Sloane HART is thirty-three years old. She/her is employed as a waitress at Sullivans.
If asked about her earliest memory of her mother, Sloane would simply say, ‘Barely there.’ Sloane’s mother worked the night shift, and oftentimes wouldn’t come home until well after sunrise. Sometimes, her mother was lucky enough to get a neighbor to look after her while on other nights, she would have to stay home and do it herself. However, that never put a dent in her mother’s plans to have a ‘good time’. She had people over their apartment all the time: her latest beau-of-the-week, girl friends pregaming before clubbing, drug parties. Instability and bad influences were the first real things Sloane had associated with her mother. However, no matter what, Sloane could never find it in herself to hate her mother.
There were days when Sloane got to have her mother all to herself, and things would be great. They would go to the park, out for ice cream, amusement parks, museums, the zoo—any fun place a child could want to go, her mother made sure to bring her. Moments like these always gave Sloane hope of having a normal family relationship with the woman, but like most things in the world, these moments didn’t last forever. Her mother would always revert back to her old ways and make promises to Sloane she would never keep. When Sloane was a teenager, her mother managed to get pregnant again, and while her mother saw the pregnancy as a bother, Sloane saw it as an opportunity to finally have someone who would always be with her.
After her sister was born, Sloane was always more than happy to look after her. She envisioned all the ways she would help teach this new little girl in her life how good life could be when you had someone in your life you could believe in, and that someone would be her. Sloane was very protective and nurturing of her little sister. She would come up with creative ways to entertain her little sister as well as managing to get all of her school work done, and unlike their mother, Sloane always made sure to never make her little sister feel like she was a burden in any way. She loved the little girl unconditionally.
Reaching the end of her senior year, Sloane had managed to get a scholarship for college. She was over the moon for her luck and the opportunity, but those feelings quickly faded as she began to wonder how her leaving would affect her little sister. She already knew firsthand what being raised by her mom looked like, and she refused to let her have the same upbringing. So, she gave up on college, and decided to stay home for her little sister. She was there for every school play, science fair project, play date, school trip—you name it, Sloane always made sure she was there for it. However, the older her little sister became and was more capable of understanding the poor choices their mother made, the more tensions rose between her younger sibling and her mother.
There was almost always an argument erupting between Sloane’s little sister and mother. Countless times mean words were thrown at each other, and would usually result in one of them storming out of their apartment. Sloane always tried to be the peacekeeper in the family, but that didn’t always work out. While her sister would try to keep her anger only towards their mother, their mother would spit the same hatred towards Sloane whenever she got involved. While the girl never tried to take her mother’s words personally, they still stung nonetheless. However, worrying about herself wasn’t what she ever focused on; she would always follow her sister after their fights and make sure she was alright. Sloane would always reassure her that as soon as her sister was eighteen, the two of them would leave together and never look back. Unfortunately, at the age of sixteen, her little sister felt she had had enough, and with nothing more than a note left behind, her sister was gone.
It’s been two years since she left her mother’s place, and she hasn’t looked back since. Her phone still rings on occasion with her mother’s name flashing on the screen, but Sloane never picks it up. She only keeps her same number waiting that one day she’ll see her sister’s name flashing on the caller id screen; she hasn’t seen or spoken to her sister since she left and just tries her best to believe that she’s okay, wherever she is. Sloane moved to Serenity with a friend of hers that she made while traveling the last couple of years. The two of them had hit it off instantly, and have been in each other’s lives ever since. Both of them work as waitresses at a diner in town.
