stomach, then back to your eyes. βSure.βΒ
You lift a brow. βNo snappy remark?βΒ
βCan I not have a conversation without there being some unaddressed scoring system occurring in the background?β She asks through gritted teeth.Β
Something tugs at he edges of your mouth. βNot a fan of games, hm?βΒ
βWhat do you think?βΒ
βWhat do I think?β You repeat.
βYes. What do you think.β
You smirk. βI think youβre a sore loser.βΒ
Dark ire ruptures in the pits of her eyes, and the glass fractures in her hand, barely retaining its shape.Β
You lean back, propping yourself upon your palms as you look over her. βYouβll end up hurting yourself if you donβt let it out, Feyre,β you tease, watching as icy water leaks out in droplets from between the cracks, blood diluted to a pale pink. βNext time, take it out on someone else.βΒ
The glass smashes in her hand, and she startles out of her fury.Β
Blood sloshes in her palm, pouring down and splashing on her skirts.Β
A tinge of fear creeps into her scent.Β
βI hate this,β she whispers, staring at her hand. βI hate this. I hate this, I hate this, I hate this.β She pulls her knees to her chest, burying her face in her arms. βI hate this.βΒ
Something cool and slithering stirs in your stomach.Β
Shifting onto your hands and knees, you crawl forward. Feyre looks as she was in her cell. Curled up and weakened. You reach forward, fingers curling tenderly around the exposed skin of her ankle, gently wrapping. βFeyreβ¦youβre out. Youβre not under there anymore.βΒ
βDonβt.β Feyre jolts, kicking away your hand. Breathing hard. βDonβt.βΒ
You tilt your head, peering at her.Β
She looks away again, forehead resting on her arms.Β
Then, quietly, βI donβt know what theyβll do to you once our bargain is done.βΒ
You shift on the blanket, moving to sit at her side. Almost touching.Β
βWant to go hunting?β You ask, βmaybe I could come with you this time?βΒ
No response.
βYou could show me around the gardens? I havenβt gotten to see them yet,β you murmur.Β
Her pulse is rapid, blood bouncing through her body, thumping through her throat.Β
βWhat about where you lived as a human?β You ask, and her breathing catches. You peer at her sidelong. βYou never said much under the mountain. Was is different below the wall?βΒ
Feyreβs quiet for a long whileβlong enough for her heartbeat to steady, for her breathing to regulate. The tremble in her shoulders subsides, replaced by light shivers as the wind blows beneath a grey sky. Trees whisper, and the grasses sway back and forth. Eventually she looks up, eyes once more grey, and dull. She perches her chin atop her forearms, gazing out across the swirling fields to the frothing woodland beyond.Β
One of the sentries approaches quietly through the grass.Β
βMy lady, youβve hurt yourself,β he states.Β
βItβs fine. The glass broke.βΒ
He shifts uneasily. βI need to take you to see a healer.β
βI do not need a healer,β Feyre murmurs.Β
βWe at least need to clean the blood. Please come with me back to the manor.βΒ
Feyre sighs, and rests her forehead on her arms. She lifts her head to look at the sentry. βWould you bring cloth and bandages out to me? Iβm enjoying beingβ¦β She pauses, and allows her eyes to turn a bit distant. Then she shakes her head.Β
The sentry shifts again. βNo, of course. I will return to you swiftly. Forgive my lack of compassion.βΒ
Feyre shifts on the blanket. βWould you also return with a fresh dress?β
The sentry glances to where youβre relaxed a little behind Feyre. His lips thin, but he nods, and leaves.Β
Both of you watch him depart.Β
You nudge her. βSneak.βΒ
She doesnβt look at you. βI donβt know what youβre talking about.βΒ
A smile tugs at your lips, peering at her fondly.Β
βWhatever you say, Feyre,β you murmur to the wind, glancing out across the fields.
