The Tent Dwellers of Lea Valley
I had just spent the past few hours wandering around the Lea Valley hunting for reflections in the canals and rivers. Wanting to follow the river home, I came to a dead-end. Well, the well kept paths had disappeared anyway. So, I kept going along an overgrown path.
After a few minutes of stomping stinging nettles and brambles, I stumbled across a very deliberate hole in the fence. My intrigue spiked. A few metres from the hole I spotted a tent.Â
"It must be a fisherman", I thought.Â
I couldn't see a rod though and nobody was around, so I carried on. Then I stumbled across another tent. This one looked lived-in.Â
"Wild people!", I thought.Â
Moving further along the path, I came across a few more tents. I still couldn't see or hear a soul but people had definitely been there quite recently. At this point I was split centrally by both feelings of fear and intrigue. The latter was still my driving force, so I carried on.Â
I came to what looked like the end of the path and the location of the most equipped den in the camp.Â
"Must be the boss", I thought.Â
Then, "FUCK!". To my left was a fucking scream mask. I didn't give a shit if they'd bought it for a party. This was not the place or time for such culturally terrifying objects to be forced into my mind. I put my camera over my shoulder and scarpered! I really didn't fancy a chat anymore.Â
Ten minutes later, when I got onto the usual path on the other side of the river, I noticed a man in the very same place I'd spotted the mask talking on his phone (you can see him in the centre of the last image).Â
This man wheels himself down to the towpath in Mile End, opens his slick briefcase, gets comfortable and then blasts out epic Italian Operas for all in the vicinity of 100metres to enjoy. If you complain about the noise he will pass you a pill, which may or may not be a paracetamol.Â
