In a JSTOR Daily article, Betsy Golden Kellem examines gender play in nineteenth-century theater and how performance became a space for questioning social norms.

As theater reached broader audiences, it took on new cultural weight. Women appeared more frequently in roles associated with male tragic heroes such as Hamlet and Romeo, emerging alongside changing ideas about respectability, class, and who theater was for. Kellem situates this shift within a longer history of gender play onstage while noting how the nineteenth century brought it into more prominent and serious roles. Cross-gender casting moved into the center of theatrical culture and became part of how audiences engaged with questions about identity and representation.

Actors including Adah Isaacs Menken, Charlotte Cushman, and Sarah Bernhardt illustrate how these performances were received. Menken’s work in Mazeppa drew attention that often focused on her physical presence. Cushman’s portrayal of Romeo earned recognition alongside commentary shaped by expectations about women’s ambition. Bernhardt’s Hamlet prompted debate about interpretation and character.

Critical responses varied. Some reviewers described these performances as remarkable, while others interpreted them through existing ideas about gender. Even praise reflected assumptions about which roles a woman could convincingly embody.

7th lord in Ashwini is my favourite so I'm glad this is the first one 😁, we're starting on a good note. Your spouse will have a GREAT body; very athletic and will motivate you to work out as well. As for the negative, they can be very impulsive and stubborn, and if you're someone who likes to live their life on chill mode then..... You're not gonna like them very much.

7th lord in Bharani gives you a spouse who will express androgyny in regards to gender expression. If ashwini is into hugging and cuddling pda then bharani is just straight up giving backshots in an alley pda. The 7th lord must be in good dignity, especially if you're a straight woman. Your spouse can have a breeding kink. They will be a provider, but in a more spending-money-on-you sense, they will love buying stuff for you and will enjoy seeing you in expensive lingerie. Your material comfort will be their priority. They will have very strong values (positive or negative) and WILL leave you if you don't agree with them. Very "my way or the highway" type of a person. Can be kind of vain

7th lord in Krittika is another placement that gives an athletic spouse but unlike Ashwini, they're more "you rest and let ME handle the tough work", won't let you lift a finger and it doesn't matter if you're a man, woman, gay or lesbian, they will have this quality nonetheless. They can be passionate about social causes and will fight for equality and justice even if they don't belong to the group that's facing inequality. Your spouse will be very ambitious and might be the best in their career because of this; they will be respected and admired in their workplace. They will have a classy dressing sense and will give off a rich vibe. Since Krittika is associated with fire, their love language will be cooking and feeding you, will make sure that you eat all three meals and incorporate all nutrients. Now, for the negative, they can be physically aggressive and will have a tendency to cheat as well as this nakshatra is not exactly known for their loyal nature, quite the opposite infact.

7th lord in Rohini can give you a conventionally attractive spouse and they will have many admirers. They may look ethereal and it will definitely be a love at first sight thing for you. They will be very spiritual and will love to meditate, go on retreats and stuff. Your spiritual knowledge will increase through them and this placement can be beneficial if you have ketu in the 7th house. They can be a spendthrift and will be in debt because of this. Without spiritual evolution, they can be highly materialistic and will be almost obsessed with hoarding money or spending it only on themselves. They may be short tempered and can constantly accuse you of having an affair as they very much struggle with jealousy.

7th lord in Mrigashira also gives you an extremely spiritual spouse. In marriage, they'll give more importance to duty and responsibility than romance. They might follow a traditional courtship method, and will love writing poems or short notes for you. They will want to have kids so if you don't want that then there might be fights related to that. They will love talking to you and listening to your voice; giving advice and solving your problems will be their love language. Your spouse will be gentle and sweet with a mellow personality, this along with ashwini is one of my favourite placement. They'll bring emotional stability in your life. They might not be good at expressing their emotions so miscommunication can be a problem so make sure that you take the first step and address the elephant in the room. They will be shy and sensitive, so the sex will be more vanilla (unless your spouse has some likes-kinky-sex placements, then that changes everything).

7th lord in Ardra....I kind of do not like this placement very much, so this gives you a spouse who is very cunning; can have a fox like personality. They can be a little manipulative, but whether it's for the good or bad will depend on many other factors. They can be quite unpredictable and that can cause problems in marriage. They will be very bold and will love to take risks and go on adventures. They won't like the idea of having kids and can be irresponsible when it comes to them. I actually do not have anything good to say about it, I know many people with this placement and they've all had terrible experiences so I'm sorry.

