This photograph by the great Ruth Orkin captures Ethel Waters, Carson McCullers, and Julie Harris on the opening night of “The Member of the Wedding.” A version of this photograph, torn from a book, was with Tennessee Williams when I met him. Ethel Waters was someone he adored and whose career he followed; Carson was a dear friend with whom he felt safe writing and sharing ideas and hopes; Julie Harris was, quite simply, one of his angels, a women who was “so pure and so driven toward kindness” that he sought her out on black nights when the blues got mean.
