They both come from a place of lack, a desire to be seen and be recognized. And the first time that happens in Syril's life is when he meets Dedra, and goes, all the conflicting feelings I've been feeling my entire life, the place that I came from, not having any self worth, is completely crystalized in seeing Dedra, and going oh my gosh, there's another person like me. And she looks amazing doing it.

Analysis when Karn heard 'who are you'.
Do you think he will still shoot Cassian if Rylanz haven't shot him first?
Thank you.
Hi, and thank you for the ask.
No, I don’t think he would have shot Cassian; furthermore, you can see him lowering the blaster just before he gets shot by Rylanz.
I don’t think this is because he’s feeling merciful or wants to join the rebellion, or even that he has much coherent thought about what he’s doing at all. Instead, I think he’s been drained of energy, purpose and in some sense his own identity and it almost feels like he just hasn’t got the strength to hold the blaster up anymore. Everything has just come crashing down for him. Syril’s entire belief system, already dealt a terrible blow by what he sees as Dedra’s betrayal, has been annihilated by three simple words from the man he has been obsessed with all these years.
If he had not been shot by Rylanz I think he would’ve done what actor Kyle Soller suggests: “ just wander off”. Maybe eventually he would find some kind of new purpose but I kind of think that he’s spiritually killed by this moment… a few seconds before he’s physically killed. Perhaps he would have shot Cassian if he had tried to continue the fight, but Cass was completely at his mercy and clearly thought this mad stranger was about to kill him. He seemed utterly bewildered and I think that made Syril even more enervated.
The axe forgets but the tree remembers. Cassian forgot Syril almost immediately. Syril studied his image regularly and soon made the hunt for his arch-nemesis his life‘s mission and the centrepiece of his imagined heroic work for the Empire. All his anger at being exploited by Dedra and his horrified realisation that he has been part of a system that has organised a genocide concentrates onto Cassian when he sees him. But when Cassian says “Who are you ?” the anger evaporates as the full scale of his self-deception hits.
I like that he unknowingly and unintentionally saves Dedra thanks to his frenzied attack. A year later, the significance of her survival becomes apparent and I like to imagine that losing Syril is what drove her own manic obsession with finding Axis in that final year. Not that I believe that would have comforted poor Syril.
Happy Star Wars Day!! 🌟⚔️
