     laughter tickles  the fringes of his speech as the present is so delicately plucked from his hands. no present opening? on christmas eve? oh, the travesty.

          “  i don’t understand how people don’t die of heatstroke this time of year. they’re bundled up like it’s freezing outside.  “

“Isn’t that like saying that everywhere where you come from has small brains or memory problems?” Or at least that was what she could gather from the elf’s hasty cover up. Perhaps she shouldn’t of spoken in that way, regardless her expression would read she didn’t completely believe him and his words with such a statement. “I’m sure you can do batter than that if you really tr–” What words of encouragement she had to give were quickly cut off by the suggestion of rising prices on her own goods. Something so preposterous came straight from his mouth so easily-

“No!” A rare action where both hands slammed palm down on the table edge, clearly startling the few other inn-goers minding their own business. “That’s a terrible idea! Imagine if you were a young child with hardly any money or something! How would you get medicine for your ill parent without resorting to stealing!?”

     never mind the fact  that she pointed out that he, though in a roundabout manner, suggested his tribe was naught but a gaggle of fools. never mind the fact that he fumbled & failed in hiding the fact that─against all manner of ability he may have for speech─he erred. ( that he, the ever clever & bold, spoke without thinking much like his dear travelling companion ) it breaks the composure of his expression, shock settling ‘cross his features as a light color of embarrassment would dust his cheeks. adonis nearly rises from his seat to protest this, hands now placed flat on the table’s surface───but he stops.

     it is the response  to his suggestion that has his hands slide from the table & fall into his lap. shock melts into a dumbfounded expression, and adonis cannot mask it. 

          “  i... didn’t think of it like that.  “

     and he sounds so... surprised by this revelation.

She seemed to pause for a long moment when he straight out denied it, the look on her face clearly read some form disbelief toward his claims. Rather than call him out on possible improbabilities, she shook her head before giving a sigh.

“You mean you didn’t learn anything from traveling so much?” Even she couldn’t help picking up helpful information as she went along. Be it information about the local area or things she rather didn’t need to know. Still, she had a point. Though when he brought up the thought of actually trying it out her entire pose seemed to stiffen.

“N-No! I don’t have that many spares! You can’t just suddenly decide to try it out when materials are scarce and expensive!”

     if there were  a single string of words which would undoubtedly give the elf chills, perhaps it is those which fall from her mouth so easily. does adonis truly retain as much knowledge as he seemed to boast through his ability to effortlessly knit his sentences together?  ( to bullshit, for lack of a more eloquent term )  when put alongside his friend, it is easy to suggest that he would be the one with more sense. and yet, at the same time & in times like these, it is clear that─for a mercenary who has traveled far & wide─adonis is hardly a  brilliant mind.

          “  ... well, it’s not easy to remember things when you’re learning a lot in a short amount of time. i’m from a very small village, so even with all my travels, it’s a lot to take in at once. i just forget.  “

     is that a lie?  is it the truth? it sounded so casual, even he wasn’t sure which it were. adonis recovers his composure quickly, never minding the unnerved quirk of his lips which would likely give away his total fumble of information.
