wrote one fic again this year. as expected it was for masq.
Yesterday Once More - Honestly I kind of don't like this fic. I really did want to write a character I normally don't write or really think much about, and I was interested in exploring Zhang Xinjie's unraveling in a situation where he couldn't keep to his routine. However, I don't really like my execution of this. As always my weakness is coming up with scenarios that are interesting and believable!!! Honestly I might have been tempted to delete this if not for wanting to have a record of my masq participation :<
I am trying soooo hard to phase out my zines. I only have straightforward finance responsibilities left! I have one more shipping responsibility left and god willing that will be done by March! I have one smaller effort project and one higher responsibility project left but it's free digital so I'm hoping it will be less stressful and time consuming :( After wrapping up some zines this year I really think some of my mental block for writing lifted, and I'm really hoping this trend continues next year. I miss writing!
I started writing two yohaji fic last year, and I'd really like to post at least one! one is gakutai wingfic and one is douman de-aging shenanigans. I love having delusions. I am struggling with trying to get my specific neuroses about these guys on paper. Writing is hard but I had fun making my way through these drafts, and I really am looking forward to doing more of it. 2026 goal is to finish writing one of these!!!!
I've also been rotating a sylvix fic in my mind: post-canon, post-marriage, gautier & fraldarius are kind of merging territories administratively, but this is a temporary solution until dimitri can get a non-nobility government system stood up. felix and sylvain go on a tour of gautier lands & villages/towns to meet the people because they're soon to be felix's people too. (this is a solution to the What Does A Post-AM Route Do About the Crests and Nobility situation. is it the best solution? I don't think so but I am not good at building political storylines!!!). this fic would combine many of my favorite things: a) sylvix stupidly in love b) sylvix being competent at doing Government Stuff c) travelogue writing d) waxing poetic about nature/the environment (i love when people go on about gautier winters :]) e) interesting OCs that flesh out a world.
I am extremely intimidated though LMFAO some of these fe3h writers Get These Guys so deeply and I don't think I'm at that level!!! Also worried that I'm just pulling stuff I liked from the fics I've read and I don't have a single original thought. AHHHHHH. to be honest this will probably never get written, i don't have much in mind for this except the ~aesthetic~ but it's nice to think about!

Word count total is DEFINITELY off, I had to remove a bunch of fics off my top 5 longest fic list because most of them were fic I either clicked on out of curiosity/another reason and never actually read or intended to read. The fandom spread of my edited list is pretty reflective of this year's reading habits yep. I'm surprised Unthreading is longer than CYB!

Felix beat out Sylvain with 4 works for most read character which is a little funny because I think after this time around I'm more insane about Sylvain as a character.
Nothing surprising here either! I'm suspicious that the most visited author list takes the lifetime view counts of each author's fics, which will definitely skew results since some fics I have reread a lot over the years. Wish there was a way to filter view count for a certain time period but that would be a lot of extra data that wouldn't say much at all.
Definitely interested to see what fandoms I read for in this upcoming year! Will it be another relapse year, we shall see!
Some critical rules for writing coherent genre fiction, courtesy of my writing teacher, who is very wise. I don't pretend to have mastered all of these, but their application can do wonders for a story, their lack can cripple it:
Employ the causal chain - every action must be connected to what comes before and after. Each action and beat needs to have impact. They don't all need to be shown but the author needs to know what they are. It is impossible to build suspense without this principle. Things can't happen "just because" or there's no reason for the audience to become engaged with your sequence of events or do things like make predictions.
All subsequent rules follow from this principle.
When showing a new type of fictional magic or science, you must show it work before you can show it break.
For example, if a character has the ability to summon objects into their hand, we need to see them do so successfully and see how it works, before we see it break at a critical moment during the climax. Otherwise, the audience can't be expected to follow why this situation is unusual because they don't know how it works during normal circumstances.
When claiming a character is good at something, you must show them succeeding at it before you show them failing at it during a moment of pressure. Otherwise, we don't believe you when you establish your character's competence or badassery.
For example, when saying your character is an excellent military commander, we need to see them win a fight using those skills and tactics. We can't open with a fight they lose, or else the character and author lose credibility. By all means, show the experienced hero/military leader/ruler/assassin/mage etc break down during a moment of intense pressure, fall down sobbing in terror at a truly insurmountable foe, or otherwise fail to meet the moment, but don't do this before we've seen them succeed at least once, or the moment loses impact.
During the build-up of tension, coincidences should hurt the hero and help the antagonist. This plays into the causal chain rule. Coincidences that help the hero feel cheap. Coincidences that help the villain raise the tension.
Every beat, whenever possible, should be connected to conscious action by central characters (hero, love interest, or villain). The more events are connected to purposeful action by key characters, the more satisfying the causal chain for the reader.
Avoid things that happen "just because" whenever possible. You can have one or two, sure, but the more often things happen "just because" the less interesting the story is, especially if those "just because" moments are core to the story. Fiction is not real life. Audiences are drawn to stories where purposeful actions dictate the success or failure of the characters.
Did I daydream this, or was there a website for writers with like. A ridiculous quantity of descriptive aid. Like I remember clicking on " inside a cinema " or something like that. Then, BAM. mastery: vague magic au because i dislike complex worldbuildingâ¤ď¸ this was my first time writing madatobi and i was actually a little scared - i've been rotating these guys in my head for a long time and i was worried about my grasp of their characters. still am, but regardless i was very happy to finally write them. this fic is largely vibes only, but i like writing that too!
lessons learned: first M+ fic :D yeah i don't know, i had an awful flash of inspiration and thought that if not now then i'd never write something like it again. i can't say it's good, but it was definitely very fun to write! i think this is the one that did best among the 3 i wrote for mdtb week haha

