VASILISA TRIES TO KEEP A TENDER expression. everyone is at a loss & confused. โ it's understandable, โ she assuages. โ this is not home to most of us. โ even she is beginning to miss the court of dawn at this point. she nods grimly. โ you are not alone in that. โ she nibbles at her bottom lip. โ are you finding it difficult to conjure? โ even she is hardly able to heal half the things she could normally. she takes a deep breath. โ have you ever encountered this before? โ she wishes she had answers rather than questions, but she is just as lost as everyone else.
๐ก๐ข๐ฃ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐ข ๐ด๐๐ฐ ๐ฐ๐ฌ๐ช๐ข๐ฑ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ซ๐ค ๐ฅ๐ข ๐ฅ๐๐ก ๐๐ข๐ข๐ซ ๐ฑ๐๐ฒ๐ค๐ฅ๐ฑ when serving so long in winter's army and under the higher ranking illyrian warriors, just a young whelp in their training yards. it wasn't a difficult thing for him to express if he meant it. it took nothing from him to show his high regard for another, if it was so earned. the same was true of the opposite. bending the knee to someone with low character or questionable virtue โ he would rather welcome a thousand blades into his spine.
vyros bows his head and begins to trek toward the pavilion. he had been there earlier this morning, and it was already overflowing. he worries now that there are injured citizens with no shelter, their wounds spoiling in the sun. a breath is released as his mind circles around the dark possibilities like carrion bird around the fallen. โ some of the injuries i've witnessed have been grave. when the infrastructure began to crumble, places thought sanctuaries had suddenly become minefields. โ
their walk is uphill, so he doesn't rush the march. he keeps the high priestess in his peripheral while scanning for more injured, for places he might be of use. โ may i ask where you were when this all began? what your thoughts are on how it's unraveling? โ vyros steals a glance at her; she seems to live in a different realm, attached to purpose, but not to those that operate around her. he imagines that those with power such as hers, those who receive such constant attention and high praise, must feel like a cold and distant moon hovering around a warm and teeming planet, ever-watchful, but tethered by a gilded string.
he imagines a bird without wings.
as his thoughts veer, he nearly misses the shadow in the alley. but his mind is not quite so tired. he moves closer to the priestess, his thumb clicking kingkiller from its sheath. โ we are being followed. โ
AN UNINTENTIONAL GASP SLIPS from her lips as he explains. vasilisa is always glad she can be of help but it pains her that it often comes at the cost of another person's welfare. โ i hadn't even thought of things collapsing. โ it's a statement directed at no one. she's reminding herself that her shock & awe were nothing in the face of some others. she's safe. uninjured. alive. she's even begun to think about the potential mortality of some. her throat is thick. she's seen war, but it's unspeakable to think something beyond fae had done this.
she's barely able to recognize that vyros has continued speaking. after shaking her head, she manages a response. โ i uh... i don't know. โ everything is beginning to jumble in her brain as she contemplates it all. โ i was just... โ asleep? no, resting. โ i was in my chambers. i left as soon as i felt something. โ rather, it was everything that shook. she can still feel it, her body trembling against her will. โ i must ask mother... โ her voice trails off as she senses him close in to her.
โ what? โ she practically squeaks. she is accustomed to pain and suffering, but there are few in prythian that would disrespect someone of vasilisa's station. to say she has stayed away from any real danger would be an understatement. โ followed? by who? โ it must be some kind of mistake as she only has pure intentions. sure there is no one who would wish to prevent someone from tending to wounded. she can't imagine it. โ do we hide? or perhaps we can just speak with them? โ

head canons and/or backstory.
Lilithea was born as a second child from a second marriage. Great expectations were placed on tiny shoulders. Her father was once an emissary for the court of dawn but he wanted more. After his first wife passed, leaving him with only his son, he decided he needed a new wife. As soon as lilithea was born her father decided she would be betrothed to the young lord Rhys. However that plan wouldnโt last long
Lilithea grew up hearing nothing except what a disappointment the failed engagement was. She wasnโt even an adult before she knew that she was worthless to her father if she couldnโt be used to better himself. The entire affair seemed to fall as her fault in his eyes and he never forgave her.
