Let's Build a Catacomb Dwelling Heroine
Our aesthetic : Gothic fantasy with a touch of clockpunk.
The backgrounds :
Now...I cannot find online pictures of the flooded parts of the Paris catacombs, probably because they are too dark to photograph.
Also inspo taken from the book : "Chronique du Monde Noir, Livre des Monstres", the works of Ădouard Brasey, folklore of France and the British Isles, and from Grec mythology, but also the case of the "Blond skeleton of Saint-Laurent". I just cannot show it here.
Now...For her looks...Since part of her will be inspired by the Blond Skeleton...She'll be ash blond. Also...I want her to look like she's both a part of the catacombs, but rebelling in her way against the darkness.
She would have a pale, translucent complexion and blond hair...She would look more ethereal with no visible waistseem on her garment...But sleeker outfit might be more practical for such an environment. Hum...to choose later.
Catacomb girl...
Well, I recycled her from my prose practice...
She'll live in a fairly cold and wet climate...So coats.
Something like this, but a lot less colorful and woolen, and maybe even a cute little Watteau pleat in the back.
I imagine her work clothes would be quite stained, probably with blood and posthumous fluids. Mathurine would be her make-shift name...But I am not fully happy with it.
A very bony color palette for her clothing...This is work clothes...So it would all be quite stained.
For her Sunday best...I would imagine her looks would be quite cute, doll-like...But perhaps still a little bit ethereal...Maybe ?
I think...Something more cute and frilly...But I am unsure what.
Now...I know I want her to be ash blonde...But for her eyes...I think I'd like her to have a bit of a necromantic vibe, so I could maybe give her hazel eyes to stand out vividly against her pale skin and light hair.

My elves are meant to be seen as "eerily beautiful", with some characters straight up terrifiying, especially the Drow.
The main heroine gets eventually adopted by a family of them, and she finds her prospective adoptive mother terrifiying. Just, imagine being weak and sick, surrounded by a species that is eerily similar to conventionally attractive humans and go deep into the uncanny valley, the one of which has broken your wrist, but he's also the only one treating you as a human being instead of a ticking time bomb, and helps you, quite underaged and isolated, find a family who'll take you. They also practice rituals you do not understand and are very gory, such as ripping out the wings of each youngster as soon as they pop out, and you've seen other members of their species, and know how sensitive those limbs are. The local law requires GM to be perfomed on all parties for the adoption to be formalized. You're perspective adoptive father treats you as a brat when you attempt to refuse, and accuses you of being so hooked on sexual pleasure you're willing to become a museum artifact. Now, the perspective adoptive mother is the one who cooks the corpses of the condmned for food and medicine, and without some of their catiledge and soft tissues, they look near indistinguishable from human remains, and are indistinguishable to the untrained eye exept for the shoulder blade bones.
Do you think this approach of elves is interesting, since they are straight up horror here ? My drows have the look of the classic fantasy elves, but the Drows, while beautiful, are more...horror than "ooh, sexy anime villain".
Elves in folklore were usually in the trickster fae category! So I do enjoy it when people take them back towards those origins or go in a new direction with it.
So...Human or genderswamp AU...I wonder if the vampire OC would be a rather plain-clad vamp with scars all over her body, and she has the dress and mannerism of a prim and proper house-wife, but behind that facade, she's a huge human anatomy nerd, has a collection of human specimens, loves gardening and is also likes makes corpse medicines.
Which OC are you referring to...?
Mine

history meme : 08/â men  | Les S A N S O N , executioners from father to son
Although being a vital part of the social order, executioners were pariahs who seemed in some ways a world apart. At church they were given their own pew ; at the bakery, they had a specific bread apart from others ; executioners married into other executionersâ families⊠This was the reality of the Sanson dynasty for almost two centuries. It began when, in 1675, Charles Sanson married the daughter of an executioner in Normandy, and thus started working alongside his father-in-law. Moving to Paris, Charles was officialy tasked with his first âsoloâ execution in 1688 and became the official executioner of the french capital, starting a job that will remain in his family for generations. Upon his death in 1695, the patriarch passed the office to his son, also named Charles II (1681â1726). Then, the third Sanson to follow was Charles Jean-Baptiste Sanson (1719â1778) and served all his life as High Executioner. His eldest son, Charles-Henri âknown as âThe Great Sansonââ sworn into the office in 1778. Charles-Henri Sanson became the most prolific executioner of the family: firstly Royal Executionner of France for the King, he became High executioner of the Revolution. Contributing to the design of the notorious guillotine, he executed over 3000 convicted people. Charles-Henriâ son, Henri, succeeded his father in 1795, for 35 years. After his death, his son Henri-ClĂ©ment followed, and was the sixth and last in the dynasty of executioners, serving until 1847. The long list of people executed by the Sanson includes: Robespierre, Danton, the bandit Cartouche, Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, the fourth Bonapartist sergeants, Lavoisier, or Charlotte Corday.
So...We do have a description of Sanson's home...
Because of this, I can't stop imagining him sipping either linden or rowan tea. Oh...And he might have had birch or hazel leaf tea (waste not want not).
Oh, I am way too in love with the clumsy gentleman executioner with an unusual talent to flee torches and pitchforks.
"I educated my two sons on the art of fleeing crowds, a much necessary skill, I daresay. The process was quite unpleasant, but as a father, I just...couldn't not do it in good consience. Do you believe such skills should be democratized ? Having individuals largely immune to the threats of the lantern might be difficult to govern."
I will tell you only this, citizen.
The important thing is to ensure justice for all, when the crowds will not have the need to act so violently. Then no one will have to flee from them.
The task of good government, then, is to ensure that the authorities are not corrupt. It must carefully select its officials and see to it that those who wrong the people cannot escape just punishment through wealth or influence.
For the people will endure all kinds of hardships, but obvious injustice always arouses anger in their pure hearts.

YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME TUMBLR
So annoying. So GD annoying.
The World Health Organization report I highly recommend because there are so many conclusions that are shocking and yet completely obvious.
For example, being exposed to corporal punishment as a kid makes it more likely for a person to commit domestic violence against a partner. In places where corporal punishment is normal, people are more likely to think that rape and intimate partner violence are normal. Kids who are spanked are more likely to be violent with and to bully other kids.
Spanking is literally teaching a kid that violence is okay and normal and it affects the whole society.
It also talks about how corporal punishment affects the brain in its development. It changes the structure of the brain and slows the development of mental abilities. Kids who get spanked have much stronger hormonal responses to stress.
Also, people who I personally know who were spanked as kids have garbage immune systems/are very accident prone.
OC-ask continuation..What would get Ayato to bond with a 10-14 year old who's essentially the school's punching bag over frustration from corporal punishment ? Isn't Ayato status obsessed ? Like, I get Yui, who is sweet enough to bond with the trashlords, and Azusa is rather kind and can relate to being bullied ? Kou I would also get. Laito I struggle, and for Ayato I don't get it.
I wonder the same for Laito, who is someone who believes love is lust.
All right sorry for the late reply but let's do this Also I apologize if I get anything wrong or anything has changed last time I checked your OC was a boy
Ayato:
The way I see him bonding with the kid is at first finding the kids behavior pathetic but deciding he might as well take the kid under his wing so ultimately the kid is no longer a punching bag because he's got a redheaded psycho protecting him although I do see ayato being somewhat abusive because I highly doubt platonic or romantic no relationship with a vampire will be healthy especially given his jealousy so in a platonic way he hates the idea of the kid being with anybody else are bonding with anybody else The only one he won't go after and terrorize for being close with a kid would be yui and kianna
Azusa:
Would find the kid cute and finds it confusing when the child doesn't enjoy the abuse so instead of letting the kid endure it he decides to take it himself because more pleasure for him and with him being so odd when the kids try to bully the boy Azusa just steps in and asks them to bully him instead which creeps them out and ends up with them running away Which ultimately ends up protecting the kid
Laito:
Going to be honest with you He likely sees himself in the kid quite a bit might even wonder why they're so strange at least in his mind and since this is quite the victim becomes the abuser Laito probably teaches the kid that if he wants to feel love He has to get into a relationships specifically romantic and if that's not the case then platonic love just won't feel their heart up and that one day He's going to be afraid to be alone
Charles and Jean de Chartois...
Why did Jean turn on Charles.
So...Jean de Chartois is frankly in an isolated and miserable situation. His own "father" violated him and not happy to do it himself, he whores him out to whoever's he wants to ingratiate himself. The earl is a despicable person.
Suddenly, Jean meets someone to whom he can tell his pain. A peer who treats him well.
A few days later, he's arrested for high treason. He's tortured and then learns the executioner is his former best friend. Of course he is bitter...
Now, Shinichi Sakamoto said in an interview for the French translation of it that there is a side of teenage rebellion to their relationship against homophobic prejudices. The visual metaphor for them is a moth to flame.
Now...What does Jean de Chartois know of the executioner community. Now, he probably knows of Jean-Baptiste due to his "father's" weird Saint-Jean tradition of having the executioner demonstrate skills. Also, most victims of emm...recreational tortures probably go to him, and there's a possibility that Jean went to the Sanson house for medical reasons. He probably didn't know Charles-Henri and Jean-Baptiste are father and son before that festival of 1753, since Charles-Henri was either in boarding school or refusing to go to social events either because of fear, grieving Father Grisel, or Jean-Baptiste had his bout of non-abusive parenting and forbidden his then 13 year old son to expose himself to angry crowds for giggles. Also, Jean-Baptiste is only 34 in the first volume and the average age of mariage for men at this time was 25 to 30, so it would be logical for Jean to assume he doesn't have a teenage son, while Claude has a more baby face and was mistaken for younger.
Jean de Chartois probably sees Jean-Baptiste as a potentially dangerous man for whom his abuse is an economic opportunity...And he wouldn't be wrong.
The other delightful member of the "communauté d'infamie" Jean de Chartois likely meets, that is not Charles, is Soubise...Since Jean was legally tortured. Soubise is a sadistic maniac.
Seeing the fact Jean seems to have intact knees during decapitation and is capable of grabbing things but with reduced coordination, it's likely the method used was water-cure, which would involve quite invasive checks prior to make sure the victims survive it.
This method causes hydraulic intoxication, a symptom of which is confusion, drowsiness and in some, lowered inhibitions. So, him turning against Charles could be a symptom of hydraulic intoxication, the pain of it probably worsened by salt and vinegar to prevent hyponatremia which would dull pain perception. Given how traumatized he is, Jean probably is under some kind of irrational belief that Charles is the cause of this...Something he probably wouldn't believe if his rational thoughts weren't overwhelmed with non-consensual water intoxication mixed in with a lot of anger at being violated. Should Jean be allowed to live long enough after this torture, I don't think he would have lashed out like this once his mind is clear again, although the feeling of betrayal...
When he learns Charles would be his executioner, Jean is too devastated to even lash out. He knows that in his last moments on Earth, he is alone, without a single ally.
Poor Jean.

