Birding at Sirpur. After a long spell of incessant and record rains in Indore, the weather cleared a bit on 17th morning, and we went for a lovely walk & birding to the nearby Sirpur Lake. It was a great joy to see both the twin lakes were full to the brim and the trees were all vibrant & lush green with the resident birds chirping joyously. The migratory birds are yet to come. Mr. Sparrow has a Big Catch 🧡🖤🧡 House Sparrow - Male Indore (Madhya Pradesh), India. Clicked on 12th May 2019 with Nikon Coolpix B700. ~~~~~~ House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is quite common in cities & villages of India. At one time it was getting scarce, but now again we have started seeing the bird which has been our common friend right from childhood. It is quite comfortable with humans around. The male House Sparrow has a grey crown, cheeks and underparts, black on the throat, upper breast and between the bill and eyes. The bill in summer is blue-black, and the legs are brown. In winter the plumage is dulled by pale edgings, and the bill is yellowish-brown. The female has no black on head or throat, nor a grey crown; her upperparts are streaked with brown. The House Sparrow is gregarious at all seasons in its nesting colonies, when feeding and in communal roosts. The nesting site is varied; in holes in masonry or rocks, in ivy or creepers on houses, etc. The House Sparrow is quite aggressive in usurping the nesting sites of other birds, often forcibly evicting the previous occupants, and sometimes even building a new nest directly on top of another active nest with live nestlings. Black-winged Stilt ❤️🖤❤️ The Black-winged Stilt - juvenile (Himantopus himantopus). An adult B&W Stilt is a black and white shorebird, perched on very long and fine pink legs, giving the bird an elegant gait. The juvenile however has brownish wings with white outlines instead of black. Underparts are white. It has a white face and forehead, and black top of the crown. Eyes are red. The long & thin bill is black and straight. Legs are extra long and of reddish-pink color - giving them their name of the stilt. It prefers wetlands with open shallow water, and breeds on bare ground near water. Feeds by wading in the water, picking with its bill from the water surface. In flight, long pink legs stick out far beyond the tail. They are seen to aggressively shoo away other stilts entering their areas. Called गजपाँव in Hindi. Purple Beauty with a Red Tika 💜💙❤️ The Grey-headed Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) is a small-chicken-sized bird, with its huge feet, bright plumage and red bill. It is a bluish-purple aquatic bird with a red bill and forehead shield and red legs and feet with long toes. The blues are of various shades. The tail is flicked up often, revealing fluffy white “underpants.” Juveniles are duller than adults and lack the red bill and shield. These Purple Swamphens breed in warm reed beds. The male has an elaborate courtship display, holding water weeds in his bill and bowing to the female with loud chuckles. A common inhabitant of marshy, vegetated freshwater bodies such as swamps, rivers, and lakes; usually in small groups. Feeds, often clumsily, at muddy water edges, in reeds, and on floating vegetation. Makes short nasal grunts and croaking sounds.
