brocedes mind games are alive & well even in the modern era because nico praising lewis so effusively can be read both as an expression of genuine regard & as a way of establishing his own comfort in his career relative to lewis' (if winning against someone almost destroyed you, wouldn't it be a comfort to know that they were the best of all time?) while lewis' general avoidance of nico can be read as a personal reaction to the deterioration of their friendship & as a method of continuing to contest w/ nico post-retirement (it's the way he keeps winking at nico; if he doesn't reach out first than nico has to keep chasing him like he used to do on track). there's an attack & defense to it; in a way they're still racing
