background: with cooper wanting to find a girlfriend, he gets help from his teammates and during a off practice scrimmage vs some of the womens basketball team, he shoots his shot.

notes: the fic guide is here! im here for this!! im lowkey scared to write this because not alot of people interact with coop fics nor reblog with their opinion.
warning: this is a alternative universe, keep this in mind, only illusions to smut reader is a basketball player.
Sneakers squeaked against the hardwood, the echo bouncing up into the rafters where banners hung like reminders of greatness. It was supposed to be a light run. Just a scrimmage. Nothing serious.
But the second Cooper stepped onto the court, it stopped being casual.
He rolled the ball in his hands, jaw set, eyes scanning. Across from him, the women’s squad filtered in, laughing, stretching, talking trash already. Ashlon flicked her ponytail over her shoulder, grinning. Toby bounced on her toes, already hyped. Delaney leaned in close to Y/N, whispering something that made her roll her eyes.
Y/N stood a little off to the side, tightening her laces, focused. Calm. Unbothered.
Behind Cooper, his teammates were anything but.
“Yo,” Caleb muttered, nudging Kon, “he’s been weird all week.”
Kon snorted. “He’s not weird, he’s down bad.”
“Shut up,” Cooper mumbled, not even looking at them.
“You need a girlfriend,” Tyrese added casually, spinning a ball on his finger. “Bad.”
Cooper shot him a look. “I’m here to hoop.”
“Yeah,” Kon said, smirking, “and maybe fall in love mid-game.”
“Y’all are so annoying.”
Across the court, the girls were catching onto the energy.
“Ashlon,” Caleb called out, grinning, “you guarding Coop, right?”
Ashlon laughed immediately. “Absolutely not.”
“Toby?” Tyrese tried.
Toby held her hands up. “I like winning, thanks.”
“Delaney?” Kon added.
Delaney didn’t even hesitate. She pointed directly at Y/N. “Oh no. Y/N got him.”
Y/N looked up slowly, already shaking her head. “Why me?”
“Because,” Delaney said sweetly, “you’re the only one who won’t fold.”
Ashlon chimed in, “And you don’t care about all that… whatever this is.” She gestured between Cooper and his teammates, who were now very obviously watching.
Y/N sighed, pushing off her knees and standing upright. Her eyes finally met Cooper’s across the court, just for a second.
He looked away first.
“…Fine,” she said. “I’ll guard him.”
The boys behind Cooper erupted.
“OHHHH-”
“Yeah Coop!”
“Lock in, lover boy!”
“Shut UP,” Cooper snapped, but there was the faintest flush creeping up his neck.
The game started fast.
No easing into it. No feeling it out.
Y/N picked Cooper up full court immediately, sliding into position like she’d been waiting for this. Her stance was low, balanced, eyes sharp.
Cooper blinked once, surprised.
Then he smirked.
“Okay,” he muttered. “I see you.”
“Don’t talk,” she shot back. “Just hoop.”
That did something to him.
The first possession, he tried to size her up, slow dribble, testing. Y/N didn’t bite. Stayed right in front, hands up.
“Clamp that,” Ashlon yelled from the sideline.
“Yeah Y/N!” Delaney added.
Cooper passed out, jogging back on defense, but there was a different look in his eyes now. Focused. Intrigued.
Next play, he came harder.
Caught the ball on the wing, jab step, quick. Y/N shifted with him perfectly. He drove left and she cut him off. Spin move, she stayed attached.
“Yo,” Caleb muttered under his breath, “she’s lowkey locking him.”
Kon grinned. “He likes it.”
“Shut up,” Tyrese said, but he was laughing.
Cooper reset, then exploded forward again this time faster, stronger. Y/N slid, chest up, absorbing the contact as best she could.
Until he clipped her.
It wasn’t dirty. Just momentum. Two players moving fast, both refusing to give an inch.
Her foot caught slightly as his shoulder brushed her, and suddenly she was falling.
There was a split second where everything slowed.
The sound of sneakers. The echo of someone yelling. The ball bouncing away.
And then Cooper’s arms wrapped around her.
Firm. Instinctive.
He caught her before she hit the floor, one hand at her back, the other steadying her arm. Their bodies collided for real this time, but controlled and balanced.