She was clever and intelligent and well manner but it never mattered, eventually she started putting all that to good use. She would get her own position in a court and then show her father.
That was when she met someone who proposed she looks for ideas outside just one court and slowly, together, they built up Factus Information Guild. Both their identities were kept secret and they grew until it was a well known guild.
Even though she's moved out and taken her mother's name, her father refuses to have a 'worthless' member of the family. Now her father is set on marrying her off again but sheโs convinced she can get out of this engagement herself.

โ that i have your interest is of greater importance than my name, but i will be transparent. i am meric arorjia, and i am here on behalf of the court i serve. โ while he doesn't reveal his title or court, he knows that he's offered up enough information that anyone worth their salt can do a bit of digging and find the truth of his identity. the point is not to conceal himself, but to test her discretion, her ability to talk to and deal with wraiths like him without blanching.
โ i am in no rush, but i can see the suspense is not comforting to you, โ he remarks with a dry humor. he is quiet, watching across the table as the wench pours their whiskey at the tableside. at meric's wordless request, she leaves the bottle before departing. before partaking, he reaches to unsheathe one of his twin blades โ and he is slow and careful in the motion, the way one might be when undressing their lover for the first time โ and his eyes never leave seren nist's. he lays the blade on the table between them so that she might review her handiwork, so that it might trigger her memory.
โ i desire an exclusive contract with you, โ he begins, knowing that this proposal will likely be struck down outright, but also understanding that you must start with the highest number and whittle your way down to a reasonable compromise. โ your blacksmithing is the best prythian has seen in an age, and i will see you handsomely accommodated if you pledge to solely outfit and maintain the steel carried by the greatest players in my court. โ
IT WAS EASY ENOUGH FOR SOMEONE with all the information to decide who & what were important. seren liked to decided these things for themself. โ how unfortunate for you my interest comes at the price of your name then, meric arorjia. โ the name tasted fresh on her mouth. she'd perhaps heard it, but it didn't stick like something she'd said many times before. her eyes lingered on the barmaid, waiting to see how the two interacted. it didn't seemed suspicious or planned, but she hadn't ruled out the idea completely. caution was for the clever, trust for the naive.
she pulled a small pin from under her sleeve and while meric busied himself with his weapon, she dropped the bottom of it into her cup, holding it discreetlyโnever removing her gaze from his until the blade was on the table. it was tantalizing as it was threatening. the last time she'd felt this sort of sensation was likely during her blood rite before her world had been flipped. she lifted the cup to hide the pin once more and get a better look. she saw no reaction in the metal. it was somewhat disappointing she didn't have a reason to grab the blade and turn it on him. she took a slip and retracted the pin, returning it to her sleeve after she replaced the cup on the table. her attention shifted to the blade. it was beginning to feel like he'd actually come here for her work and nothing nefarious. it was almost flattering.
her hands lifted from the cup and knowingly took to the blade. she turned it over once. twice. it was her work. he hadn't lied. she returned it to the table just in time to laugh. โ a handsome reward does nothing for me when exclusivity precludes me from protecting what is mine. besides, why should i furnish your court when it may very well be filled with my enemies? โ she stood abruptly, despite the pull in her to stay. โ i'll thank you for the drink, but unless you give me all of the relevant information, i'll assume you intend to engage in some kind of subterfuge that would do me no good partaking in. โ she hadn't even finished her drink yet but she could see where this conversation was headed. one person from another court she could take in. an entire court? there was treason on the line.

โ๏พ*ยท๏พONCE HE GOT his confidence where he wanted, kieran would saunter over there and make his move, but right now, he just couldn't. trying to pick up a girl in the midst of all of this drama wasn't exactly the smartest thing to do. there were other more important things. "i'll figure it out. i just need to clear my head." kieran took a deep breath, trying to focus his energy on anything else. "i just need answers to all of this. it'll keep bugging me and it's likely i won't be sleeping much until then."
SEREN NODDED, SHEDDING SOME of the unreasonable tension. perhaps the shift to mundane conversation helped. she never was very good at small talk so it took most of her energy not just nod and grunt occasionally. โ i think we all do, โ she admitted grimly. โ if this goes on, it won't just be my patience that runs out, โ she mumbled. she felt the pause in their conversation and forced herself to clear her throat. โ what... uh, what court do you reside in? โ she truly was a terrible choice for conversation.

