Can CBD oil be useful against viruses like Covid19?
Some work suggests that CBD oil may be beneficial for certain viral diseases, but more studies are still needed.
The cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the major cannabinoids present in cannabis or hemp (Cannabis sativa) and no psychotropic effects and addictive potential.
Although some information has been viralized that ensures that this cannabiodie could be useful against the coronavirus, the truth is that there is no solid research in progress on the effect of CBD on the Covid-19 coronavirus. Where does this rumor come from then?
CBD AND COVID-19: AN UNPROVEN RELATIONSHIP
There is currently a CBD-based medication, Epidiolex , to treat seizures associated with two rare types of epilepsy. There are no other officially approved therapeutic indications.
Apart from this pharmacological use, CBD is in Europe in a very confusing legal situation. In many countries of the Union CBD is approved as a food supplement.
10 medicinal uses of CBD hemp oil
A regulation by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) is expected to clarify the situation in the coming months.
Meanwhile, CBD products can be purchased on internet sites, to which they attribute a long list of properties, including their efficacy against Covid19. For this reason, researchers from the University of Imbrusia (Italy) and the Imperial College London (United Kingdom) have decided to review the available scientific literature and the claims of specialized websites to assess the current state of knowledge regarding the use of CBD in viral diseases.
CBD CAN BE INTERESTING FOR ITS ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES
Researchers have found scientific studies supporting the use of CBD for the treatment of diseases of viral origin such as hepatitis C and multiple sclerosis (the viral origin of this disease is currently a hypothesis).
However, they add that the results are encouraging but preliminary and that many new studies are needed before CBD hits the market as a treatment for viral diseases.
Other studies suggest that CBD does not have a direct antiviral effect, but that its recognized anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties may be useful in the treatment of viral infections such as oral and genital herpes and herpes zoster and, even, Ebola.
A study on the use of topical CBD oil is currently underway to determine its efficacy in inactivating Zika and West Nile viruses. But, as we have already said, there is no solid research in progress on the effect of CBD on the Covid-19 coronavirus.
THE PROVEN BENEFITS OF CBD
CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in the regulation of sleep, appetite, pain, and the immune response.
Studies have shown that CBD can help reduce chronic pain in patients with multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. It also mitigates anxiety and depression, reduces blood pressure.
Although CBD is a fairly safe substance, it is advisable that people who receive any medication consult their doctor before taking it. In some cases it can cause side effects like diarrhea, appetite changes, and fatigue.
Consultation with the doctor is also essential to obtain a correct diagnosis. In the event that you suspect that you may be infected with Covid19, you should immediately contact the health services.
As another week of quarantine is coming to an end, you might have realised that you are becoming more creative in the kitchen and trying those recipes you never had time for before.
If you love to bake and you enjoy CBD, it seems natural to want to combine the two. Full spectrum CBD oil‘s rich green flavour can add a robust note to your baking and cooking and, alternatively, adding CBD to foods and beverages can mask the taste for those who prefer a more neutral flavour.
Adding CBD oil to recipes is an easy and fun way to incorporate pure, natural CBD oil into your daily routine. Since CBD oil won’t get you high, you can feel free to experiment with adding it to your favourite recipes. Because there are no specific dosing guidelines for CBD, prepared CBD treats and snacks are often unclear as to how much CBD is contained in a single serving.
You might also find that baking can be relaxing and as per our last Symtomax post on the effectiveness of CBD on anxiety, you might just want to take this opportunity and combine the two.
Here’s what you need to know about baking with CBD.
1. When using CBD in baking, it’s vital to keep temperature in mind. While warming up your oil could increase the effectiveness of your CBD, high temperatures can destroy many of its active compounds. You want to ensure that you bake at temperatures no greater than 170 degrees Celsius. This ensures the terpenes (aromatic molecules that yield distinct types of highs )won’t burn off, leaving you with the most potent form of the cannabis possible. Baking CBD at temperatures above this for prolonged periods could cause the CBD added to your recipe to evaporate, essentially making your CBD baked goods lose their potency and ultimately their effectiveness.
2. CBD needs to be extracted into a fat if you’re going to bake with it. The simplest way to do this is by purchasing a full-spectrum CBD tincture with an oil base and dropping it into your recipe of choice. You can also try infusing CBD into butter or coconut oil, using an isolate in powder form.