7th lord in Punarvasu can give you a rich spouse or at least someone who has a much higher social standing than you. There will be something unconventional about your relationship; I've seen that people who have this just keep on living together with their partner rather than marrying them and that works for both of them. Your spouse may be involved in philanthropy. They will exhibit many uranian traits and that involves a need for independence which makes them a little commitment phobic, so it's recommended that you guys marry after 30. They'll be very creative and will love to organise parties. They will like to celebrate relationship milestones like, first anniversary, first meeting and all that stuff. They can be overly critical of the stuff and people around them and that's pretty much the only negative thing with this.

7th lord in Pushya shows that you'll have a karmic bond with your spouse so the house in which the 7th lord is in, is super important for the prediction. They'll be religious and will want to follow all the traditions associated with theirs. If you're a straight woman, your husband will expect you to be a housewife. They will appear to be a little closed off in the start but will slowly open up to you. Romance and all might take some time to take off, patience is the key here. They can be quite stubborn and arrogant at times, won't consult you before taking any decision in regards to the relationship and that will piss you off. They will get affected by other people's opinions and I've seen that women who have this, their husbands get pulled in by the misogynistic ideas of manosphere quite easily.

7th lord in Ashlesha gives you the ultimate tsundere. Sexual compatibility will be important to your spouse, they'll have a high libido as well. Your spouse will love talking to you about important topics;"political and economic state of the world". Will love taking you to libraries for a date. They will be introverted and won't like crowded places very much, so expect a lot of picnic and hiking dates. Will be the epitome of "lady in the streets, freak in the sheets" (change it to your preference). Seeing their bdsm dungeon for the very first time WILL freak you out. The negative thing is that they may overthink a lot, will make up scenarios that haven't happened and then get angry at you. They'll have high expectations of married life and will hold a grudge if things don't turn out to be exactly the way they pictured it to be. Ashlesha is great for filing for divorces so....it isn't really good for keeping things "together"

Uranus in the 7th House - Searching for an Original in Imitations

With the winds of Uranus change blowing through the 7th house, relationships are sure to be tangy, thrilling, and cosmic toxic. She could be a serial heartbreaker because they all begin to bore her after a week. Uranus in the 7th relationships can be experimental, full of party, play, spontaneity, competition, and amusement. The individual loves the dress, make up, and personal style of lovers if it showcases the partner’s unique and innovative style, the person can be enthralled by anything that her partner does. 

In astrology, the 7th house is the domain of relationships and attraction. Her relationships must have a constant buzz that keeps the romance fresh, youthful, and inspiring. The individual may be attracted to unusual types, social castaways, brilliant thinkers, and community advocates. She will literally take off at a moment’s notice, but if you manage to catch her little mind butterfly with knowledge and intelligence she will stay in your net by choice. Uranus in the 7th people look for someone ‘different’ in love, a girl who is not like the other girls, a girl who is captivating, clever, and unique. Because the 7th house is the astrological shadow, the condition of the 7th can suggest internal qualities that have been suppressed and lain dormant. These are qualities we unconsciously seek out in our friendships and relationships. The individual may have an instant attraction to the girl she finds interesting, peculiar, and special. But this relationship may frustrate her more than ever as she initiates conflict with the qualities in her partner she has not accepted or processed in herself, she can literally fight with herself and use her partner’s body, mind, and emotion for it. Being with someone special can be challenging. And Uranus in the 7th loves a challenge. Special girls have unique qualities, and no one perceives the exceptional qualities of ‘different’ girls like Uranus in the 7th. However if she wants to conserve the relationship and the experience of finding a rare gem, she must be willing to relinquish the personal sentiments that restrict her from fully committing. Like her fear of clingy relationships, becoming trapped in an unhappy relationship, or her fear of missing out on something better. Uranus in the 7th have a unique eye for spotting colourful, exclusive, and seductive spirits from crowds of people. She can instantly spot your ‘specialness’. 

Relationships can be unusual or unorthodox with Uranus in the 7th. The traditional marriage act is not especially binding to this individual. And getting the government involved in her relationship is like adding another chain to her foot. It doesn’t take much for her to feel overwhelmed or suffocated in love. A repeating challenge can be her ‘on-off’ attraction switch that is automatic when the person grows disinteresting or demanding. Uranus in the 7th people don’t respond well to intrusion and being forced to explain themselves. Relationships must be equal and void of trivial drama, power plays, or dishonesty. You only have to push one of her buttons very slightly to cause a catastrophe and never see or hear from her again. Like she is the sort of person for example who would hear her partner comment something racist or offensive and realise in an instant flash that its over. Her heart closes off that easily, and she has personal warning signs that tell her when to leave and why. Intuition flows remarkably with Uranus in the 7th. Uranus is comfortable in an air house participating in relationships because it’s only the next air sign along that Uranus calls home, ruling a sign that values unity, togetherness, and connecting. When Uranus in the 7th connect with another person, it’s like startling white electric lights begin forming around them and knot them together in star voltage energy, electricity, and infinity. She is the ultimate mirror of wild eccentricities, hard to find and even harder to keep. Romance is like an electric charge, cosmic jolts spin up both spines, kissing popping candy onto each other’s spirit.

