The Power of Presence
Background
Do you remember the last time you take a photo? Most of the people have take pictures every day and post them online including Snapchat and Instagram. However is there any connection between us and the object?
Diagram
A company held a summer sale event and set up a DJ-booth for the promotion.
During DJ session, pedestrians stopped in front of the booth and took photos and videos. Usually those photos function as an amplifier of the information. On the other hand, when DJ is not performing, people do not stop: it does not serve the purpose. As I saw this situation, I started thinking why this happens and drew the following diagram.
Without DJ, a speaker or music itself is just a piece of machine. On the x-axis, I put âpresenceâ and on the y-axis I put âdegree of empathy,â or âpossibility of sharing.â The relation between them looks like this. The more powerful the presence is, the more likely to be shared. Thatâs the reason why pedestrians did not take photo outside the DJ session.
Well, how can we solve this problem without DJ? Taking balance between human and machine is one way. What I mean is, use a stuffed animal! It is neither machine nor human, but still we can feel some sort of presence in it. Putting a stuffed animal wearing a headphone and sunglasses might make a movement and contribute to the promotion.
