Rhetorical Ink: My Top 10 Halloween Horror Films!
I will be honest. I am NOT a Horror film fan, so to even watch a horror movie takes something special about it. This list doesn’t cover all of the “horror” genre, but rather horror films centered around the upcoming holiday: Halloween! I’ll do a more “general” Top 10 Horror Film list later on, that’s not just confined to the Halloween Holiday!
I’m sure my list doesn’t cover the “classics” or everyone’s favorites, but…they scare me too much! Sorry Halloween and The Exorcist! With that, here are my Top Ten Five Halloween Horror Films!
A fun, “B-Movie” stylized horror-old-fashioned-comedic-at-times Tim Burton Halloween ride of a movie. Some don’t like this movie because it is campy and over the top, but I mean…Christopher Walken with shark teeth? Johnny Depp as a creeped out goth Sherlock Ichabod Crane? It’s got gore, some creepy imagery, and is a great film to watch with friends on a cold, chilly night.
4. Saw/Saw II (2004 and 2005)
I’ve only seen the first two films; the first one…its ending gets me every time! As for Saw II, there are parts of that movie I simply cannot watch. One example being the “needle” scene (probably because I am afraid of needles), but like the ending of Saw, the twist is so good, especially when you don’t see it coming – it just goes past the gore to make for a suspenseful horror thriller.
This movie terrified me as a kid. Just because of how “real” the idea of someone in a mask coming to your house and killing you was. Now that I watch the show as an adult, I completely see all of the tropes, all of the horror stereotypes that Scary Movie and other movies would parody later on…It’s a 1990′s classic connected to Halloween that if you’ve not seen, you have to watch laugh, and maybe “scream” at (*wink wink*).
2. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Another movie who has come out around Halloween, The Blair Witch Project cemented itself as a game-changer in horror films, giving us movies like Paranormal Activity down the road…it’s not necessarily the “scariest” movie, but the ending still sends chills down my spine, even when I know it’s fake…probably.
1. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
If you’ve not seen this movie, do it this Halloween. Joss Whedon (writer of The Avengers) creates his love letter to horror films with this hilarious, scary, and clever satire of a horror film. I remember this coming out around Halloween and my friends dragging me to see it; I was afraid at first, but so glad I saw it. Plus, you get to see a pre-MCU Chris Hemsworth give a HILARIOUS performance as a stereotypical frat boy. It’s a horror movie that knows it’s a horror movie, and gives a beautiful tribute to it.
