Basically, computers don’t keep track of what minute, hour, day, or whatever else you know as a date and time. Instead, they store a counter of the number of seconds since midnight (UTC) on January 1st, 1970, and that’s a big number. So big that once we go past 03:14:07 (UTC) on 1/19/2038, it’ll get too big for that counter to store. This is called an integer overflow and it’s basically going to freak out and become some big, negative number and set your clock to 1901.
