So this Sunday, our group will be starting session zero of a superhero tabletop roleplaying game called Masks: A New Generation (long story short, we had to end our DnD game abruptly *sobs*) and decided to draw a portrait of my very own superhero.
Meet Diana Aguilar a.k.a. Blue Iris! Iām using the Beacon archetype for her. :) Iām pretty excited to see how she would develop as a character!
Diana was born to a middle class family and is of Filipino descent. Her father, Peter, is a second-generation Filipino American while her mother, Maya, came to the States from the Philippines after she married Peter. She had a very loving family and was especially close to her mother. Unfortunately, she had been sickly ever since she was young, which only worsened as she grew older. Despite her ailment, she makes up for it with her cheerful personality. She would look up to the superheroes of Halcyon city and would often dream to one day be as strong as they were.
When she was 15, her sickness took a toll on her and she would lay bedridden for several weeks. Her parents would watch over her, and sometimes she would hear them arguing outside her bedroom door. She woke up one day, her body no longer weak of constitution and feeling a strength she had never felt before. This puzzled her but at the same time it made her very happy. However that happiness would be short-lived as she soon found out that her mother had left her and her father, leaving only a single blue iris flower (her mother's favorite flower) by Diana's bedside. When Diana asked her father where her mother went and why she left them, he would only answer her with a hug and a sob.
Diana never bothered asking him again and concluded that it was Diana's fault that she left--that she was a burden and her mother eventually grew tired of nursing a sickly child like her. Instead of letting this event dampen her spirits, she decided she would prove to her mother that she could do amazing things and be like the superheroes she admired so much. So during the next few years, she devoted her newfound strength to training herself using bows and trick arrows, and would dye her hair with blue streaks dedicated to her mother.
Her phasing powers manifested at age 16, when Diana saved the life of a child who was nearly run over by a speeding truck. Without thinking, she ran to the middle of the road and quickly pushed the child out of harmās way, leaving Diana to come face to face with the speeding vehicle. The truck shouldāve killed her but instead of hitting her, it sped through her, like she was some kind of ghost.
The experience left her awestruck, and while it thrilled (and confused) her to know she had powers, it also frustrated her as each time she experimented phasing through anything it would weaken her and she would have to rest to regain her energy. Phasing her whole body (i.e. walking through walls) would weaken her more as compared to phasing certain body parts (like a hand) through a solid object. As a result, Diana would use her phasing ability only when needed.
Always positive and full of hope, she believed that one day, she could become one of those superheroes and once word gets to her mother about all of the amazing feats she's done, maybe--just maybe--her mother would come back and the family would be whole once more.Ā