I know a lot of people talk about the “ugliness” of 8th house synastry so I’m here to offer some of the lighter things I’ve noticed regarding this. I know several people who are in healthy, strong 8th house synastry relationships. My grandparents were together 50+ years, my grandfather’s Sun/Moon/Venus/Mercury were all in my grandmother’s 8th house.

- Can be profoundly deep and a soul-binding type of love.

- Many couples I know who have been together 20+ years have someone’s Sun and Mercury in the other’s 8th.

- That “I would die for you and kill for you.” type of love.

- Couples with this may sometimes have separation anxiety from each other.

- I’ve noticed there can be a telepathic/unspoken communication between the two.

- The sex can feel like a merging of two souls and like they’re bound together.

- Sometimes it feels like you know each other from somewhere.

- If there is a significant age gap, the older partner will want to deeply nurture the younger one. They might help them heal any deep emotional wounds.

- If both partners have Pluto influences in the natal, this relationship will likely lead to marriage quickly.

- Love exploring the mysterious, odd, and dark parts of life together.

- These relationships, with mature partners, can lead to both individuals becoming the best versions of themselves.

- I’ve found this can cause one of the partners dying of a broken heart if the other passes away. Four couples I know that died hours apart had a lot of 8th House Overlays.

- Couples living together might have dark home interiors. Dark couches, wood or other furniture combined with soft light.

- Unconditional love and understanding for each other. This can feel like a “you’re my lover but my best friend” relationship.

12th house synastry can be viewed as scary. Often we are told bad things about the 12th house in our own charts or synastry. I always like to start off by saying that this is a part of out chart that runs very deep, this is not an area that deals with surface level matters in relationships. As we know the connection differs depending on what planets are going into the 12th house and which sign rules over the persons 12th house.

This is a house where you can avoid each other, or maybe one does. If both people aren’t awake to this 12th house energy and connection it can scare them. They may not fully understand it and this leads them to avoid it. However they will find its not just as easy as ignoring it because once it’s there it won’t go away, they will feel it for a very long time. It may feel as if once they run away it is out of sight out of mind, but it will creep back in once they least expect it. This is a connection where all of a sudden it can just click for someone, they can have an epiphany where they realise how important this other person is to them. This is the type of connection that stays with you, it feels as if it is rooted deep within you and nothing can fully purge these feeling from you. And nothing can dig as deep in comparison.

 There can be this pattern of one or both people feeling as if they aren’t ready in some way, especially when it comes to the vulnerability of this connection. Often it feels as if the planet person has direct contact with the most hidden and sensitive parts of the 12th house person, like they quite literally have a grip on their soul. This can create a a feeling of exposure for the 12th house person, it can make them feel powerless which can cause them to fight this connection between them. The irony is that most of the time the planet persons intentions are pure. They have a care for the 12th house person and often have this desire to help them. ( thought this is not 100% of the time, once again this goes back to the question of how developed is this person?) 

Thus house, in my opinion, holds some of the best yet the worst synastry there is. It’s not easy, however the profound connection that is found here is so beautiful. There are a few factors that will determine if two people with this placement will thrive or die a hard death. If there are more stable placement within their synastry this will help this. Also ,as I am always saying, it is really dependant on the two individuals in this connection. How developed are they? This is the key to their relationship succeeding.

The 12th house in synastry rules over that spiritual kind of connection. It is the key to that mind, body AND spirit type of love or relationship. It can feel as if there is something there that you cant put your finger on. You can’t quite understand or figure out why you feel the way you do for this person because it is unexplainable. This is one where you can show each other things about each other that you weren’t aware of. This can be painful sometimes as it can reveal past wounds. It can also make both people involved more spiritually in tune with themselves and can be a trigger for a lot of growth within the individuals, even if this is painful sometimes.

I have also noticed how this connection between two people has a feel of ‘no matter how far or distant I am I am always with you’. It is as if you have this invisible bond that tethers you together , sometimes for life, even if you aren’t actively in each others lives at certain points. This can be such a pure and potent form of love between two people. If they find themselves at the right place and time in their lives/ development. If both can put away their egos and surrender to the vulnerability they will be rewarded with a connection that can heal and enlighten them.
