It’s a roleswap au! So they all have the same powers they do in canon but i switched around their general situations a bit…
For example, Luther has addiction issues like klaus. Diego works with the commission like five. Allison has a quiet life but is shunned by the family like viktor. Klaus is famous like allison. Five is a vigilante (more of a hired assassin and PI) like diego. Ben stays at home working for reginald like Luther. And finally viktor dies at 16 instead of ben, which is what sets off most of the changes in this au.
To go into detail specifically about five, he still diappears at 13 and goes to the apocalypse. He still works for the commission. He still sneaks out and gets sent back to his 13 year old body. But, for various reasons, he goes back earlier than in canon, around when the rest of the group is 20, so, when the events of the show take place in 2019, he’s around 22. He acts similar to how he does in the main show, but he’s more subdued and less focused on the apocalypse since he’s had some time to recover from his time at the commission and in the apocalypse. Also just a little small detail, he had to choose an alias to use on paperwork and stuff because Five Hargreeves is technically 29 years old, missing, and possibly legally dead, and he doesn’t wanna explain everything to the government. So he assumed the identity Damian Artiri, Artiri being his birth mom’s last name (not canon i made that up lol). He still goes by five when he can but for business he’s damian.
And about klaus and viktor: they became very close after vik died, closer even than klaus and ben in canon. Vik successfully encouraged klaus to seek out better career opportunities than doing dangerous things for drug money, and he eventually gained fame and became a succesful and famous model and minor celebrity. He’s not totally sober but he’s better than in the canon timeline. And viktor realized his gender identity much faster (around 18-20 years old) because of klaus’ heavy involvement in the queer community!!
Here’s a little one-shot about them if you’d like!! It’s a little dark so mind the tags and warnings!

Thank you for being interested in my au, it truly means a lot!! I plan to write and draw more for it soon :))))

another thing that makes me feel weird that i dont quite know how to articulate.
im at the point in the finale of s2 where harlan's starting to make it snow. and. i can't help but feel like the way the show is framing viktor going back to help him is so weird, and it's weird in the same way that the audience interpretation of five getting the briefcase is weird.
there's the dialogue around it (viktor: i know that he needs my help[...]for the first time in my life, i don't want to do it alone / diego: look im sorry, but we have other priorities). the context is that they're discussing the commission targeting them + they need to stay together, and viktor, instead of doing this, is going to the farm to help with harlan.
the weird part is that what harlan is doing Is apocalyptic and it Is To Scale with the things that they're discussing before, in fact so much so that the commission was planning to head there before they knew the umbrellas were going there. of course there's no way that viktor could have known specifically that (even though he might have had an inkling of what was going on due to his familiarity with his own powers) but still. the show frames this in almost a...selfish way. (not the negative connotation of selfish [though to be clear i am side-eyeing a little bit of how the show writes this aspect of his character ESPECIALLY in s4]*, more just in that this is something viktor is asking for while not offering anything himself, it's not transactional, it's not a deal or a threat in the way that a lot of interactions up until this point have been). but it's weird to me that even when viktor is bringing them on a rescue mission to a child in need, it's framed as something they're doing For Him and not like. what one would expect (the assertiveness of "you're heroes, this is what we Have to do to make things Right")
more than damaging to just that timeline harlan's whole Situation is shown the next season to actually transcend his immediate surroundings. and in season 3, with the way the time travel panned out, their actions in the 60's do in fact change their present, so even if the commission hadn't targeted harlan, likely he would have changed (or maybe even destroyed) enough things that they couldn't return to Normal 2019. so the counterfactual game is that had the family not gone (or had viktor listened to them and not gone at all) they might have actually jumped forward to An Apocalypse (à l'Harlan).
then that makes you think about various other things in season 1, ostensibly selfish and maybe tone-deaf things that viktor is asking for (concert tickets, forgiveness for the book without Actually Apologizing) but which. may have averted the apocalypse had they happened? we can't be sure but they sure are Framed that way, since he Is the apocalypse.
contrast this to. ok. five. five's end goal being the prevention of apocalypses. possibly The most altruistic goal out there. (yes, that line in s3 diego:"what's more important than family?"/five: "the apocalypse" does drive me crazy let's just chalk it up to s3 dialogue insanity and not think about it for now) in season 2 this manifests in that briefcase scene, which of course builds a lot of tension and is very frustrating in the end when none of the siblings sans like. klaus and luther (and ben) show up. im not necessarily blaming the show for this but i feel like this is often framed as a failure on the siblings' parts to show up. and it kind of is, seeing as the show goes to great lengths to show us that five is giving Everything including Every Waking Moment to get to Preventing The Apocalypse or Getting Everyone Back To The Right Time but the kicker is that the other siblings are put in extrenuous circumstances too, just. less pressing ones. replaying their flaw in s1 of not quite understaning the magnitude of their problem. and the second thing out of his favor is that many people theorize (and i agree) that the briefcase wasn't going to work the way he wanted to either, possibly transporting everyone to a Worse time or location. but since it's destroyed, we never see the consequence of what Could have been the show examining a flaw of five's.
it feels like two sides of the same coin on intent vs outcome. five's "your good intent may have doomed the outcome" vs viktor's "your selfish intent was somehow altruistic." and i think that worked for season 1 when the majority of the characters were early on in their development, mostly busy with their normal lives and hadn't quite caught on to the scope of what they were dealing with, but once you get to Season Three and the show still wants to punish the characters for growing and trying to be good people it started getting harsh and boring.
*um. i also don't like how certain parts of viktor's actions are dressed. and i understand that this isn't a criticism of the show if it Wanted me to dislike those parts so maybe it is in fact a compliment. caring about harlan in s2/3 and ben in s4 actually takes on the five-theme of selfless intent being disproportionately punished in the outcome. somehow, saving harlan and wanting not to murder ben is cosmically disapproved of. for some reason his stupid ass arc in s4 leads to him demanding to learn the truth of ben's death, as if it's something he won't be "left out of" again, like exclusive umbrella academy activities. and not just actually. something he along with Everyone Else has had stolen from them (memories, by Reginald). i don't like that his asking for things from others is (from my point of view) framed as selfish or frivolous when in fact they concern the Apocalypse (which is Him and His State Of Mind), while his flaw when he refuses to do what others ask is not understanding the influence his (apocalyptic) presence has, Doesn't He Get That It's More Complicated Than That?
this objectively would never have happened but imagine the scenario of lila somehow making it out of the barn in s2 (possibly having never learned the truth of her parents' deaths) and the handler also being successful and her going "hey lila!! say hi to your new brother harlan!!!"
some more gold during my s2 rewatch for animatic references. oh The Handler, maybe you were just lying and it's a clever parallel with how you treat lila, but either way it's so funny to hear such a vast overestimation of the communication within the umbrella academy
"lila's too much of a mary sue she's a manic pixie dream girl she's badly written" okay and? not her fault? not her fault shes the second cousin once removed of firestar not her fault her mother stepped on a star before giving birth to her not her fault she was cursed and her curse was goosefeather, chapped cat-moustached-whiskered lips telling her every next step starclan wants her to take every prophecy spanning years before and years ahead not any old daisytail moonstone dream given to the extras that die before the climax no real ass dreams these are real dreams we give so that thunderclan can choke and rot and die on thse maggot-filled rodents courtesy of a punishment years ago that you ever went to riverclan and learned about the inhibitory properties of low temperatures mouse ears become a delicacy love between you and your family becomes a delicacy as your mouth starts to foam and you never cure your deputy's cancer, cancer that has become the stars in your brain, proliferation without purpose, all made to be your fault

