This past weekend I decided to make a curry dish I'd made once before. They recommended naan bread to go with it, naturally, so I decided to make homemade naan as well.
The naan came out beautifully and was super delicious. The recipe I followed was really easy and paired perfectly with cooking the curry as it rose. The various steps are below.
I recommend the recipe I found. I can't wait to make them again.
You will never go back to store bought naan after making this easy naan bread recipe. Just 4 basic ingredients and no special equipment. Del
While all this was happening, I also made my curry. It was a vegan red lentil curry with a nice blend of spices.
I also decided to blend the curry, which made it nice and easy to dip the naan.
I'll certainly be making this again in the future. The combo was just too amazing.
This one-pot Red Lentil Curry is a simple yet gourmet pantry recipe and bonafide fan favorite. Creamy, indulgent, and ready in 45 minutes.
I used to be so afraid of bread making, but these days I just try things and they always come out so great. I'm thankful for awesome recipes online.
May next weekend's cooking adventure be just as delicious.
This weekend was a low spoons weekend, so I reheated a soup from the freezer I made a few months back and paired it with a basic salad and a loaf of bread that is premade and just needs baking for 15.
I call this combo "We have Olive Garden at home."
The soup was a butternut squash and apple soup with lots of delicious flavors.
The salad was a fantastic simple salad made with greens, granny smith apple, chopped pecans, craisins, feta, and an apple cider vinaigrette.
Close up because it's so pretty:
For anyone wanting to make it, here's the recipe I adapted.
Fresh green salad recipe featuring sliced apple, toasted pepitas, dried cranberries and crumbled goat cheese. Apple cider vinaigrette recipe
Some days can be low spoons but when I can still pull off something new and delicious, it feels empowering.
I heard about this earlier but this is phenomenally good news because a lot of these manuscripts hold palestinian intellectual history dating back centuries and my friends who work in the Islamic book history field believed these all to be gone
Today I decided to make some hummus. It was my second time and so worth it. I paired some of it with carrots and had a nice snack.
https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-hummus-from-scratch-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-107560#post-recipe-11614
I liked the simplicity of this recipe. It used most of the chickpea liquid. It was nice just throwing it all in the food processor to make it.
I also topped with paprika but mixed it up to spread it out.
I still want to try making different types of hummus one day.

I made a badass new chili recipe yesterday in the crockpot. Someone on a discord server I'm in posted the recipe and I had to try it.
The chili is a vegan apple chili. Absolutely delicious and full of great nutrients with the variety of things in it. It was super easy to throw everything together to cook for 6 hours.

Definitely check it out if you love chili. I'm excited to explore more recipes from this site.
My friend also reminded me that cornbread exists so I decided to make that for the first time. Growing up, my Grandma would always make sweet cornbread. I don't know why it always intimidated me to make it myself, but I'm glad I did. This sweet cornbread came out amazing and paired perfectly with the chili. It was like I brought my childhood cornbread back, but even more improved since I made it from scratch. Growing up they always used the Jiffy box with added sugar.
https://www.iheartnaptime.net/sweet-corn-bread/#recipe
This recipe worked perfectly. I had to cook it and additional 10 mins to make sure it all got cooked throughout, but it came out so well when done. Had to resist eating it all yesterday so there'd be some with the chili leftovers today.
I can't recommend these recipes enough. It was so satisfying making two new things and they came out so well. The cooking adventure this weekend was a success. Can't wait to see what's next.

Last week I found a delicious new soup recipe that I'll be making again. This is an easy vegan recipe with so much flavor packed in. Get your veggies and spices ready for this one.
https://www.loveandlemons.com/curry-lentil-soup/#wprm-recipe-container-75207
Love and Lemons is one of my favorite sites for new recipes and I was excited to find a new soup last weekend.
This recipe is also nice because it doesn't call for broth, so I got to make it truly vegan. I usually have to use chicken broth in recipes due to a mushroom allergy so I love finding recipes like this.
Maybe next time I'll use my immersion blender and make it a blended soup. That could be fun. I love blended soups.
Now to find stuff to make this weekend or take a break. The self care cooking adventures continue.