3. What you need to know is that CBD will have a strong, earthy flavor. The best is to embrace the taste and pair it wisely. All types of chocolate work well, as do pepperminty, menthol aided flavors, like pine, peppermint and spearmint. If the earthy flavor isn’t for you, using an isolate is the way to go, as it is flavorless.
4. Serving Size - Let’s say you wanted to bake a batch of 24 cookies that each contained 25mg CBD. You would need to use 600mg of CBD oil in your recipe. If you want your CBD baked goods to get the job done, so to speak, make sure that your recipe contains enough CBD to fit the desired milligram content for each serving size.
5. Adequate storing of your CBD baked goods is paramount, ensuring they stay fresh and uphold their potency. CBD is extremely sensitive to light and heat and does best when stored in a cool, dark place like a pantry cupboard. Keep them in an airtight container in a spot that doesn’t see the light or get too hot, and your baked CBD goodies will stay fresh and maintain their quality.
6. You can incorporate CBD into any recipe but start off with something you know and feel comfortable with, like brownies or cookies. You can swap out the amount of regular butter in a recipe with CBD-infused butter if you’ve made your own.Once you’ve mastered those, get creative!
Medical Cannabis Network sent journalist Stephanie Price to see for herself the enormous scale of the project and the preparation processes that European medical cannabis companies in Portugal are required to meet at each stage of a project.
Stephanie, who spent a couple of days with the Symtomax team onsite in Beja, Portugal, to see and understand the complex processes necessary in applying for a medical cannabis cultivation license in Portugal and what the whole process entails. The scale of the site is in itself impressive, but speaking with the people involved gives you a real insight into the amount of work necessary before you even start to sow a seed.
Approval to start the implementation process for cultivation, as well as approval for an import and export licence in Portugal, was secured by Symtomax through Infarmed – the Portuguese Government agency accountable to the Health Ministry.
To gain approval from the Portuguese licensing authorities for agricultural sites, applicants have to comply with the Good Agricultural and Harvesting Practices guidelines. Some of these measures include implementing high-level security on site, informing of the expertise of staff members, an overview of tracing and tracking software, demonstrating plans of the cultivation site including agricultural fields, greenhouses, propagation rooms, and demonstrating quality control processes.
In preparation, Symtomax is now just weeks away from planting its first seeds. Security has been implemented, the greenhouses are ready to go up, and all plans for the water systems, propagation, cultivation and drying facilities have been put in place, and all documents are ready for inspection.
Experts at Symtomax include some of the most experienced cultivators in the industry, and the likes of Portugal’s former State Secretary of Health and Chairman of the Infarmed Board of Directors, Eurico Carlos Alves, currently a Professor of Surgery at the Integrated Master of Medicine of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, and David Mace, an ex GW pharmaceutical Audit Chairman.
Poised for a head start in the European cannabis market
Following in the footsteps of Canada, America and Australia, ever more European countries are adopting the use of CBD products, medical cannabis oils and cannabis flower. However, as infrastructure catches up with policy, numerous European countries are importing cannabis supplies from abroad, leaving space in in the market for a European supplier.
Currently, the European market for CBD is worth approximately €450m, which accounts for 31% of the global CBD oil market. To put things into perspective – Canada has a total of 326 hectares of licensed indoor and outdoor cultivation areas, with cannabis sales in Canada over 2020 expected to reach $2.8bn.
Symtomax’s production site is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal, famous for its agriculture and fertile soil and is home to miles of olive and cork farms. Now, cannabis is set to be added to list, with the Symtomax farm creating jobs for the local community. The size of the site is nearly a third of Canada’s total cultivation space – a total of 105 hectares, 95 of which are pre-approved for cultivation. This is enough space to produce up to 700,000 kilogrammes per year, positioning Symtomax to be one of the largest suppliers of medical cannabis in the European cannabis market.
Paul Segal said: “The key for us is very simple. We want to raise enough money that we become self-sufficient. What we are doing here is something that has been done many, many times before, however, we are doing this in a much more cost-effective way through outdoor cultivation. We are also lucky enough to have an on-site water supply that will save approximately €300,000 a year.
“We have watched the markets quite closely throughout Canada, America and Israel, and in some respects, it gave us the benchmark for creating the business that we have now. We watched the indoor market versus what was going on in the world, and we felt there was a better way for us to produce a low-cost product and bring it into the European market.”