LILITHEA WAS AWAKE LATE, pacing the halls of an unfamiliar court palace. it wasn't unheard of, but it'd been awhile. she was thinking of returning to her lodgings when she heard someone else. all she heard were steps at first. she moved deftly to a wall and pressed herself flat. as well as she could, she held her breath and listened. even if it was nothing, she couldn't help but want to tuck away and listen. after a few moments of silence, she peered around the corner.
OPHELIA IMMEDIATELY SUCKED A breath in through her teeth. โ not sure that's going to work super well for me. โ that wasn't entirely true. ophelia spent a lot of time on her own and enjoyed it. but when around people, she wanted to indulge that fact. besides that, she just enjoyed company now and then. โ what about very absurdist and nonsensical thoughts? would that also be allowed or have we dismissed them as well? โ she rounded the tree and tipped her head to the side. โ or is silence the real goal? โ
OPHELIA HAD TAKEN TO THE less populated areas all through her stay in the capital. it seemed, however, that the desire to stick close together was waning and her hideaways were becoming more known. she held up her palms, conceding immediately. โ no problem. i didn't mean to startle you. โ she shrugged. โ bad habit of sneaking up on people. โ it was probably all the time spent prowling forests. โ do you mind the company? โ she wasn't all that eager to leave somewhere she'd just arrived, but she understood needing solitude.

cassandra was a herbalist and botanist, a very kind and gentle soul. she saw the pain and intensity in artem grey and wanted to heal that if she could. however, soon she lost him to war ( or so she believed ) but she was already carrying his child. she met a kind lesser fae who'd lost his wife and offered to take her child in as his own upon hearing her story.
cassandra decided to hide the truth from her lovely daughter and raised her as if she was a half fae/high fae, believing the man her mother had married to be her father.
ophelia spent most of her time in woods and fields with her mother. she picked up hunting abilities from her father and made a living helping her mother find herbs and making medicines
ophelia believes that if they'd never gone to gaea her mother would've never told her the truth. however, being in the capital made her mother nervous the truth would come out after seeing her real father alive

WHILE MAVEN WAS STILL ABLE to enjoy most liberties he'd enjoyed before his post in the spring inner circle, he was all to aware his cousin did not share that same experience. it was why he was glad he could bring revelry & debauchery back into his life. maven waved him off. โ bah, what is good anyway? โ he chuckled at the retort. โ even that shall come to an end shortly... summer is at our heels as quickly as ever and we shall soon once again be at a complete loss for our home. โ his voice grew remarkably solemn. it wasn't often maven let anything of serious note slip into his voice, further proof of his need for a respite. he shook his head. โ have you heard of anything new? โ he said, shifting the conversation slightly. โ any plans or preparations the capital will be putting in place? stars forbid, they try and inflict a curfew. โ
hera observes mavenโs movements with a glint of displeasure simmering beneath brownโhues. voice is soft, in contrast to the undertones of sarcasm that spill from the tip of the tongue fluently. โ very thoughtful. though i doubt the plan would work out in your favor. โ truth be told, she is half paying attention, and half not โ attention residing where the chalice sits between his fingers; the โฆ fourth? fifth? sixth? cup of today? lady of the autumn court furrows brows, glancing once to the outside before she snaps a sharp gaze back onto the emissary, lips tilting in a frown. โ nothing that comes in second best to the suggestion of you being careful with your drink, actually. โ
SHE'S NOT THE FIRST FAE NOR will she be the last to tell him to mind his drink. maven waves her off, chuckling to himself. โ dear lady, if i were to be sober now no would benefit a thing. i might as well enjoy myself while staying out of the way. โ it was probably the most truthful thing he could admit. โ everyone is so quick to snap at me, but what value are they providing in these moments. โ he tipped his glass up and looked at her over the rim. โ after all, you're here with me. unless your intention is to forge an irresponsible dalliance with the emissary of the spring court, i do feel you're not doing much of anything either. โ he isn't being cruel, or at least not intentionally so. maven just thinks that most of the people who grumble about him are the most egregious offenders themselves.
