Happy birthday Reigen Arataka!

The thing is, he never needed all that initially. He was content working by himself, doing his own thing, and very adept at being self sufficient. He was confident he could do whatever he wanted by himself until Mob came into his life. And maybe Reigen didn’t realize it right away, or perhaps not at all until the finale of that arc, but he became unhealthily dependent on that kid—and not just for psychic/exorcism stuff.

Mob became his everything—was the one to fill any social/emotional needs. He was a constant in his life, someone to eat with, to talk to—someone to garner attention and receive praise from. Reigen loves being depended on, and he ironically became dependent on that dependence. Which is why it initially terrifies him when he sees Mob growing up and accomplishing things without his help.

Reigen’s thought process is that if Mob doesn’t need to rely on him anymore, he’ll leave—there would be no incentive to stay. I think deep down, Reigen can’t fathom Mob actually liking him genuinely as a person—not because he’s insecure but because he knows he’s, quite frankly, a bit of an asshole. And someone knowing that part of him and choosing to stay is incomprehensible to Reigen.

Basically, I think that if Mob hadn’t walked into Reigen’s life, he would’ve kept on going just fine. Would he be lonely sometimes? Sure. But he’d certainly be just as capable of doing whatever he set his mind to. He could still charm people into talking to him, still work doing whatever peaked his interest.

He was contented being two faced, using people, never being close to anyone. Honestly, it’s likely that Reigen would’ve become a worse/more jaded person over time. It’s only because Mob made him realize how amazing it was to have a genuine connection—to have someone fully and totally trust and rely on him—that he fell apart.

Mob brought color into Reigen’s world before he’d realized it was gray to being with.
