often times when he’d come back home, fuma would find you in the living room of your shared apartment — a book in hand as you sat in perfect silence, allowing yourself to indulge in a moment of relaxation after spending all day trying your best to explain the new material to your students. each time, you’d smile up at him: hearing his steps in the hallway and the soft clinking of the door keys way before actually seeing him, heart pinging with excitement in the same exact way no matter how many times this situation has occurred. and each time, fuma would lay down right next to you — work shirt long discarded and replaced by one of the many pokemon t-shirts he had owned as you let your body rest against his softly, just the two of you existing in the perfect quietness of a life you were building together. 

but this night was different. 

fuma felt it since the moment he stepped through the door — that heavy, almost suffocating feeling hanging in the air, hitting him with a wave of uncertainty as he took his shoes off, almost as if he already knew something wasn’t quite right. he moved further inside, footsteps light and soft against the wooden floor, eyes already drifting towards the open area of the living room. 

you weren’t there. 

his brows furrowed in confusion, his expression laced with worry. something must’ve happened, he thought, to make the perfect routine you had each day break like this. whatever it was, though, he had only one objective in mind — helping his beloved fiancée feel better, a task which to him was almost as natural as breathing. 

his footsteps carried him towards one of the two bedrooms inside the apartment — specifically the one which you two had repurposed as a gaming room and office in one, a perfect combination for you to be exist with each other even when your responsibilities denied you the pleasure of doing the same thing. he opened the door slowly, not wanting it to creak, curious eyes looking inside through the now empty space and his gaze fixated on you almost immediately — a sight both crushing and endearing to fuma’s poor heart. 

you were sleeping so peacefully, eyes fluttered shut as you breathed through your nose, chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm, matching his own almost perfectly. fuma smiled for a second, but said smile died down pretty quick as he focused on the bigger picture — on the visible exhaustion on your face, the papers scattered all around your desk, the half finished cup of coffee on the edge of the wooden surface, a half checked test right under your head. only then did he realise just how many responsibilities you carried on your shoulders at this time of the year, how many things you had to deal with after coming home from work before actually allowing yourself to rest. 

he sighed quietly as he moved closer towards you, one arm sneaking under your knees while the other rested on your upper back, muscles flexing ever so slightly as he picked you up with practiced ease, his grip gentle but firm so as to make sure you wouldn’t fall from his arms. you leaned into his touch almost instantly, your involuntary action pulling a smile onto fuma’s lips — even in sleep you longed for him, recognised the familiar, comforting touch he provided you with. 

fuma felt you move slightly in his arms, footsteps carrying the two of you towards the living room. you hummed quietly, voice low, one eye opening ever so slightly, your vision adjusting to the light as you took a quick look at your fiancé’s face. 

‘let me go, fuma.’ you mumbled against his chest, trying to wiggle away from his grip. the man didn’t even budge — holding you in his arms as if letting go wasn’t an option, shaking his head as an answer. ‘seriously. i have a pile of tests to grade and little to no time to–’

‘you need rest, my love.’ he stated, voice firm, lowering himself in front of the couch just slightly to put you down, immediately reaching for the blanket laying on the other side of it. he draped it over you, chuckling slightly at the frown on your face. ‘stay here. we will take care of those tests later.’

‘we?’

his features softened as his head turned towards you, the man already on his way towards the kitchen area. 

‘of course. i won’t leave this burden for you to carry alone.’ he said, lips curving up ever so slightly. ‘have you eaten anything after coming back from work?’ 

your silence was enough of an answer for fuma, enough for him to let out a little sigh of worry. 

he took a quick look inside the fridge and cursed under his breath, eyes scanning the foods left and trying to think of something he could cook up with them, but to no avail. none of the things inside would’ve made any sense together, especially for someone whose cooking skills were far from a michelin star chef. 

fuma came back from the kitchen with a glass of water in hand, immediately handing it to you.

‘your head must hurt. you should drink more.’ he mumbled, settling in next to you with a soft thump, adjusting his position to be possibly most comfortable, possibly most close to your body. much to fuma’s surprise, you drank it all in one go — purposefully avoiding mentioning just how right he was about your headache and the primary reason behind it. ‘i ordered food for us. we’ll get back to your tests once your body gets some fuel in. is that alright, my love?’

‘but–’

‘no buts. you need food and rest to be more efficient with your work.’ 

once again, he was right — you were unsure whether you loved or hated just how attentive to detail he was, especially when it came to you. it was almost as if he knew you better than anyone else, better than you yourself knew your body and mind. 

fuma loosened his tie with his free hand, discarding it somewhere on the couch before opening the first two buttons of his shirt, letting himself get more comfortable. his other hand went to your hair without a second thought — mindlessly playing with the strands, your body reacting almost immediately as it leaned into his touch. 

‘why didn’t you tell me earlier?’ his voice was softer now, less commanding and more so laced with a hint of worry. ‘had i known just how much you had to do earlier, i would’ve helped you immediately.’

‘exactly.’ you mumbled, eyes looking up at his face. ‘i don’t want you to tire yourself out with responsibilities that aren’t yours to bear.’ 

‘your burdens are mine too, my love. we’re in this life together, you know?’ he stated, leaning in closer to press a soft kiss to your lips. ‘i’d rather get a little tired helping you than know you exhausted yourself with too much work and i didn’t lift a finger.’ 

your lips met his again — this time initiated by you — as one of his hands rested against the side of your face, pulling you closer. the kiss was slow, soft and yet sensual in its own way: your body pressed against his perfectly, like a puzzle piece meant to stay in this place forever. fuma hummed into the kiss softly, muscles relaxing under your touch, your mind slowly letting the pleasure of this moment take over and discard the nagging thoughts about the test papers waiting at your desk. this moment wasn’t a test of any sort — only a sweet moment shared between two lovers, a silent confession in a physical form. and yet despite that, you were sure of one thing. 

had it been a test for best partner in the whole world then murata fuma, your beloved fiancé, would score perfect marks each time.