Almost forgot to photograph this one because I was so hungry. This was what was left for my lunch the next day. I found this recipe sometime last year and it has been a solid win every time.
If you love salad, then this kale and quinoa salad is a must.
For mine, I do only 1/4 cup of quinoa, only one bell pepper, use maybe a container of the tomatoes (usually a little less), and I chop everything pretty small to make it easy to eat. It turns out beautifully, though.
I was struggling this weekend to drum up the energy to cook, so I fell back on a familiar recipe. I was eager to make it when Sunday rolled around and was super happy to have leftovers for my lunch the next day.
Hopefully, this weekend I'll have the motivation to cook more, but we'll see. Some weeks can be tough and that's okay.
This kale-quinoa salad pops with different textures and flavors. Find out how to make this healthy and delicious salad for your next meal.
alchemizing a new american dream
(a gaylor theory)
did you know a rumor among immigrants in the 1800s was that American streets were paved with gold? whether they meant it literally or it was just a shared expression, the phrase represents this idea that the nation was filled with endless hopes and dreams, opportunities, a chance at a better life. but this dream is one that has also been tied to over-idealizing material wealth.
the original wizard of oz by l. frank baum was published at the end of the Gilded Age, which was an era of hyperinflated artifice and material wealth that helped create the conditions for the great depression. economic catastrophe. the oz book is thought to be an allegory for this, with the yellow brick road representing the gold standard of currency that was used at that time, the original silver shoes representing the populist ideal to bring back a silver standard, and the green of oz representing fiat currency. but ultimately all of these things and oz itself are just artifice, and in the same way, the american dream has always been a false ideal and illusionâone that we are watching shatter and crumble around us in real time.
taylorâs american dreams
taylor has referred to the american dream either by name or allusion frequently. here are some notable examples:
⢠Fresh Out the Slammer:
âNow pretty baby, Iâm running back home to youâŚto the house where you still wait up and that porch light gleams, to the one who says Iâm the girl of his American dreams. And no matter what Iâve done it wouldnât matter anyway, ainât no way Iâm gonna screw up now that I know whatâs at stake hereâŚâ
⢠King of My Heart:
âSalute to me, Iâm your American queen [original lyrics: salute to me like the American Dream] and we rule the kingdom inside my roomâŚKing of my heart, body and soulâŚAnd all at once, youâre all I want, Iâll never let you goâŚ.â
these are her only two songs that directly invoke the phrase âamerican dreamâ (though in KOMH itâs in the original lyrics but it still counts imo) but itâs important to know itâs not THE american dream. in KOMH sheâs comparing herself to her museâs version of the american dream. the same is true in FOTS. the one of his american dreams. FOTS and KOMH represent taylorâs ideal of her authentic american dream, which subverts the concept of the american dream = material wealth. KOMH is about her giving up âfancy stuffâ for true spiritual wealth, and thatâs whatâs sheâs running home to.
⢠Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince:
âNo cameras catch my pageant smileâŚAnd ran for my lifeâŚvoted most likely to run away with you. And I donât want you to go, I donât really wanna fight, cause nobodyâs gonna win, I think you should come homeâŚAnd Iâll never let you go cause I know this is a fight that someday weâre gonna win, just thought you should know.â
⢠Midnight Rain / High Infidelity
âMy town was a wastelandâŚFull of cages, full of fences, pageant queens and big pretenders, but for some, it was paradise. like a postcardâŚpcture perfect, shiny family, holiday, peppermint candyâ
âYour picket fence is sharp as knives, I was dancing around, dancing around itâ
these three songs depict taylorâs struggles with the mainstream/culturally dominant ideal of the american dream and how it feels like a battle, a fight for her life, and ultimately something she decides she has to leave behind. these three songs also are all examples of the dynamic of duality that is present in much of her recent work: brand taylor vs real taylor, miss americana and the heartbreak prince, and they have to come together again for her new american dynasty to begin. MAATHP always sort of sounded like a duet in how she sings it, like the person calling her to come home is the heartbreak prince, and the person who ran for her life and was scared but wonât ever let the other go because she knows one day theyâll win is miss americana. so when miss americana comes home, sheâs coming home to the heartbreak princeâs american dreams. midnight rain is another clear example of her duality bc it has taylor literally singing in two pitches, having jack warp her voice to sound masculine. and high infidelity seems like it addresses two different factions of her fanbase, and the regret caused by her âbending the truthâ too far.
