“The concept of incorporating small shrines into the walls of Ghorman was something we proposed to Luke early on, before the walls were even built. We designed charming tile murals, all hand-drawn, featuring little poems, messages, and symbols like spiders and the fruits of Ghorman. Across Italy and other countries, you can find small votive shrines embedded in walls—often a mystery to tourists, but something deeply familiar and meaningful to locals. We wanted to bring that same essence to Ghorman, imagining these shrines placed at street corners or tucked in alleys. We carefully studied references from shrines around the world, spanning different time periods and cultures, to create a set of shrines that felt distinctively Ghorman. We hand-drew decorative motifs and symbols with intricate borders, and, like much of the work from the graphics team, these details may go unnoticed by some, blending into the background as subtle textures. But for us, it was about adding richness and depth to the streetscape. The set design team further enhanced the shrines with plants, trinkets, and candles to give them an authentic, lived-in shrine feel.