The gym went quiet for half a beat.
Y/N blinked, looking up at him, a little startled.
Cooper was already looking down at her.
Close. Way closer than either of them expected.
“You good?” he asked, voice lower now, all that cocky edge gone.
“…I’m fine,” she said, but she didn’t move right away.
Neither did he.
From the sideline “OH MY GODDDDD-”
“COOP GOT GAME OFF THE COURT TOO?”
“Y/NNNNN-”
Delaney was practically screaming. Ashlon had her hands over her mouth, laughing. Toby was doubled over.
Caleb slapped Kon’s shoulder. “I told you!”
Kon was grinning like he’d just watched a movie. “That’s his wife.”
“RELAX,” Tyrese said, even though he was laughing just as hard.
Back in the moment, Y/N finally stepped back, clearing her throat slightly. “You run into all your defenders like that or…?”
Cooper rubbed the back of his neck, a little awkward again. “Only the ones who can actually guard me.”
That made her pause.
Then..just a small smile.
“Good,” she said, stepping back into her stance. “Then let’s go again.”
Something in Cooper lit up.
For the rest of the scrimmage, it was different until it was over.
“and then when you almost had him on that spin-”
“I DID have him,” Y/N cut in, not even looking up. “He just got lucky.”
“Mhmm,” Delaney teased. “If that’s what you wanna call it.”
Ashlon leaned closer, dropping her voice. “He’s been staring at you for like… ten minutes.”
Y/N paused mid-scroll.
“…Who?”
Ashlon didn’t even respond. She just tilted her head slightly.
Y/N followed the motion, and there he was.
Cooper stood near the baseline with Kon and Caleb but he wasn’t really listening to them. His arms were crossed, and the second their eyes met
He looked away.
Too fast.
Delaney caught it instantly. “Oh my God,” she whispered, grabbing Y/N’s arm. “He’s nervous.”
“He’s not nervous,” Y/N muttered, but there was the faintest hint of a smile pulling at her lips.
“Go talk to her,” Caleb was saying on the other side, practically shoving Cooper forward.
“I’m not..bro, chill,” Cooper mumbled, trying to hold his ground.
Kon grinned. “You just dropped twenty in a scrimmage but you scared to ask for a number?”
“I’m not scared.”
“Then go.”
Cooper exhaled, dragging a hand over his hair. “Y’all are so annoying.”
“Go,” Kon repeated.
And this time he did.
Y/N noticed him walking over before he even fully committed, her posture straightening just a little. Ashlon and Delaney immediately went quiet, watching like it was live entertainment.
Cooper stopped a step in front of her, rocking back slightly on his heels.
For a second, neither of them said anything.
Up close, he looked… different. Still confident, still that same edge, but there was something softer underneath it now. A little unsure.
“Uh,” he started, then paused, clearing his throat. “You played good.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow. “That it?”
He huffed a quiet laugh, glancing down for a second before meeting her eyes again. “I mean..I knew you were good, but… you was actually making me work.”
“Was?” she shot back immediately. “You say that like I’m not still here.”
That made him smile.
For real this time.
“Aight,” he said, nodding. “You are making me work.”
Ashlon made a muffled noise behind her, like she was physically restraining herself from reacting.
Cooper shifted his weight again, rubbing the back of his neck, just for a second before that familiar confidence slipped back in.
“So,” he said, a little smoother now, “you got Instagram?”
Y/N tilted her head slightly. “You asking for my Instagram?”
“And your number,” he added quickly, like he wasn’t about to let that part slide. “Both.”
Delaney’s eyes went wide. Toby straight up turned away so she wouldn’t laugh in his face.
Y/N took a second, just enough to make him wait, then unlocked her phone and held it out.
“Type it in.”
Cooper took it, fingers brushing hers for a split second longer than necessary before he looked down, typing. His focus was intense for something so simple, like he didn’t want to mess it up.
When he handed it back, he nodded toward her screen. “Followed you too.”
She checked, seeing his name pop up, smirk forming. “You move fast.”
He shrugged lightly. “On and off the court.”
“Okay,” she said, laughing under her breath. “I see.”
For a second, it settled again, that quiet, charged pause from earlier.
Then he stepped back.