⢠lyrical connections: âiâll never let you goâ in both KOMH and MAATHP and âpageant (queens)â in both MAATHP and high infidelity
⢠The Last Great American Dynasty
this song fully subverts the over-romanticized ideals of the american dream. whatâs more of an american dream than an american dynasty? but rebekah rebukes itâshe doesnât just reject it. she ruins it. she ruins everything, and she has a marvelous time while she does it, being the loudest woman the town has ever seen. obviously in the end, taylor becomes rebekah. she identifies with her gleeful destruction of sacred, repressive institutions, expectations, traditions, and standards.
then along comes the tayvis circus. the comparison makes itself on a daily basis with no effort; i constantly see tweets describing the two of them as âamerican royalty.â the persona that taylor takes on in the context of this stunt represents the epitome of âMiss Americanaâ the idealized american dream. thatâs why so many gaylors were averse to the tayvis spectacle from the startâwe knew the kind of discourse it would encourage, and itâs exactly the kind of discourse you would expect from a narrative that encouraged returning to âcomforting traditional american values.â
but taylor is rebekah. taylor is going to have a marvelous time ruining everything, too. sheâs going to have a marvelous time tearing down their ideal of the last great american dynasty. those are her stakes! and she warned us all, so many times:
after taylor removed TLGAD from the set, she played it exactly twice in the surprise song set. once to announce she is running, leaving behind the traditional image of the american dream that doesnât suit her, and begging her fans to still want her when sheâs not their shining mirrorball anymore;
and once to reclaim her vision for the american dream and declare her choice, to rebuild her american dynasty, and to explain why she had to do what she did. and that she doesnât regret it. it just felt so good (ruining everything).
and the show immediately after the first time she sang TLGAD with Run, she played these:
laying out her vision of what her (well technically his but he is the heartbreak prince who is also taylor so) american dream looks like, of what exactly sheâs running back home to. and itâs⌠gay as fuck. girl, youâre running back home to emily dickinsonâs fuckass stone ivy cottage to be with your lesbian lover and they can call it what they want bc no one knows you like yourself? i know thatâs right.
a few more crazy little details that must be documented:
⢠7/24/24: There's a chain 'round your throat, piece of paper where I wrote, "I'll wait for you". There's a key on the chain, there's a picture in a frame. Take it with you and run, run from the law, darling, let's run, run from it all.
⢠7/27/24 (the next show): âand he keeps the picture of you in his office downtown, and you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars. now, pretty baby, I'm running back home to you, true loveâŚI'm running to the house where you still wait up, and that porch light gleams. // I want to wear his initial on a chain 'round my neck, chain 'round my neck, not because he owns me, but 'cause he really knows me, which is more than they could say, I. I recall late November, holding my breath, slowly I said, "You don't need to save me. But would you run away with me?" Yes. So yeah, it's a fire, it's a goddamn blaze in the dark, and you started it. You started it. So yeah, it's a war, it's the goddamn fight of my life, and you started it.
⢠the first time she played TLGAD was with Run, a song that mentions a key on a chain. the second time she played it was in Ours x TLGAD, and she had one of her famous glitches. she started to play and then stopped and said, âthatâs the wrong key Um, so wish me more luck than that.â
⢠the day after the first time she played TLGAD with Run, she played FOTS x This Love and ivy x CIWYW. before she sang ivy, she hit the note off-key (it sounded super on purpose), then said âwell. sometimes you just donât hit the right note, do you?â
⢠the first âgreat american dynastyâ is the vision of the american dream sheâs running from bc itâs âthe wrong key,â the wrong note. sheâs running back home to her own vision of the american dream, using performance art to physically represent her intentionality in making the different choice this time, in hitting the right note. and this love is ours, so you can call it what you want. itâs not theirs to speculate if itâs wrong đđ and they canât take whatâs ours
for evermore đ¤
