slow progress is still progress
Miss New York Nia Imani Franklin Has Won the Miss America Pageant
A classical vocalist whose pageant platform is “advocating for the arts,” Franklin sang an operatic selection from the opera La Boheme.
She won a $50,000 scholarship along with the crown in the first Miss America pageant to be held without a swimsuit competition.
Serena Williams has put up with years of harassment and abuse and still remains one of, if not the best, greatest female tennis player in the world. She is drug tested more than any other tennis player. She has to cope with not only sexism but also racism. Her body, her face, her skin colour and her playing style are all constantly criticised. She has fought heart disease and multiple health scares, and competed in the US Open Finals just a year after giving birth, and almost dying from it. She is an activist, a strong advocate of the rights of women and PoC. She lives, breathes and bleeds confidence and power. She deserves better.
Naomi is an inspirational and amazing tennis player. She fought against her idol today, and fought with elegance and determination. She shouldn’t have been booed for winning. She is the first japanese woman to ever win a grand slam. She’s 20. She’s black. She’s amazing and her first (but definitely not last) Grand Slam win shouldn’t be steeped in the controversy of a white male judge disrespecting her opponent. She shouldn’t have been made to feel like she had to apologise for winning. Naomi deserves better.
Naomi absolutely deserved to win, and probably would’ve anyway, but the umpire unfairly penalised Serena for standing up for herself when accused of cheating, asking for an apology and being upset when she wasn’t given one. The umpire robbed both amazing women of their right to play a full, challenging final. Serena and Naomi deserve better.

A 20th century revue, as performed by Ivy Pepper. The intended horizontal format is here. It’s got some flow that way. Reformatting for tumblr turned out to be a bit awkward. If anyone’s interested, I’ll add some notes to this post about the dances, art styles and fashions depicted here. (The 60s are doubled up because they changed so much from one end to the other and I couldn’t decide what to focus on.) —————————— Lackadaisy is on Patreon - there’s extra stuff!