Good Hunting: this fic was a year and a half in the making!!! i am very proud of it actually. hmm what to even say about this! i think my prose slaps, i'm quite satisfied with the narrative, i had a mini breakdown about a stupid minor detail that waylaid the fic for months, and i wrote the last section, the transformation sequence, really early in the process and i'm still very happy with it!!!!! ahhhh having a fic i still feel this good about is really nice.

venti stormterror's lair fic: it's a fic about venti and his relationship with stormterror's lair! wrote it for the scenes of wonder genshin zine...so technically it's public and posted? i just haven't posted it on ao3 yet...if i do it the next few days i'll link it here :'') . i actually do like this one! wanted to exercise my descriptive writing muscles; i don't know how well i did but it was pretty fun to write
ganyu & liyue fic: in a very similar vein, it's a story about liyue changing through ganyu's eyes :') i'm....not super happy with this one ahahaha </3 which is also a reason it hasn't been posted yet. sigh i don't know how to clean it up though!! so the chances of me dumping it on ao3 is pretty low atm...maybe i'll throw it on tumblr first?? ahhh idk!

added this question this year LOLOLOL i do have some """"active"""" wips!!!! it's mostly genshin!!!!!!!!! i have a ganqing wip i've been chipping away at for a while now that i do quite like :'D then.....two other genshin fic that i'm writing for two different free/open enrollment genshin zines! one is a lumine & albedo & venti fic that's just kind of about how all three of them are sussy non-humans. the other one is....a bit cringe LOL actually i don't even want to talk about it </3 it's supposed be yanfei & yelan with a fables theme but while i have an outline i do not like it very much :(
BTW my most exciting wip is a nahida & kaveh fic that is currently titled "nahida is my baby girl but kaveh is my babygirl. i hope you understand." however i word vomited a couple hundred freewrite words and now i have no idea how i want to keep writing it. pain pain pain.

most fun to write was definitely (no) love left! my recipient had some REALLY banger prompts like dreams/nightmares so i tried to play a bit with that kind of atmosphere/imagery!!! i think it turned out pretty well.

Probably my favorite Tiny Herb & Wang Jiexi-centric fic. Iâm very grateful this gem is available to the English fandom, and Iâm so pleased to have an opportunity to recommend it. This fic spans the pre-canon period from Wang Jiexiâs decision to seal the magician style through Tiny Herbâs championship win, and it really digs into how difficult that journey was for Wang Jiexi. Wang Jiexiâs relationship with Fang Shiqian deserves a shoutout - both funny and heartwarming! - but at its heart this is a character study of Wang Jiexi himself. His personal development through the story ties in beautifully with Tiny Herbâs developing success, and the ending is spot-on perfect.Â

As far as first meetings went, it was not the most auspicious, and she was not a fox so much as a huli jingâa temptress spirit that could take on the form of a human or the shape of a fox at willâcould be called a fox. Mostly, Xiao Shiqin remembers the triumphant smile of his uncle as his blade cut clean through the neck of the older huli jing, and the sickening sound of metal slicing through flesh and bone.

âWei Wuxian!â Jiang Cheng yells back. He walks forward, because when in his life has he ever been afraid of Wei Wuxian?
âAiya, Jiang Cheng. Donât you know how to send a letter? Iâll make you plant radishes until you drop! Is that what the illustrious Jiang-zongzhu wants to do all day?â
I donât want to visit, Jiang Cheng wants to say, I want you to come home, but Wei Wuxian hasnât stopped talking.
âWei Wuxian!â Filled with nameless fury, Jiang Cheng lunges to grab the front of his robes. As Wei Wuxian stumbles, the tendrils of resentful energy at his feet writhe, then burst, swirling around them in a rising storm. Heâs holding Wei Wuxian in his fists on the path to the Burial Mounds, heâs cradling Jiang Yanli in his arms in Nightless City and thereâs so much blood, heâs neither here nor there with only Sandu in his hands staring through the darkness at a cacophony of resentful energy devouring itself with Wei Wuxian at its centerâ