โ ๐ฆ k๐ซ๐ข๐ด ๐ถ๐ฌ๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ก๐ซ'๐ฑ ๐๐ข ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฐ; only a fae who's never been held accountable a day in his life for the consequences of his words or his actions would ever suggest such a thing. jokes about bloodshed are easy to make when you've never once looked death in the eye. โ the aggression is misdirected, rhyger knows, but he's pent up, reeling, at the point of frustration, and he's grateful for the target practice. letting off some steam will be good for him in the long-run. things have only just begun to unravel. โ it's bullshit that is getting to me. only those with no substance would waste so much energy in trying to hide it. โ he gestures to the opulence around them, and then his cobalt blue eyes narrow on the fresh-faced young fae. โ don't turn your own words on me as if you are not responsible for speaking them, especially if you're not 'one for violence'. โ
MAVEN HAD CERTAINLY LOOKED death in the eye, only he hadn't gone out looking for it. he felt the slight of the rough & tumble fae but it only slid off his back. perhaps the alcohol helped ease this process. either way, maven couldn't help but bark a laugh. โ i spoke merely in repetition & mockery. โ he rolled his eyes. โ and substance can only pertain to knowing how to wield a blade or pummel a fellow fae? if i'm sick of the ramblings of fools professing 'this court is to blame' or 'that court is' and 'we could strike them down', then forgive my errant sarcasm. i only use words for weapons, though i fear you lack that ability and instead turn to violence yourself. a charming trait, no doubt. โ he lazily raised himself from his seat. โ besides, if you had anything of value to add, you wouldn't be talking to me. so let us set this... โ he gestured between, โ dull interaction cease. โ
โ๏พ*ยท๏พNOW THAT THE chaos had subsided, ellie felt safe-ish, walking away from all of the people. she'd promised that wherever she went, there would be people around, just in case something crazy happened. wandering away, finding a seat to breathe and relax for a moment. but she wasn't alone, and she wasn't expecting the response she'd heard. a small laugh slipped through her lips. ellie read about equinoxes and actually loved the science behind that. giggling even more, she looked up at him. "oh, i'd say, very successful," she stated, trying not to giggle too much. but the more he spoke, the more interested she was. "i mean, i'm really good at making a fuss and complaining," ellie responded, awkwardly playing with one of her curls. looking up at the sky, she sighed. "i actully don't, but i do think there's a lot we don't know, and a lot more we could know, you know? i want them to let me leave and go to the library. i bet i could figure out a whole lot."
MAVEN PEERED OVER AT ELLIE, an eyebrow quirking at her response. โ you don't think the scholars are already on that? i think they've probably fled immediately to their texts and started studying. โ maven snorted. โ battle or read, both options sound equally horrendous. โ he had nothing against scholars and their tomes, it simply wasn't for him. he would rather use his silver tongue to seduce or bemuse. he was rarely the man to call for serious situations, which unfortunately, they seemed to find themselves in. โ did you enjoy yourself? erโbefore the winged thing, i mean. did you enjoy the equinox celebration? โ
Mateo couldn't stop the smirk that fell upon his lips at her words. The two of them had found a certain rhythm when needed to pique each other's interest, even if they were just being a distraction to one another. "I know your love of a book is quite fun to you, but I assure you what I am proposing is much better." He said leaning his head closer to the door. "You have never complained before about this particular brand of fun." He paused for a moment. "And I bring drinks." He said as he clinked the glasses together for her to hear. He stepped back slightly so she would hopefully open the door. "Besides, if you like swords can be part of the game." He added a small laugh falling from his lips.
SHE KNEW IT WAS A FACADE TO act like she wasn't going to let him in, but teasing mateo in private was too fun a pastime to give up. โ and what if you particular brand of fun has become dull? โ she asked as she leaned a little closer to him as well. she smiled as he laughed. โ i shall have to pass on the swords for now, but i'd welcome the drinks. โ she opened the door for him and closed it behind him after he'd entered. normally she would've searched the hall for prying eyes before letting him in but she was too distracted. perhaps she did need to relieve a little stress. โ was your own company not satisfaction enough tonight, sir pellemeur? i fear it is usually myself seeking you out. โ she was fairly certain she was more involved in their affair than he, but she couldn't bring herself to say that.

