His breath catches, the disbelief on his face promptly giving away to anger, bordering on fury. “What-- ...No...” A nervous sweat breaks on his forehead almost instantly, hands clenching to stop from shaking. He isn’t afraid, it isn’t corporeal, it can’t hurt him. Right? No, fear isn’t the cause of his physical symptoms. He already built a marker, already destroyed two, and they just won’t leave him alone. What’s his connection to them now anyway, he should just be some other person to them, shouldn’t he?
“What the hell do you want? Why are you here?”

“Hey, how’s bout you stop bein’ an asshole and pay attention. I’m just tryin’ to enjoy my fuckin’ beer in peace save your moronic mistake earlier.”
“Why don’t we just-- forget. About the whole cliff thing, and drink. Okay? We can be dicks to each other when we’re sober. Sound good?”
❝ – Up there, ❞ she starts, motioning vaguely upwards, ❝ if a single thing is wrong, just one number off, it’s instant death. Up there, we are completely powerless, completely at the mercy of infinite space – we don’t know what’s even out there. ❞ She doesn’t particularly blame him; space exploration has its perks, and it’s an interesting thing to study, but there’s so much unknown about it. The thought of not having control over the elements around her is terrifying.
❝ Down here, we know the risks, we can calculate what’s going to happen. And it’s not like this is my first rodeo, it’ll be fine. ❞
He laughs, maybe they don’t know what’s out there up in space, but how bad could it be? It’s not like there’s other life anywhere nearby. Is there other life somewhere? Sure, with the infinite expanse of space there’s got to be. Is it anywhere that someone would be able to encounter it within their lifetime? Almost definitely not. Nevertheless, realistically she does have a point.
“Yeah alright, fine. I’ll come along. But if I end up like that guy with his arm stuck in the rock you’re paying my medical bills.”
@huskbane
He looks up from his work, a simple patch-up job on some old hardware someone brought in, his visor adjusting automatically to accommodate the change in lighting. He’s sure he’s seen the woman before, but he can’t quite place her. His helmet segments and retracts into the rest of his rig, exposing his face to her.
“That’s some nice looking armor you’ve got there,” he says, gesturing towards her. “What brings you in here? Need something fixed?”

❝ – weren’t you the one that talked about going to space and exploring its vast, uncharted reaches? ❞ She questions, brow furrowed at his apparent distaste for something other than the mundane. ❝ How is that any different than what I’m asking of you, Issac? Aside from the fact that this is a hell of a lot less dangerous? ❞
“You really think space is that much more dangerous than wandering around canyons or whatever? Up there if you’ve got oxygen and a pressurized environment you’re pretty safe,” he rationalizes. Maybe it’s just that he likes the idea of space a lot more than anywhere he could venture on earth. “Down here there’s all sorts of things that could kill you.”
@napsoldier
“The hell is the military doing here? Since when has this installation been that important?”
@fcrtuneboy
“Look man, I just wanna drink in peace, can you bother me about the cliff incident some other time?”
@theonlyfisher
“Look Elena, I fix things. You bring in a broken appliance? I’ll get it working. Bring in a truck, I’ll figure out what’s wrong. Hell you can bring in an illegal weapon for all I care and I’ll patch it up for you. But you bring in some crazy adventure plan? No. Count me out. I’m not an adventurer.”
small-ish starter call :0

The throat is deep and the mouth is wide, saw some things on the other side. Made me promise to never tell, but you know me, I can’t help myself. Now I’ve got something you have to see, they put S O M E T H I N G inside of me. The smile is red and its eyes are black, I don’t think I’ll be coming back. I don’t believe it, I had to see it, I came back haunted. I said goodbye but I– I had to try. I came back haunted. Everywhere now, reminding me I’m not who I used to be. I’m afraid this has just begun, consequences for what I’ve done. Yeah.

"I did not.“ She’s sort of avoided touching any kinds of master-anythings just on virtue of what kind of visit she’s here on. "I also haven’t been in there for long, since I haven't needed to be.” Utavel’s almost irritated to have to repeat all this again, since it’s similar enough to what she’s been saying, if only slightly more specific. Although… she knows she ought to have checked it. Utavel is part of the problem, and out of something as frivolous as laziness.
She’s projecting problems elsewhere, but she doesn't care. It’s not her ship to maintain. Utavel relaxes somewhat in her spot as she watches the engineer for a few more moments, mulling over whether or not to go with him and watch him perform the repair. While she has a lazy streak, Utavel’s not one to pass up and opportunity to watch a practical science at work. “I can take you to it, however. If you need guidance so badly, that is.” If he doesn’t need any help around the wing, she’d have to come up with another excuse for which to chaperone him.
“I hope you don’t mind,” he says, making his way past her to hit the big red “emergency gas cutoff” button on the wall. “If it’s not a pass-through line this’ll at least make the operation rooms habitable regardless of what needs fixing. In the future you should always hit the cutoff if there’s a gas leak.” He’d thought most scientists would’ve known that, but maybe that’s just his human education talking. She might not have learned the same things he did.
“If you could, yeah. The dumbass on the comms didn’t tell me what the problem was, let alone which part of the lab it’s in.” He rolls his shoulders underneath the bulk of his engineering gear. He’s not technically a maintenance worker, someone who fixes small-time problems like this, but then again he wouldn’t have been called if there was someone else available. Or so he’d like to think. In all reality it was probably because anyone who wasn’t qualified to build a goddamn spaceship had somehow managed to screw the job up, and so they’d decided to send in the big guns.
