she  turns  her  face  to  him,  surprise  showing  in  the  slight  opening  of  her  mouth,  the  softening  of  her  eyes .    she  believed  him ;    after  all  they  had  been  through  she  thought  they  could  never  lie  to  eachother  again .   and  why  should  he?  they  had  earned  this  right  together.    but  hearing  it  said  out  loud,  honest  and  raw  in  the  deep  timbers  of  his  voice,  still  made  her  heart  skip,  her  stomach  flutter    ❛❛    matthias  .   you  don’t  need  permission.  I’ll  always,  always  want  you .    ❜❜

          THERE  IS  LITTLE  INTEREST  SHOWN        when  he  approaches    ,    when  he  speaks    &    still  aleksander’s      (  ALWAYS  ALEKSANDER  NOW    ,    HE  STRUGGLES  TO  REFER  TO  HIMSELF  IN  TITLES  OF  THE  PAST    .  )      eyes  follow  the  man  whose  name  he  has  yet  to  learn  like  a  hawk    .    there  is  so  little  entertainment  down  in  this  dungeon    ,    he  will  take  it  even  in  the  form  of  a  drüskelle  if  need  be    .      “  i  am  surprised    ,    really    ,  ”      he  says    ,    smile  spreading    ,    albeit  slowly    .      “  i  didn’t  think  they  allowed  rabid  dogs  among  the  grisha  now    .    have  we  truly  fallen  so  low    ?  ”

        the trial is not over yet. while it may seem they are sailing into calm waters, inej knows better; even if they make it back to ketterdam with no more fighting, they’re not unscathed. more than one of them has been wounded in this fight…and nina worst of all. inej’s heart feels as though one of her knives is stuck into it, twisting—she can hardly imagine what matthias must be feeling, but she doesn’t begrudge him a moment of peace before he returns, ever dutiful.  ❝ i will sit with her, if you like. so you can get some air. ❞

“Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.”  The words are as cold as ice and unblinking eyes stay fixed on the man in the cell. 

“The life I had is gone. There’s no getting it back. I’d rather make a new one. A better one.” His voice sounds low and hesitant, almost as if he’s afraid of the confession. And in a way Matthias is, because saying it out loud makes it that much more real. 

Their hands are entwined as he speaks, giving even more weight for the promise he’s making. “I will never leave you. It will be this, always, for as long as you will let me.”