Mateo decided it was time to find some other company around. He needed a break from the other generals and the courts to clear his mind. The constant search for the answer on how to get out of the current predicament they were in was taxing on him. He knew exactly what or who he needed. Mateo was not one to return to the same bed more than once usually, but Diana was different. It wasn't anything emotional, at least not that Mateo could identify, but the two of them had an understanding over the years. One that he needed to call in at the moment. He grabbed a bottle and two glasses from the study before heading to the room he knew she was occupying. He knocked on the ornate wooden door. "Diana, I know you are in there. I can hear you reading in there. I come with fun." He said with a knowing smirk on his face.
DIANA HAD NEVER BEEN ONE to rely on her powers. learning and networking had always favoured her more. but it was hard to watch the people around her struggle. and, despite her best efforts, the texts weren't working. the knock came to her door and it was nothing. she could continue to cycle between wallowing and reading and whoever it was would leave. she flipped a paged but she wasn't reading anymore she was listening. and despite herself, at the sound of mateo's voice she was moving to the door against her better judgement. it was always against her better judgement. โ and what fun might that be? โ she asked coyly as she leaned against the door, not yet letting him enter. โ and reading is quite fun, i'll have you know. not everything is swords and fists. โ
๐ฅ๐ข ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฉ๐๐ต๐ข๐ฐ ๐ฆ๐ซ๐ฑ๐ฌ ๐ฑ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฏ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ฑ๐๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ฌ๐ซ, his chin still lifted, his belly still pressed against their steel. it is a sign he's won some time. while meric isn't one to allow anyone the upper-hand for long, he can tell by the gleam in their eyes that there is interest manifesting there, a spark of something unwritten. the former pirate doesn't allow himself to feel smug โ if he was as tactless as that, he would have been gutted long before this encounter โ but he does hedge his bets by reaching forward slowly and placing an errant lock of their dark hair back in its place behind their ear. they are beautiful and dangerous, and the action cannot be helped.
โ i'm a former client, โ he offers, eyes falling to the chair offered him. โ you may not remember me, true, as i sent someone in my stead. but you would remember the steel i commissioned if you would permit me to show you. โ he takes a step back from the blade, the pressure gone from his underbelly, and he lowers his hands to his sides. the threat isn't gone, of course, but meric is enjoying this more than he'd like to admit.
finally, he does make his way to the chair opposite hers, and makes a wordless gesture implying he'd like her to sit as well. โ join me, then. i will compensate you for your time whether we come to an agreement or not. โ meric's attention shifts from her, but only long enough to catch the wary gaze of the wench who seems displeased by the ruckus in her barroom. the woman nods somewhat reluctantly and begins to prepare them drinks. โ business done without spirits will never prosper. โ
WHEN HE MOVED HER HAIR BEHIND her ear, seren felt a leap inside herโof what she wasnโt entirely sure? shock? excitement? bloodlust? it was all rather hard to define but it certain made her chest tighten in a way. at the very least she was impressed by his audacity. she scoffed at him, shaking her head as she sat. her dagger rested accessibly in her lap. โ a client whose name iโm not privy to just yet. perhaps... let us say you have my interest. โ he was right, she would recognize her own work and it would verify his storry. potentially. it had every possibility of backfiring on him if he lied. seren loved to let people fall into traps of their own making.
to some, the offer of compensation would be enough for them to sit and listen. at this time, the half Illyrian had little interest in currency. they wanted safety for those they cared about. however, a free drink would put her mind at ease, especially once she put it on a little bit of silver. so she stayed. โ that is perhaps the first thing we agree upon. โ while in the capital, seren had enjoyed coming to this tavern and causing havoc would be the quickest way to ensure she couldnโt return. not wanting that, she left the dagger on her lap as she leaned forward on the table.
โ go on then, to the business. โ she felt she was eerily close to repeating herself for a third time. โ and if youโre not quick about it, iโll ask you to at least walk while you talk so that when you finish we might be in a better location for me to return my blade to your flesh. โ despite the vague threats she uttered, seren was intrigued. who in their right mind found a mystery and had no interest in solving it. but she knew better than to divulge that to an unknown.
