I'm a hobbyist ttrpg designer and technically a webnovel author.

I spend most of my time either designing ttrpgs, playing them, or arguing about their design on the internet for internet points.

I promise I want to branch out I just really like the stupid dungeon game but like... I'm enlightened about it trust. Dungeoncrawling is my kink.

My Projects

I'm "writing" Paradoxes of Offence, a baroque fantasy story (next chapter tomorrow trust).

I am also working on Dungeoncrashers: Adventures in a Dying World (funny tagline pending). It's a modern dungeoncrawler but like... good and not bad.

the replacement of websites with apps sounds so backwards when you actually describe it. like hmm you have to download an entire program onto your device each time you want access to a portal, where it takes up storage indefinitely. somebody should invent an app where you can "browse" any portal just by typing in its address... 🥴

So apparently Richard Garriott (a.k.a Lord British) recently said he's going to try to reclaim the rights to the Ultima IP from Electronic Arts using section 203 of the 1976 copyright act?

I doubt he's going to make anything *good* with it The guy is probably one of the most important devs in the history of vidya gaems and every kind of RPG videogame from JRPGs to western CRPGs to modern action RPGs can trace at least part of its design lineage back to things he established with Ultima, but let's be real he hasn't put out a worthwile game in over 30 years.

But on principle I think it's still preferrable for the original creator to have the IP and make a bad game with it than for EA to keep sitting on it indefinitely.

I doubt he gets it back, but I hope he does.

It actually seems there's a pretty good chance he'll be able to get it back without even having to fight them in court!

I looked up section 203 of the 1976 copyright act, and it apparently grants the original author of an IP the inalienable right to unilaterally terminate any copyright transfers or licensing agreements after 35 years, just by submitting a formal letter of termination. EA bought the Ultima IP in 1992, so that 35-year period would end in 2027. So as long as he submits that letter next year declaring he wants to terminate his transfer of the Ultima intellectual property to EA, it seems like there's not much that EA can do to keep it, legally speaking. Of course you never know, they might try to pull a weird loophole or something, but I'm optimistic about this part.

Now if the last two mainline Ultimas and the attempted "spiritual sucessor" MMO he made in 2018 are any indication, I very much doubt he'll make anything good out of it, but it's his world and his characters, so I think the original creator making bad games out of them is still a far superior outcome to a company holding them hostage from their creator indefinitely.
