Something has changed. Something is different than before. For so long I've shrunk from adversity. When things got tough, and I had to endure...I gave up. And then I saw Frozen. All of this about being sheltered, being alone...and then breaking free, knowing love, letting people in. It just clicked for me. My former record for holding push up position was 6 minutes on a padded floor. This week? I shattered it with 7 minutes...on my knuckles...on concrete. There are two things I've learned emotionally this week that I need to remember, that I need seared in my brain: One: Those people who hurt me, who made me feel weird and weak and inadequate...they were coming from their own place of pain. They had no idea what they were doing, or to whom, and they didn't care. They just needed anything that could make it stop, if only for a second. And two? They're no longer here. I've cut them out of my life. They're no longer relevant to me. They have no input. And when I stop acting like the opinions they had are true? I pull this kind of shit. I defy everything they ever said about me. It's time to let it go.
This reminds me of a philosophy within Systema. Everyone is so afraid of weapons, so convinced that anyone holding one controls the situation, has the most power. But in Systema, we make the martial artist the weapon. Then everything else just becomes tools - extensions. And tools can be taken away, dismantled. But if YOU'RE a weapon...that can't be taken away.
When I'm feeling depressed, I go hold push-up position on my knuckles on concrete for a few minutes. Perks me right up!

Self-knowledge is no guarantee of happiness, but it is on the side of happiness and can supply the courage to fight for it.

We worked on fighting with one arm last night. My instructor's logic was, "Maybe you got blind-sided, and he cut your arm. Maybe your girlfriend is clinging to your arm so tight it's all you have. Or maybe you're in the middle of the fight of your life, and you think, 'Fuck it, I'm gonna take this bastard down while takin some selfies.' Fuck, I don't know."

Systema in a nutshell.
I mess up a lot. I say the wrong thing, I do the wrong thing, I donāt do the right thing, etc. But, when I do, I have a tendency to wallow in self-anger and self-pity. āDamn it, why canāt I just do x?! What is wrong with me?!ā And thatās even worse.
I never understood that this was a problem, and how to fix it, until Systema. When we do drills to defend against the blade, I get stabbed with the training knives. A lot. But, when I do, I have a choice - give up, or keep moving, keep breathing. Because if someoneās coming at me with a real knife, I have the same choice - be the victim, or resolve to make my attacker the victim, no matter how disadvantaged I become in the fight.
Itās the same here. I mess up. I donāt wallow in guilt. I know Iāll probably mess up again. Thatās ok. I keep moving, keep breathing, keep working to fix my behavior. āEver tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.ā

SYSTEMA KOREAHQ - SSAT & SWAT SEMINAR
The New Madrid fault causes a massive earthquake that devastates the Midwest. The media is calling it āKatrina 2.0ā. Water sources are tainted, food is scarce, and no aid is likely for weeks. There are rumors of a group in St. Louis that have turned to cannibalism to survive. I have nothing but my wife, my knives, and my Spetznaz shovel. I have to get us out of the city. How do I do it? Iāll tell you in a few weeksā¦

Paranoia vs. Being Aware
Growing up, my dad was always telling me to stay alert. Always on guard. Attacks can come from any where, at any time, using anything. I always assumed this was because he was a) psychologically and physically abused as a child, and b) a cop earlier in life. However, now that I'm in Systema, many of the same concepts are being advocated.
So what's the difference?
Training and perspective. If your martial art is based on fear, aggression, and tension, and you are trained to constantly be on the look out, then...well, yeah, stands to reason your psyche will be damaged over time. And you can feel the tension in someone who's like this - they are often excluded from social circles outside of their specific combat niche. They often come across as intense and curt. This is because such emotions prevent the mind from functioning properly. Limited by tension, the mind can only process finite stimuli. Since this intensity demands utmost attention, violence soon becomes all the practitioner knows.
If, however, you train under duress (exposing yourself to the things that make you feel tension) but concentrate on relaxing, breathing, and paying attention to your partner/opponent and to yourself, the state of mind one eventually attains is altogether different. Not limited by constantly being on the verge of the "fight or flight" response, awareness takes on a relaxed focus. One becomes more in-tune with sensing body language*. And, since it comes from a relaxed state, people from all walks of life will not be put on edge (although they might be if you start talking about your training lol).
So, was my dad right?...Yes and no. Like I said...all about training and perspective.
*A very interesting article going in-depth on the neurology of sensing tension in another person here.

Pay attention. Train realistically. Train honestly. Stay alive
