MGM executives initially wanted to put Tarzan in a sequel to the successful Trader Horn (1931) that included footage shot in Africa. Eventually, the agent of Edgar Rice Burroughs suggested Tarzan alone.

Before Johnny Weismuller was chosen for the role of Tarzan in Tarzan the Ape Man (1932), MGM studios considered Clark Gable and George O'Brien, and made screen tests with Joel McCrea, Bruce Cabot, Preston Foster, Randolph Scott, and Buster Crabbe (who soon played Tarzan in an independent production).