“I’ma text you,” he said.
“You better,” she replied.
And just like that, he was gone as he was walking back toward his teammates, who immediately swarmed him.
“DID YOU GET IT?”
“Lemme see-”
“Bro-”
Y/N shook her head, smiling to herself as Ashlon leaned all the way into her shoulder.
“Relax,” Y/N said, but she couldn’t hide the grin now.
Later that night, her phone lit up.
Unknown number.
you up?
Y/N stared at it for half a second before typing back.
depends. who is this?
The reply came instantly.
don’t do that. you know who it is
She smiled.
maybe. what do you want?
Three dots.
facetime me
Y/N blinked, letting out a small laugh.
“Bold,” she murmured to herself.
But she clicked it anyway.
The screen rang once.
Twice.
He answered.
Cooper appeared on her screen, laying back against his pillows, hoodie on, hair slightly messy like he’d just gotten out the shower.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Then he grinned.
“Hey.”
“Hey,” she replied, softer now.
“You really was clamping me earlier,” he said, shaking his head a little.
She scoffed. “Was?”
He laughed quietly. “Here you go again.”
“You started it.”
“Nah,” he said, adjusting his phone slightly. “You just don’t let stuff go.”
“Why would I?”
He paused, looking at her through the screen for a second longer than necessary.
“..I don’t know,” he said. “I kinda like it though.”
That caught her off guard just enough to make her look away for a second, smiling.
The conversation flowed easier after that.
Talking about basketball turned into talking about classes, then random stories, then teasing each other again. Cooper was still a little awkward sometimes, pausing before he spoke, stumbling over words every now and then, but every time he did, he’d recover with something smooth enough to make up for it.
At one point, he leaned closer to the camera, squinting slightly.
“You always laugh like that?”
“Like what?” she asked.
“Like you trying not to,” he said. “But you still do.”
She covered her mouth instinctively, eyes narrowing. “You’re annoying.”
“And you smiling right now.”
“I’m not-”
“You are.”
She dropped her hand, laughing for real this time. “Oh my God.”
He grinned, clearly proud of himself.
“There it is,” he said. “That’s what I was waiting for.”
“Waiting for what?”
“To make you laugh,” he said simply.
That made her pause.
Just for a second.
Because he wasn’t joking when he said it.
And for all the cockiness, all the confidence he carried on the court but for right now, he just looked genuine.
Y/N shook her head slightly, smiling again, softer this time.
“You’re something else,” she said.
Cooper leaned back into his pillow, still looking at her through the screen.
“Yeah,” he murmured. “But you like it.”
She didn’t answer that.
By October, Durham had started to soften.
The air was cooler, the trees around campus just beginning to turn, and everything felt slower in that early fall way, like the city itself was easing into something new. For Cooper, though, nothing about the last few weeks had been slow.
Not when it came to her.
It had started with texts. Then Facetimes. Then late-night conversations that stretched into early mornings. Walks after practice. Sitting together in near empty gyms. Little moments that weren’t officially anything, but also weren’t nothing.
And Cooper, for maybe the first time, didn’t want to keep it in that gray area.
So he planned something.
That’s how they ended up downtown at Counting House on a late Sunday morning.
“Brunch?” Y/N had said when he picked her up, one eyebrow raised as she slid into the passenger seat.
“Yeah,” he shrugged, trying to play it off like it wasn’t a whole thing. “You got a problem with brunch?”
She smirked, settling into the seat. “No, I just didn’t think you were… brunch type.”
“I’m versatile,” he shot back.
“Okay,” she laughed. “We’ll see.”
But when they walked in, she noticed.
The way he held the door for her. The way he’d already made a reservation. The quick glance he gave her when they were seated, like he was checking if she liked it.
It was… sweet.
And she didn’t say it out loud, but it showed in the way she smiled a little softer than usual.
They sat across from each other by the window, sunlight spilling across the table between them. The city moved outside, people walking, cars passing but inside, it felt quieter. More contained.
“You clean up nice,” Y/N said casually, eyeing him over the menu.
Cooper looked up, caught off guard for half a second. “I always look good.”
“Mm,” she hummed. “Debatable.”
He leaned back slightly, studying her. “You been talking crazy lately.”