Symtomax’s expertise in the field of cannabis cultivation
Symtomax has been putting in the groundwork for the past three years to ensure it is fully set to supply Europe with its medical cannabis product. Two expert cultivators have been enlisted who have over 35 years combined experience. Their deep knowledge and expertise of growing will help to produce the highest quality, outdoor, organic product.
Washington-born cultivator, Matthew Butters, will be bringing over ten years of experience to the field after spending a decade working with cultivation collectives and fine tuning his drying and curing techniques. Butters will be companion planting to help keep pests away from the crop, and emphasises his passion for the land’s ecology, leaving space for migration routes through the site.
CEO Olaf van Tulder has 25 years of industry experience that will be utilised. Van Tulder, former CEO of one of Europe’s most well-known cannabis companies, has won various awards for the creation of the most renowned strains in the history of cannabis.
Van Tulder said: “I’ve been in the recreational cannabis market for over 20 years, but I see the future of the market in Europe as being purely medical for the foreseeable future.
“Our site has 95 hectares of cultivation space with pre-authorised licences, and we will be starting in the greenhouses with 3000 square metres. We will do the propagation of the plants indoors and once they are ready, they will be planted outside of the facility. After drying they will be processed into extract, such as oils.”
Van Tulder emphasised the importance of the sun for the cultivation of medical cannabis as the sun improves the plant’s terpene profile.
He said: “When looking at outdoor versus indoor growing, it is better to grow outdoor for medical cannabis products. Indoor facilities are rarely profitable – it is very expensive to grow indoor because of the electricity and the rental cost of the facilities, which raises the cost of the product.
“At Symtomax we produce medical cannabis products. It is much better if the plant is grown outside because the natural sun gives the cannabis a more complex terpene profile – you cannot copy the sun.
“To have a profitable company you need quality land with a lot of sun to produce quality medical products.”
Symtomax looks at studies showing the effectiveness of treating Acne with CBD.
Symtomax in Portugal are developing the largest cultivation site in Europe. They are dedicated to the production, research, cultivation, processing and distribution of medicinal cannabis oil to pharmaceutical companies worldwide.
Symtomax combines innovative horticultural techniques with the expertise of award-winning growers that will produce unique organic GMP-certified medical cannabis oil for the healthcare industry.
One of the most promising studies on the effectiveness of treating acne with CBD was published in The Journal of Clinical InvestigationTrusted Source, which demonstrated CBD’s power in stopping the processes known to cause acne, such as excess oil buildup and it showed to have anti-inflammatory effects on oil-producing glands. More importantly, it also showed to have NO significant side effects. Which is huge, considering that the vast amount of patients that undergo acne treatments often suffer from very serious side effects.
Acne has and is currently being treated with Isotretinoin, which is an effective treatment for acne, but comes at a very high price, taking into consideration the very serious side effects that may come with the treatment. These side effects are listed below:
Dry skin and lips
Fragile (easily injured) skin, itching or rash.
Increased sensitivity to the sun (easily sunburned).
Peeling skin on your palms and soles.
Thinning hair.
Dry,red eyes (you may find that you can’t wear your contact lenses during treatment).
Nosebleeds.
Bleeding gums.
Pain in your muscles.
Vision problems such as decreased night vision.
A few people have even more serious side effects. If these problems aren’t treated, they could last even after you stop taking isotretinoin.
Headaches, nausea, vomiting, or blurred vision.
Depression or changes in your mood, such as feelings of sadness or irritability.
Unusual tiredness or lack of appetite.
Severe stomach pain, diarrhea, or bleeding from your rectum.
Very dry eyes.
A yellow color in your skin or eyes, and dark yellow urine.
You can’t take isotretinoin if you are pregnant or if there is any chance you might get pregnant while taking this treatment. I can cause the following severe birth defects:
Malformation of the head and face.
Intellectual disability.
Severe internal defects of the brain, heart, glands, and nervous system.
Can cause miscarriage, premature birth, or death of the fetus.
Considering these devastating side effects that may occur by using isotretinoin, it seems that the outcome does not compensate the risks the user might undergo.
CBD, considering the exceptional proof of its use for treating acne, does by far ,seem to be the most natural and safest method of treatment.
