Headcanon

Bastion is smart, they were created to adapt and learn through stressful combat situations using teamwork and overwhelming odds despite while many newer models of Omnics after the war had more advanced personality cores Bastion advanced through self contemplation in the woods; possibly beyond what many would have considered for it’s model (especially after the mass discontinuation of Bastion units after the war leading to them being mostly a mystery.)

While alone they learned to communicate with Ganymede, even respond by mimicry and careful observation. I think this has hindered their relationship to civilization (Alongside humanities intense fear linked to the Bastion unit) as a lot of Bastions speech is more fluctuating and changes from word to word if it is not a proper noun. Making the already difficult communication somewhat impossible. They also gained a stubborn personality, disregarding orders or commands from others even to what might be its own detriment and wanting to experience life at its own pace, resenting others when given orders. Bastion turned its back on their initial coding long ago and does not enjoy following any orders unless it makes sense and is something they would choose themselves. A lot of this can be overlooked as it’s wonder and complete awe of the natural world has left them very joyous.
