Woja’to was still finding his stride. 

It took a lot of getting used to. A lot of practice. A lot of trial and error. In the end it was worth it.

“I’m sorry…” A gentle confession, whispered through the silence of the small ocean overlook. 

Trees rustled in the night breeze, bringing the only answer Woja’to would receive. He’d lost count of the times he had said those words, of the number of times he’d come here since being told. It was still an unreal feeling in the pit of his stomach, to see the pair of grave markers, to know everything it took to put them there, and that his son had faced this loss alone for years.

Ginger:

Oh no. Oooh no no no no. Where was it? Where could it be? Oh no. Oh Menphina have mercy!

“Terria? T-Terria?!” R’aeliah called for her partner, voice cracking with the threat of tears to match the ones already being provided by their son. Atreus wailed, the sound nearly masking Liah’s voice, just the same as the fast footsteps that echoed down the hall in the wake of her beckoning. 

“What? What is it; what’s wrong?” Terria scanned the room, trying to spot a target, an enemy, something in need of smiting for upsetting her family. Instead of a villain she found only Liah holding Atreus, in the middle of the bedroom which looked like a storm had rolled through it. 

“I-I can’t find it. His pacifier. I… I’ve looked everywhere.” Again Liah’s voice hitched, lips quivering in a futile effort to hold back tears. The dam broke soon after, tired, overwhelmed tears springing free. In the time it took for a sob to tumble out of her, she found herself wrapped up in Terria’s arms.

“It’s alright. I’ll help you look.” Pulling from the embrace, Terria gently pulled their son from Liah’s hold, deciding to give the poor Miqo’te a break. Truly, had the little screaming heathen not been sired by her, Terria might have cast him out the nearest window for all the noise. In the meantime, a knuckle as provided for the baby to gnaw on, which seemed to soothe him a little; at least for about twenty seconds. It was enough time for Terria to glance around the room again.

“There is a pacifier on the dresser.” She pointed out, nodding towards the blue faux nipple across the room.

“He doesn’t want that one.” Liah lamented. “H-He wants the gold one. It’s his favorite.” She sniffled, wiping at her face before stepping over to dig around in the crib for the fourth time.

“Oh.” Yeah, that cleared a lot of this up for Terria. Despite the chaos, she couldn’t help but smirk a fraction at her son, a little bit proud of his fickle tastes. Gold was always the best. 

“Let’s check the kitchen and get you some tea, Liah.” The offer was met with a nod, and a small smile from the frazzled Miqo’te. Stressed as she was, things always felt more manageable with Terria around.

A gentle whine. A soft fussing babble. It was all that was needed to draw R’aeliah out of her slumber. Her hands lifted, rubbing at her face while her ears tipped towards the sound, listening intently to make sure she hadn’t simply been hearing things. There it was again, the mild grumblings of Atreus in his crib, the sounds threatening the onslaught of wailing and tears. It didn’t take much for Liah to wiggle her way free of the sheets and off the bed, feet carrying her quickly to the side of her son’s crib. 

“Hush, little one.” She whispered, words weak from the lingering sleepy haze. She collected him from the small plush bed, going through the idle checks to see what it was he wanted. Wasn’t a diaper change, he hadn’t lost his preferred toy, and some gentle rocking and humming didn’t do much to soothe him. When offered food though, he latched quickly and easily. Always seemed to be the case, at least more often than not. He ate so much, she couldn’t quite figure out where this tiny infant was putting it all. She didn’t mind, it meant he was getting stronger, that her son was growing. Sore and tired as she was, it was well worth it.
