Odysseus: I made that as a symbol of our love! It's carved in a tree, it literally can't be moved!

Penelope: And why would you know? Oh wait, it's cause you're my fucking husband!

Odysseus: I-

Penelope: Like, no shit you've killed people. You went to a war, Odysseus. What do you think happens in wars?! Dance parties?!

Odysseus:

Penelope: War is literally the shortened version of the word manslaughter and trauma! No shit that's what happened!

Odysseus:

Penelope: "cLeVeReSt mAn iN gReEcE" BE CLEVER THEN oh my gods. I didn't wait twenty years just for you to ask me the stupidest question in existence.

Odysseus:

"she doesn't give a twig about what anyone else thinks"

"of course she does, she just pretends not to"

this has probably been said before but I just love how they were both wrong about that.

When Elphaba starts dancing, Fiyero interprets it as this "screw you" to everyone else, a step she takes naturally because she doesn't care. Galinda interprets it as an act, as some show she puts up because she can't handle the vulnerability of being humiliated.

But neither is true.

Elphaba starts dancing by herself as a decision. In that moment, she not allowing herself to care about other's opinion. It doesn't come naturally, as Fiyero implies, but it's not pretend, as Galinda says. It's a deliberate act of courage. Not a performance, but not in her nature. Somewhere in between.

Fiyero and Galinda's assumptions say much more about themselves than Elphaba.

Fiyero thinks she doesn't care, and there's envy in his tone. To him, not caring is the best state possible, he literally just sang a whole song about that. What he sees in that moment is a girl who's not running away, and surely that's because she doesn't care. Because she mastered what he's been trying to do for years.

Galinda thinks she's pretending, because pretending is Galinda's default state. She sees herself in Elphaba in that moment. After all, Elphaba's being ridiculed for the hat that Galinda herself had to pretend to hate. When Elphaba starts dancing, it's obvious, to Galinda, that she was just pretending that the whispering didn't get to her. Because how could it not get to her?

and then.

along comes galinda. who - after spending an entire night attempting to give her a makeover - settles on: ‘actually, you’re perfect just the way you are. i wouldn’t change a thing. except maybe to tuck a little piece of myself in with you, just there.’

and i just think that’s neat.