βYou should cover yourself when he returns. Itβs not appropriate for you to be naked.β
βSo Iβm told.βΒ
Feyreβs teeth grind. βYouβre already testing Tamlinβs patience. If he hears about this it will only make things worse.β
You huff a laugh. βAnd whatβs he going to do? Roar at me? Throw me? Hit me?β You turn to look at herβher brows furrowed, mouth parted and lips turned down at their edges. You lean forward, lowering your voice to a whisper. βWould that upset you, Feyre?βΒ
βI wouldnβt like to see someone hurt.βΒ
βYou think he would, then?βΒ
A scowl twists her sweet brows. βDo you derive pleasure from being so deceptive?βΒ
βItβs just a bit of fun, Feyre. You need joy to live,β you smile.Β
βIβm not sure you experience joy like the rest of us.βΒ
βAnd who is βusβ, in this instance?β You ask, peering at her. βHumans? Fae?βΒ
βNormal people.β She snaps.Β
βYou think youβre normal?β You laugh. βNobody else does.βΒ
She looks like sheβs about to snap something more but the sentry is returning.Β
βFold the blanket over your lap,β Feyre says tightly. βYou can cover your chest with your arms.βΒ
βIβm still wet,β you tease, lips curved. βI donβt want to get the fabric dirty.βΒ
βHe was looking at you,β she hisses under her breath.Β
βThey all look, Feyre. It doesnβt matter what clothing I wear.βΒ
βI imagine thatβs more to do with you being her whore than your clothes.βΒ
βAnd yet Iβve been at your beck and call since the moment she died and youβve yet to make a single request of me.β You lift your attention to her watercolour eyes. βI would have thought youβd know better than anyone the kinds of things I can do.β
βIβm a woman. Itβs different.β She takes a breath. βI wouldnβt treat someone like that. Look at someone like that.βΒ
A smirk curves your lips, and her eyes flick down. βNot for a lack of want, Feyre.βΒ
βYour bandages, my lady. And a dress for theβ¦β The sentry trails off, unsure of your address.Β
Feyre shifts, moving to press more firmly against you, slightly shielding you from view. She thanks the sentry, and he deposits a basket of bandages, cloth, and fabric atop the picnic blanket. He gives a slight bow to Feyre, then leaves.Β
βAnd if I request that you behave properly while you remain here?β Feyre mutters, reaching for the wicker handle. You shift onto your knees, pulling the folded, ruffled cotton free. Hands brushing in the basket.
βThat lack of verbal clarity is what almost cost you your life.βΒ
βIs this more of your βfunβ?β Feyre murmurs, retrieving a fresh roll of gauze.
βIβm trying to teach you something valuable. Since youβre so inclined to be making bargains left, right, and centre.βΒ
βIβve not made that many.βΒ
βNo? Letβs seeβ¦you made one with my lover Amarantha, you made one with me, andβ¦oh! Thatβs right. One with Rhysand too. The mortal enemy of the male youβre supposed to wed.βΒ
βI was fighting for my life.β She mutters, picking at the gauze with the edge of her nail.
βAnd you might have to again. So maybe next time youβll have a better chance of surviving since you did so poorly the first time.βΒ
βPoorly?β Feyre hisses, abandoning the gauze in her lap. βI saved Tamlin. I saved everyone trapped under the mountain. I saved Prythian.βΒ
βYou murdered the female who chose me, Feyre.β You tilt your head, and smile. βYou murdered some others, too, and got yourself killed. Am I so heartless for wanting to prevent that?βΒ
Her eyes darken, storms gathering across the waters. βI didnβt ask for your help.βΒ
βI thought you wanted me on best behaviour,β you whisper, leaving the clean dress discarded, out of sight.
βI should have strangled you with those ribbons,β she hisses softly, at last yanking the roll of bandages free, hardly bothering to clean the slightly-puckered-skin before getting started on the binding.Β
Ignoring my confusion if the requests are open or not. Do you have any wips you plan to post soon?
Requests are closed!!!!!!!!
Youβre chill to discuss an idea with me if youβre super passionate about it but I might not have the capacity to respond. As long as it isnβt a req I wonβt be angry with you π
In terms of wips I doubt it. I have soooooo much going on rn itβs actually insane. which sucks because I think writing would help lmao
And The Wind Pushed Her Forward: Emerie x Jesminda
For @sjmsapphic Day 3
Thank you for this prompt omg I'm glad you are encouraging me to indulge in my Jes and Emerie parallels! As always, I ended up writing a bit more than a drabble π«£
Rated Teen and Up || One-shot || 3,277 words
Main tags: Canon Divergence, Love At First Sight, Sexism, Making Out, Running Way
Summary: A stranger arrives in Windhaven, pulling at Emerie's longing for freedom and adventure.
Read on Ao3
Snippet below cut:
Emerie scanned the treeline, unsure of what, exactly, she was looking for. The gossipers accurately noted that the stranger did not take up residency in the town's inn, but she still frequented their market for all three days since her sudden arrival. She had to be in the woods somewhere, but Emerie could only guess where. In a log hollowed out from decades of decay? In a secret cavern, maybe, like some vixen nesting in her warm den? Or maybe she somehow made a home in the trees, no doubt one of the safest places to hide from the beasts of Illyria.
