Aloe ferox

Aloe ferox has a large distribution in South Africa, and it comes in a wide range of flower colors, from red to orange to pink to white to yellow. The eastern form of the species, from KwaZulu-Natal Province, tends to have longer leaves and flowers with white-rimmed mouths, as is visible here. The former name for this form was Aloe candelabrum, but most people now treat this as a synonym of Aloe ferox. In addition to having beautiful flowers, this species has many medicinal uses.

Aloe scobinifolia

This is not a common Aloe in cultivation, but it is notable for its toothless leaves and its branching inflorescence with brightly colored flowers. Our plant has red flowers with a yellow mouth, but on some plants the flowers are all-yellow. It comes from Somaliland, which is the northwestern part of Somalia. Though not recognized internationally as a separate country, it is self-governing because the southern part of Somalia has been in a civil war for so long that its government is barely functional. Aloes belong to the family Asphodelaceae.
