OCTOBER 12TH, 1932

it was a hot day in clarksdale, mississippi. probably too hot to be working, but michael and sammy didn’t have a choice.

neither had hit their quota for the day, and as the day got hotter, it felt more and more impossible.

michael hummed a tune, causing sammy to look up. “you a music fan?” sammy pondered at michael, knowing his own love for music was bold being a preacher’s son.

michael nodded, “love music, wha’ ‘bout you?”

“can’t live without it.” sammy hummed his own tune that he’d been working on. “think i’s some gif’ god given me.”

both young men nodded and hummed in unison, before sammy spoke again. “been writin’ ‘bout my pa, and the love f’r music.”

michael tilted his head, “wha’s tha’ like? bein’ the preacher son and goin’ into music?”

“he hates it. thinks i’s sinnin’ ways. i gotta disagree with him, i love the blues.” sammy hummed more, thinking about the guitar sitting under his cot in the shared room with his siblings. the calming of both young men’s humming was cut off by the sound of an engine.

sammy looked up to see his infamous cousins, the smokestack twins. stack sat in the passenger seat smirking at anything he could, while smoke controlled the vehicle. to say sammy was shocked to see them was an understatement, they had been gone from the area for three years, moving up north for business.

“preacher boy!” stack smirked, the excitement of seeing his young cousins growth radiating from his voice. “you still playin’ tha’ guitar?”

“you know i am.” sammy smiled, going to meet his cousins to catch up.

“good, ‘cause i’m gon’ need you to come play it f’r us.” stack gave no elaboration, sammy tilted his head. he was excited at the opportunity to perform, but he’d need the details.

“we opening a juke joint, need entertainin’. you think you can do tha’?” smoke, the clearly more levelheaded twin, asked. he knew sammy’s capabilities, but he didn’t want to pressure the young boy.

“when? i’d love to perform, i’ve been writin’. i could tell y’all all ‘bout it.” sammy rambled, excitement cam through his voice, obviously due to missing his cousins.

“wha’ ‘bout him?” smoke pointed at michael, who looked up to see the interaction. “can he perform?”

sammy looked back at michael, someone he’d know for a while, but barely on a surface level. “well sure he can.” sammy took the guess, knowing they had just bonded over music prior to this conversation.

michael swallowed, “i probably could, wha’ for?”

“our juke joint. we openin’ soon, y’all be ready sunday when we come back to get ya.” stack smiled before looking at smoke, who decided to drive off before getting the boys in deep trouble.

they both finished up their quotas, heading to their respective areas, but filled with an understanding of what was to come for them. ‘be ready sunday’, echoed in michael’s head, but he’d knew what he had to do.. that was be ready sunday, and be ready to perform, something he’d never done before, but always dreamed of doing.