“Or maybe I’ve just been right lately.”
That made him laugh, shaking his head as he looked down at the menu again, but there was something else there too. Something softer. Familiar now.
They ordered. Talked. Laughed.
It wasn’t rushed.
That was the thing about it, it felt easy.
They joked about practice, about teammates, about how Kon had been trying (and failing) to cook the other night. Y/N told a story about Ashlon nearly missing class because she overslept. Cooper admitted quietly that he’d rewatched clips from their scrimmage more than once.
“You watched film on me?” she asked, eyebrows raised.
He shrugged, not even denying it. “Had to see what I’m dealing with.”
“And?”
He met her eyes, a small smirk forming. “You tough.”
She smiled at that.
And for a moment, everything settled.
Cooper leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on the table now. His fingers tapped lightly against his glass, nervous energy he couldn’t fully hide.
This was it.
He’d been thinking about it all morning. All week, really.
“I was thinking-” he started.
And then..
“OH MY GOD.”
Y/N froze.
Cooper closed his eyes for a split second.
Because he knew that voice.
“Y/N???”
She turned her head slowly, and there they were.
Delaney Thomas, Toby Fournier, and Ashlon Jackson standing right at the entrance, staring like they’d just spotted something unbelievable.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Y/N muttered under her breath.
Too late.
They were already walking over.
“Wow,” Delaney said, dragging the word out as she looked between them. “So this is what we’re doing now?”
Ashlon slid into the empty space beside Y/N like she belonged there. “A brunch date???”
“It’s not a-” Cooper started.
“IT IS,” Toby cut in, grinning as she pulled up a chair without asking.
Cooper leaned back in his seat, exhaling slowly as he dragged a hand down his face.
Y/N looked at him, trying not to laugh. “Your face…”
“I’m about to leave,” he muttered.
“You cannot leave,” Ashlon said immediately. “We just got here.”
He dropped his head back slightly, staring at the ceiling.
“No way,” he murmured.
Because of course Caleb, Tyrese and Kon had just walked in.
And now they were staring too.
Kon was the first to react, breaking into a huge grin. “Oh, this is crazy.”
Caleb clutched his chest. “Brunch date?? Coop???”
Tyrese just shook his head, laughing as they approached. “He’s gone.”
“Y’all cannot be serious,” Cooper said, sitting up now, irritation mixing with disbelief.
“Move,” Kon said, already pulling up another chair. “We sitting.”
“No, you’re not-”
Too late.
Within seconds, the quiet little table had turned into chaos. Chairs scraping. Voices overlapping. Everyone talking at once.
Y/N had her head down, laughing into her hand.
Cooper looked at her, completely defeated. “This is not funny.”
“It’s a little funny,” she admitted.
“I had this planned,” he said, low enough that only she could hear.
That made her look at him.
Really look this time.
And she saw it, The slight frustration. The nerves that hadn’t fully gone away. The way his fingers were still tapping against the table like earlier.
“Oh,” she said softly.
But before she could say anything else..
“Coop,” Caleb called out, grinning. “You was about to ask her something?”
“NO,” Cooper snapped immediately.
“ASK ME WHAT?” Delaney leaned in, nosy as ever.
“Nothing,” he said, jaw tight but eyes flicking back to Y/N.
Kon wasn’t letting it go. “Nah, he definitely was-”
“Kon,” Cooper warned.
But it was too late. The moment had already slipped.
The table was loud now. Messy. Full of interruptions and jokes and side conversations.
And the thing Cooper had been building up to was gone as he leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly, trying not to look as annoyed as he felt.
Across from him, Y/N watched him for a second.
Then, under the table, she nudged his foot with hers.
Light. Subtle.
He glanced up.
She didn’t say anything.
Just gave him a small, knowing smile.
Not dismissing it.
Not ignoring it.
Just…
Later.
And somehow, that was enough to make the tension in his shoulders ease just a little.
That night, the energy from brunch hadn’t really faded, it had just… shifted.
Y/N was sprawled across her bed, one leg bent, scrolling mindlessly through her phone while the TV played something she wasn’t paying attention to. Every now and then, she’d pause on a photo or a video, but her mind kept drifting back to earlier.
To him.
To the way his face had fallen for a split second when everything got interrupted.