One plot hole that annoys me is I don't understand is why are Lilas parents in america?? They've already been established to live in London, and Lila has a British accent for God's sake.
Like sure maybe Diego got them to america as a surprise so Lila can spend more time w her birth parents. Buuuut doesn't explain why they live in the same house and are kinda broke. Her parents are flowerkeepers and yeah that might not bring in great income why are they sitting in the house w nothing to do?? Desi parents are pretty hard to convince to not work because they'd love to help their family.
And while Lila would've loved to live w them, once she realized they're kinda limiting her life she would IMMEDIATELY tell Diego bc the Lila I know would never stay quiet on something. (also it feels kinda racist on how they dealt w her parents being overbearing even tho she could've dropped the kids to anyone and had free time. ok.)
Just removing her parents being in London kinda undermines the "Five killed her parents plot" (which they also didnt expand on).
Plus, in my opinion, Lila keeping her accent was some form in staying connected to them while she was in the Handler's care. Sure accents change over time, but her keeping her accent is a way she honoured them. So having them be American just removes that aspect of her to me.
couldn’t bring these with me intact, adhesives are hard. happened earlier than expected but I did say I would unite them should the collage be destroyed! mother and child back together again.
finally getting around to this now that i'm out of the trenches of finals... sticking a cut in here, but feel free to browse :)

tales from oblivion (M, TBD): work-in-progress and utter self-indulgence. au of the comics, follows a handful of ocs and the white violin in hotel oblivion. here there be toxic relationships and awful religion. heed warnings for self-harm, derealization, alcoholism/substance abuse, and violence.
series
hell home: absolute BEAST of a s4 rewrite au. focuses on an alternate take on the universal reset and the concept of dormancy theory-- the past self from prior realities being hidden within the new self. viktor-centric. very much a work in progress. non-linear format. various warnings for self-harm, violence, abuse, PTSD, religious trauma, intrusive thoughts/derealization, and transphobia.
part i- itch (M, 1.1k words): a teenaged viktor experiences early symptoms of dormancy. a prelude, of sorts.

part iii- perspective (T, 10.5k words): handful of vignettes/musings from viktor's ghosts during his upbringing. more of a character study. still important to unpack some of the unchecked neuroses on display.
part iv- dormancy theory (M, TBD): the big one. the s4 rewrite bit of the s4 rewrite au. follows the consequences of the reset, the keepers, personifications of regret, and what happens when you try to cover reality in a layer of fondant. work-in-progress.
last gasp: post-canon au following claire, gracie, coco, and r.j., who (un)fortunately don't fall too far from the tree. unsure how much of this there will be. warning for canon compliance.
part i- what remains of you (unrated, 1.5k words): gracie tries to be a good cousin. she finds something horrifying, instead. warning for body horror/violence.
part ii- inheritance (T, 5k words): claire is the last to remember what happened to her family. she copes where she can. as the title suggests, she inherits a horrible legacy. warning for body horror again.
