He married Sonja LaVern (Reagan) in Tippecanoe County on August 10, 1961. They had three sons: Jeffrey (Izzy) in 1962, Kevin Thomas Isbell in 1965, and Joseph “Joe” Isbell in 1968. They got divorced in 1970.

In 1975 he married Beverly Jack (Toledo, OH) and had two daughters (Sara, born in 1983 and Lesley, born in 1987).

Sonja LaVern (Reagan) Isbell (born in 1940, Lafayette ??)

Occupation: telephone operator

Following the divorce, she moved with Izzy, Kevin and Joe to Lafayette, raising them there. Izzy credits her as the supportive parent: “My mum was 100 per cent supportive – loved music, let Axl [Rose] and I play in our garage… My parents split when I was third grade”.

Elizabeth Adeline Isbell (née Barton, 1916–1990), Izzy’s grandmother

A Lafayette jazz musician, she played drums in the “High Notes Organ Club” swing band. Izzy cites her as a major influence: “My biggest musical influence was my paternal grandmother, who played drums in a swing jazz band with her friends”. Elizabeth died Mar 5, 1990 in Lafayette.