To the way he’d leaned in like he was about to say something that actually mattered.
Her phone buzzed.
She didn’t even have to look at the name to know.
you busy?
She smirked a little, thumbs moving slow on purpose.
depends. what do you want?
The reply came quicker this time.
come over
She blinked once.
Then sat up slightly, rereading it like maybe she missed something.
pardon me?
On the other side of campus, Cooper was laying back against his pillows, one arm behind his head, phone resting on his chest as he stared at the screen. There was no hesitation in him now, none of that awkward pause from a few weeks ago.
Now?
He knew her.
Knew how she talked. How she teased. How she moved.
And he liked it.
A lot.
His lips twitched before he typed back.
you heard me
Y/N let out a quiet laugh, shaking her head.
you always this bold?
He responded instantly.
only with you
She stared at that for a second longer than she expected to.
send your location
Ten minutes later, she was standing outside his door.
And for the first time since all of this started she hesitated.
Not because she didn’t want to be there.
But because she knew exactly what this felt like.
Different.
Before she could overthink it, the door opened.
Cooper stood there in a hoodie and sweats, hair slightly messy, like he’d run his hands through it one too many times. But the second he saw her that same look crossed his face again.
That quiet, softened version of him that only showed up around her.
“You took long,” he said, leaning against the doorframe like he hadn’t been checking his phone every thirty seconds.
“I live across campus,” she replied, stepping inside. “Relax.”
He shut the door behind her, the click echoing just a little too loud in the quiet apartment.
For a second, neither of them moved.
Then she glanced around. “This where you be?”
“Yeah,” he said, watching her instead of answering properly.
She caught that.
“Why you looking at me like that?” she asked, turning back to him.
“Like what?”
“Like you plotting.”
He huffed a small laugh, stepping a little closer. “Maybe I am.”
There it was again.
That shift.
Not the shy version from before.
Something more… sure.
Y/N crossed her arms loosely, tilting her head. “You invited me over just to stare at me?”
“Nah,” he said, voice lower now. “I had a reason.”
“Oh yeah?” she challenged. “What’s that?”
He didn’t answer right away.
Just stepped closer.
Close enough now that she had to tilt her chin up slightly to keep eye contact.
And for once she didn’t immediately have something to say.
“…Have you ever had a kiss before?” she asked suddenly, like she needed to break the tension before it swallowed her whole.
Cooper blinked, caught off guard, but only for a second.
“Yeah,” he said. “But it didn’t mean anything.”
Her expression shifted just slightly at that.
Not jealous.
Not upset.
Just… taking it in.
Then she nodded once.
“Okay.”
And that was all she said.
No teasing.
No joke.
Just okay.
For a second, Cooper studied her face, like he was trying to read something deeper in it. Then his hand lifted, hesitant at first, fingers brushing lightly against her jaw, thumb just under her chin.
Giving her time to pull away.
She didn’t.
So he leaned in.
Slow at first.
Careful.
Like he wasn’t trying to mess it up.
And when his lips met hers it wasn’t rushed.
Wasn’t messy.
Just… intentional.
Soft, but sure.
Like he meant exactly what he said.
That this one was different.
Y/N’s hand came up instinctively, gripping lightly at the front of his hoodie, steadying herself more than anything.
And for a second, everything else disappeared.
No teammates.
No noise.
No jokes.
Just them.
When he pulled back, it wasn’t far.
Forehead almost touching hers, breath still warm between them.
He let out a quiet exhale, like he’d been holding it.
“Yeah,” he murmured, more to himself than anything.
Y/N looked at him, lips parting slightly like she was about to say something, but instead, she just smiled.