Deeper in the forest, she walked.
Then, amongst the whispering branches, a soft humming could be heard, along with the fluttering of insect wings.
With her heart dancing under her skin, Emerie gazed up, blinking at the bright morning light. The trees, forever dark and spindly in the formidable lands and barren soil, made for a terrible cover: through the thin canopy, a pair of bare feet and a golden dress dangled from the great arm of a chinar tree. The faerie leaned back against the trunk with her eyes closed, humming a deep, sultry tune that filled Emerie with calm.
She stopped just below the faerie's tree. With a clearer sight on the female, Emerie's heart suddenly quickened. With lust and intrigue, yes, but also of surprise.
Drapping on either side of the faerie's massive tree branch were two opalescent wings. Their shape and pattern resembled one of a cicada or a bee, but with colors Emerie had never seen in all her life, even in her home's most vivid autumns: deep reds of ruby and garnet, sweet persimmon and molten gold, yellow as pale and bright as the daytime sun. The vibrant wings fluttered gently as the female hummed, the noise harmonizing with the voice of the faerie and the surrounding forest alike.
Her presence seemingly went unnoticed: the stranger continued to hum with her eyes closed and head tilted to the canopy. Emerie worked up the courage to speak.
"The gossip is true, then," she called out. "You are a nymph or a harpy."
The humming stopped. Opal eyes flickered open, studying the skeletal canopy for a moment before gazing down at Emerie.Β
Emerie stared back, her eagerness faltering.
But the bow of the female's lip crinkled as she smiled down at her. "I have travelled very far, my love, and I have heard such boring rumors a thousand times over."
Gods, her voiceβ¦it was of a pealing bell, tender and languid in the forest's cold expanse. An ache spread throughout Emerie's heart like warmth from a den fire, but she steeled herself. "There were more beautiful ones," she replied. "One of the warriors said you were a temptress forged from embers of the gods."
Even from standing on the ground, she could see the female rolling her eyes. She cocked her head down at her, shimmering black strands falling from her shoulders and dripping from her perch. "Any female is a temptress in a male's eyes, are we not?"
Emerie couldn't help but think of the potential truth in those words, however insulting they were. The faerie's dress hung loosely around her slender legs, uncaring of the skin that showed. As her eyes slid over the warm brown of the female's calf and the hem draping over her thigh, she thought of what the females of her village would say at such a display. What the warrior males would say, with sneers wide and eyes dark and staring. But then she thought of all the males who had come into her store to leer at any inch ofΒ herΒ body, however hidden behind her counter or under several layers of furs.Β
Male temptation, Emerie reminded herself, was different from admiration and female reverence. And she had always felt ardor for the stranger, no matter how much skin showed. And gods, even her very smell was a lure in the river of air between them: the honeyed apple and spice wafted down, coating Emerie's skin like mist.
The faerie sitting in this tree was not a temptress, or some monster wreaking havoc on the Illyrian's quiet country life. She was simply a female, enjoying the freedoms of life Emerie so longingly wished to experience, even if such freedoms were a hiked-up dress to wade in a cool stream, or wind playing through undone hair.
Hiiii!! I always love coming to your blog and reading your newest works. Your writing style is just so effortless for me to read and enjoy, I love it. Tomorrow is June 6th and it will be one year since the last cbmthy update. I was wondering if the series is concluded or if more is to be expected. Either way I love your work and look forward to more!
No way it's been a year π
omgggggggggg
Okay so first of all, thank you!! <3 I'm getting some joy back into my system now that the sun is coming out again! In regards to CBMTHY--I'm not really sure what's happening with it? Probably the best way to put it/phrase it would be by saying that it's in/on a hiatus? I'm not actively working on it, and it's just so. fucking. depressing.
I feel like I've worked myself into a hole with how it's been written up until now and there are just so many other things I'd rather write that would bring me so much more joy? Of course the satisfaction of executing the idea I have for ch. 26 would be incredible, and I would love to do so at some point, but idk if I have it in me currently as a writer, or as a person? Again, it's just such a depressing and hopeless story
Not sure how ppl feel about it anymore but I know there was a period when I was actively writing it that a lot of people cared about that story and I think could see parts of themselves in the emotional tangle happening. It's not at its end, nor have I yet decided to discontinue it, it's just not being worked on at the moment.