14 Year Old Charles is Pro-Social Cutie
Alimentation, forge-monde, Dark Fantasy

The powers that decided colonialism were cruel even to their own people. According to most family historians, French nobility had a higher child mortality than the peasantry, but also marginals of similar (wealthy) economic strata. Hum...We know it's not purely natural, since otherwise it would also affect the children of rich merchants from despised religious minorities.
Heck, the Victorians invented painful chastity belts to use on their own kids. The clients paying for Kellogg's circumcisions and clitorectomies (without anesthesia) were all wealthy. Heck, chinese foot binding had originated in upper classes, and FGM is theorized to have originated within the late Egyptian pheroes. (Which makes Cleopatra's motivations likely political rather than sexual.)
So, historically, a lot of torture methods and devices and services were made for the children of the elite. They weren't frustration, but calculated.
Since these elites had mistreated horrifically their own children, they also pushed that aggression outward.
interesting! do you have resources on that?
i can't say i'm surprised. oppressive classes' (like the nobility) goal when it comes to education is about enforcing rigid social norms and preparing their children to espouse a role of violence and domination over those they exploit. so of course providing a violent upbringing and teaching them violence and torture are normal to some extent will lead these traumatized children to grow into adults who think perpetuating violence is normal
Dworkin has a bit in Pornography about young boys beaten or abused by their fathers to "teach them" what the patriarchy is like and prepare them to become patriarchs too
So, my main sources for this are " Histoire de la France urbaine, vol 3" edited by George Duby, the "Dictionaire généalogique des familles de bourreaux" (wealthy executioner families had low child mortality rates), as well as the works of Lloyd de Mause. All of it was compared with the book :"Of Kith and Kin". I also remember the book "Gyn-Ecology" or/and "Pure Lust". Also, "History of Corporal Punishment" is an interesting one. I also looked at material culture, and...A lot of working class families could not have done it, not out of kindness, but because a lot of those abusive practices were cost-prohibitive.
There are more I found with random articles and sourced video essays on the history of circumcision, and had some fun on Gallica, but I cannot remember more.
About Character Intelligence
Smart does not mean well writen, but the characters should be dumb in ways that are believable.
Ben from American Horror Story is an exemple of catching this idiot ball. For some reason, this successful psychologist and family man decides to :
-By a mansion for sales, and yet doesn't find it suspicious. Like...Logically, you would think that such a house sold for unusually cheap would make you think that it's either has toxic mold, is not structurally sound or is from a dangerous neighbourhood, or it's in fact a scam and nobody has the intention of selling it. You know, basic logical suspicions. The train of events that lead to this decision makes it even worst, since it's following his wife's miscarriage. You know, because this woman would not benefit at all from neighbourhood and friendship support groups.
-Doesn't get suspicious when his mistress he saw die start talking to him about carriying through with an abortion. Like...Dude, there are two possibilities : ghosts or you are having hallucinations. He also somewhat believes his mistress when she tells him (after he saw her getting burried) that she had an abortion. Like...Hum...Maybe I don't know, call the clinic she planned on going to, and if that fail, just take a few days off, sleep a bit and see if the presence continue ?
-After moving into this mansion, doesn't do any renovations or precautions to avoid people with personality disorders that could lead to violent tendencies have contact with his family. Or frankly, renovations just to check for structural issues, since he got such a nice home for unusually cheap.
-Fails to discipline his daughter and allow her to develop a nicotine addiction at 14.
As a family man, Ben who is also a successful psychologist, Ben doesn't seem able to apply basic common sense to his responsabilities as father and husband.
Now, other works have dumb characters, but they are still likable.
Quasimodo and Esmeralda from the books are far from intelligent characters, and yet, they are beloved by readers for their profound human qualities. It also helps that they are young and still learning. Harry from Harry Potter is about as intelligent as a particularly dumb sack of rocks, but...He's still a beloved character by the fandom, because he is the main hero, but also because he is funny and heroic.