boyfriend!aj who . . . always, always texts you when he gets back to his place after practice even if it’s past midnight and he knows you’re asleep. he’ll still send a quiet “home, call you in the morning 🤍” because he hates the idea of you ever wondering where he is
boyfriend!aj who . . . insists on carrying literally everything for you. your tote bag, your huge ass stanley, the jacket you swore you didn’t need and when you try to grab something back he just gives you that look and shifts it to his other hand like no girl, its my JOB
boyfriend!aj who . . . has this very specific habit of pulling you into him by your hoodie strings or the waistband of your sweats, never anything dramatic, just a small tug until you’re standing between his arms or legs, like that’s where you were supposed to be anyway
boyfriend!aj who . . . loves quiet car rides with you more than anything, one hand on the wheel, the other resting on your thigh, not even talking much, just occasionally squeezing your leg or tapping his fingers to whatever song is playing
boyfriend!aj who . . . gets a little shy when you compliment him, like he’ll laugh it off or shake his head but you can see it in the way his ears go a little red and how he suddenly has to look anywhere but directly at you
boyfriend!aj who . . . subconsciously mirrors you. like if you cross your legs, a second later he does too, or if you start speaking softer, his voice drops to match yours without him even realizing it
boyfriend!aj who . . . has a specific laugh that only comes out with you, like a full, unfiltered one, head tipping back, hand covering his mouth a little, and every time it happens you realize not everyone gets to see that side of him

author’s note ⟡ i def have more if anyone wants a part two, but i wanted to post something simple + not proofread
Luke who loves hearing you call him by his middle name.
He’s not completely sold on pet names on you calling him pet names. All in all he prefers just being called Luke. He’s fine with ‘baby’ or ‘honey,’ but later on in your relationship you realize he likes being called August. It was a joke at first, you were just playing around and it came out. It caught him by surprise, really. They way it came so naturally to you, the way it sounded like honey coming off your tongue. He would try to get you to call him the name more subtly. It was until you flat out asked him about it that he finally admitted it. He just likes the intimacy of it and how it sounds coming from you.
Luke who loves calling you every pet name there is.
On the complete flip side, he sometimes rarely calls you by your actual name. Like he could go days only calling you ‘sweetheart’ when he talks to you. It's always by accident, he doesn’t even notice when he’s doing it. It’s just one of his favorite things to call you and you can’t say that you’re complaining.
Luke who clings to you during bedtime.
Luke isn’t the biggest cuddler. He loves being close to all the time, but that doesn’t necessarily mean touching. He doesn’t have a problem with physical touch, he just doesn’t require it to get through his day. When it’s nighttime though, and you’re both settling down in bed, Luke always gravitates toward you. He loves laying his head on your chest to hear your heartbeat, your fingers playing with his hair and scratching his scalp. Some nights he’s even the little spoon, which isn’t often, only when he’s had a long day but he adores that time with you. The quiet and comfort is that fix of physical touch he occasionally misses throughout the day.
Luke who is proactive with your needs.
He’s been called the smartest linebacker in the league for a reason, and that transfers over to his relationship with you. He is always attentive to what you may need, even if you don’t openly say it or show it. If you start running out of your skincare products, he’ll go to the store himself to get you more. If your car needs gas or an oil change, he’ll take it and get it fixed for you. Even if it’s something as simple as not liking your food at a restaurant, he will be the one to order you something else or the two of you will switch meals, even if he doesn’t like what you ordered.
Luke who can be a little overbearing.
It’s never on purpose and he means no harm. Just with his retirement and the fact that he’s still living in Charlotte, he gets recognized more often than not. He usually doesn’t mind it, actually. He’s fine with taking photos and having conversations, but he tries not to take on that attention when he’s out with you. He deliberately wants to keep you out of the spotlight and the public eye just because he knows how people can get. Whenever someone asks him for a photo when he’s out with you he politely declines and since he’s loved in the city, people understand.
Luke who hates texting and only calls.
He is definitely one of those people that hates texting. He finds it so impersonal and when he texts he wants a direct answer quickly, so calling is just the easiest. Hearing your voice is always a plus as well. Luke calls over the most mundane things. He could be asking you about how old the strawberries you bought were and he will call you. He’s also not above calling multiple times until you answer. You joke about how annoying he can be, but you both know that you love his antics. He always seems to call at the right time too, almost like he knows when you’re thinking about him.
Luke who does not and will never argue.
Disagreeing is perfectly fine in his book, but arguing is where he draws the line. If he finds you two getting to the point where you're just talking over each other without listening, he stops. He lets you get out all of your emotions, however mean they may be and no matter how much he disagrees, he stays silent. You more than likely come to your senses and realize how impractical you’re being (not wrong, just impractical) and that’s when he starts. He doesn’t deflect or undermine you, he understands. He also never raises his voice, just because he doesn’t need to. You two aren’t children and he knows that raising his voice wouldn’t fly with you and he was raised better than that.

summary ⟡ luke’s players have decide that his wife is more interesting
author’s note ⟡ this is definitely not proofread, trying to characterize middle schoolers took years off my life but we ball. and thanks to @v6quewrlds for indirectly getting me to write this
Luke had been coaching middle school football with some old teammates for about two years now. He was their defensive coordinator and was able to build a good rapport with the kids. It helps when you’re also a football legend.
The kids adored Luke. When you would pop in at practices you could see the way they hung on to his every word, desperate to get better. But some of the team adored someone else more.
It was all innocent and fun, just a middle school crush, even if that. When your husband would get home from work he would tell you about how some of the boys asked about you. It always made you laugh. It was sweet and you knew that they just wanted to tease their coach.
For the past few days your car is in the shop and it had been for almost a week. It was slightly difficult living your and Luke’s drastically different schedules with one car, but you managed. Some days you would take your husband to work and pick him up when you had something else to do. He insisted that you have the only working car in the house and who were you to argue with Luke Kuechly?
Today was no different. You kissed your husband goodbye and went on your way.
Practice went smoothly. The smoothest it had gone in awhile. Something new seemed to click for the boys and it made the entire coaching staff proud. Two boys in particular, a safety and a defensive end, got called out to take a moment on the bench. They were in earshot of Luke and called him over.
“Hey Coach Kuechly!” the safety, Anthony, called out with his hands creating a tunnel to be heard, before waving him over.
Luke doubled back before ultimately walking over. “What’s up guys? Looking good out there?”
The boys looked at each other before starting again, “Where’s your wife?” the defensive end, Caden, asked while taking a sip of water.
“She’s with her mom…why?”
“How long have you guys been married?” Caden asked again before Anthony shoved his shoulder, murmuring something.
Luke laughed while crossing his arms, looking at the field then back to the boys, “Six years,” he answered plainly.
“That’s lame. She got any sisters?”
“Not any for you bud,” was the last thing Luke said before walking back to the field, shaking his head at their comments.

Practice was almost over by the time you showed up. Some last minute routes were being run when you walked into the track next to the field, leaning against the fence. You loved seeing your husband in his element. Luke was watching attentively, calling out the occasional correction as boys made their way to huddle.
There was a quick speech before everyone was dismissed. You walked up slowly to Luke before one of the younger boys waved at you. You waved back before Luke turned around and walked to meet you.
“Hi, baby.” His smile grew softer and you wrapped your arm around his bicep. You said a small ‘hi’ back before a choir of children came over.
A few ‘hi Mrs. Kuechly’s’ and a few quick glances, but of course, two boys needed to make sure they were seen.
“Are you coming to our next game?” Anthony asked. Luke didn’t miss how his tone slightly changed when he spoke to you.
You laughed, more like a puff of air from your nose, “I think I’ll be able to make it. Gotta go undefeated, right?”
“Yes ma’am,” an almost unnoticeable accent covered his words.
Caden wasn’t far behind, he came up on the side of Anthony, bumping into him slightly. “You look very pretty today, Mrs. Kuechly.” He was much bolder, especially for an eighth grader.
His attempt wasn’t lost on you though, “Thank you, but Caden?”
“Yes ma’am?”
“Go find your mom.” You nodded into the direction of his parents as the words left your mouth. His head immediately bowed, another whispered ‘yes ma’am’ and he and Anthony were on their way.
The field was almost completely clear, most of the boys already on their way home. Luke grabbed you by your waist, moving so you two now faced each other.
“I swear these kids are gonna be the death of me. I mean I’m their coach and they like you better.”
You let out an actual laugh, bringing your hand up to rub the side of his neck, “Of for sure, but at least they’re funny.”
His eyes flickered from gazing into your own and down to your lips. “He wasn’t lying. You do look incredible, sweetheart.” His lazy smile was on display. He moved to grab your hand, bringing it up to his mouth and kissing your knuckles.
You could feel your cheeks getting hot just from the way he looked at you. “You love me so much don’t you?”
“I’d marry you again every year just so you don’t forget it.”
